Hempfield Area 31 Franklin Regional 14 - WATCH
Jack Kopas and Aidan Stinebiser each scored twice, leading Hempfield Area to a 31-14 victory at Franklin Regional. Stinebiser rushed 18 times for 103 yards, while Kopas hauled in two passes for 30 yards and a score, and he added another TD on an interception return in the fourth quarter. Spartans (2-0) quarterback Dom Detruf posted another impressive stat line, hitting 10-of-18 passes for 201 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, while he added 68 yards on the ground. After the Panthers (0-2) fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Jet Taylor helped pull FR even, rushing 20 times for 153 yards and a TD. The Spartans regained the lead on a 40-yard field goal by Sawyer Leuthold in the third quarter, though, and sealed the win with a pair of scores in the final stanza.
Norwin 42 Kiski Area 7 - WATCH
Five different players scored as Norwin posted a lopsided home win, 42-7, against Kiski Area. The Knights (1-1) outgained the Cavaliers 426-120 in total yardage, spearheaded by QB Tristyn Tavares, who threw for 149 yards and a score and added 49 yards and a TD on the ground. Giovanni Rothrauff registered 120 yards and two scores rushing, while Potter Brozeski, Josh Lenart, and Dylan Grives also reached the end zone for the Knights. Lucas Vacanti scored the only points for the Cavaliers (1-1) on a 6-yard pass from Landyn Artman in the final frame, as Artman hit on 10-of-19 passing attempts for 101 yards in his season debut.
Freeport Area 49 Derry Area 6 - WATCH
Freeport Area’s duo of Amos Glenn and Drew Ross overwhelmed Derry Area, as the host Yellowjackets cruised to a 49-6 victory. Ross threw for 120 yards, rushed for 68 yards and a score, and returned an interception 80 yards for another TD for Freeport (2-0). Glenn notched three scores, amassing 122 total yards. Max Doherty accounted for the lone score for the Trojans (1-1), a 17-yard run in the second quarter.
Jeannette 35 Apollo-Ridge 22 - LISTEN
Jeannette scored 35 unanswered points, keyed by Kymon’e Brown, in a 35-22 road victory against Apollo-Ridge at Owens Field. Brown compiled 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air for the Jayhawks (1-1), while Jayce Powell caught six passes for 80 yards and a score and he also found paydirt on his lone carry. Alexander Clawson amassed 254 yards passing and accounted for a pair of TDs for the Vikings (1-1).
Penn-Trafford 26 Mount Lebanon 18
Nick Ponko registered a pair of touchdown receptions, as Penn-Trafford edged homestanding Mount Lebanon 26-18. Ponko caught eight passes spanning 151 yards for the Warriors (2-0), while QB Nate Desmond amassed 222 yards through the air. Blue Devils (0-2) QB Pat Smith rushed for three scores in the setback.
Greater Latrobe 42 Plum 35 (3 OT)
A defensive stop in the third overtime proved the difference, as host Greater Latrobe edged Plum 42-35 in a thriller. AJ Yeboah rushed for 98 yards and scored touchdowns in each of the three OT periods for the Wildcats (1-1), while QB Dom Scarton went 12-of-20 for 140 yards and two TDs. In the defeat, Mustangs signalcaller John Nonnenberg went 17-of-29 for 165 yards and three scores. Plum (1-1) missed a short field goal in the final minutes, resulting in overtime.
Aliquippa 42 Belle Vernon Area 7
Belle Vernon Area was overmatched in a 42-7 home loss against Aliquippa in the season opener for both teams. Marques Council paced the Quips (1-0), completing 12-of-15 throws for 281 yards and three scores, and he added another TD on the ground. The Leopards (0-1) scored their lone points on an 87-yard kickoff return by Chace Petrosky.
Greensburg Central Catholic 40 Mount Pleasant 7
Samir Crosby and Bobby Smithnosky enjoyed stellar nights, as Greensburg Central Catholic blasted Mount Pleasant Area 40-7. Crosby caught six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 102 yards and another score for the visiting Centurions (1-1). Moreover, Smithnosky went 13-of-21 passing for 215 yards and three scores for GCC, also connecting with Luke Semelka for a TD. Semelka added another score on the ground. Brady Brooks, who rushed for 58 yards, had the only points for the Vikings (1-1), who were without top running back Stephen Predajna due to injury.
Greensburg Salem 14 Ligonier Valley 12
Greensburg Salem scored twice in the opening quarter, and the defense made it stand, as the Golden Lions edged host Ligonier Valley 14-12 at Weller Field. Brody Chismar tossed two scores, completing 13-of-23 attempts for 173 yards. His TDs went to Jackson Stevey on a 33-yard strike, and Max Topper on a 29-yard completion for GS (1-1). Greyson Daugherty notched both scores for the Rams (0-2), catching passes for Anthony Petalino and Levi Foust.
Southmoreland 49 East Allegheny 7
Dawson Wolfe threw for four touchdowns, as Southmoreland dominated host East Allegheny 49-7. Wolfe threw for 116 yards in addition to the quartet of scores, two of which went to Makel Darnell, who also added an interception return TD for the Scotties (2-0).
Yough 42 Charleroi 7
John Gergely scored three times as Yough exploded offensively in a 42-7 triumph against Charleroi in the battle of the Cougars. Gergely rushed 18 times for 140 yards for Yough (2-0), while Aidan Shaffer hit 5-of-7 passes for 73 yards and two scores, and he also rushed 10 times for 63 yards and another score. Ryan Sarver caught five passes for 73 yards and a pair of scores for Yough.
Shady Side Academy 56 Burrell 26
Burrell had no answer for Shady Side Academy quarterback Javon Johnston, who propelled the Bulldogs to a convincing 56-26 victory against the Buccaneers. Johnston passed for 357 yards and four TDs, while he added four more scores with his legs for SSA (2-0). Antonio Perkins rushed 20 times for 154 yards and scored all four TDs for the Bucs (0-2), but he lost three fumbles.
Monessen 34 West Greene 18
Tavian Taylor scored three different ways (interception return, rush, reception) in propelling Monessen (2-0) to a 34-18 victory at West Greene.
