Norwin 33 Hempfield Area 26 - WATCH BROADCAST
With Jake Knight and Giovanni Rothrauff leading the way, Norwin scored 19 unanswered points to edge Hempfield Area 33-26 in a Class 6A showdown. Rothrauff rushed 24 times for 193 yards and two TDs for the Knights (5-2, 2-1), while Knight caught a 26-yard touchdown and snagged a pair of second-half interceptions. In the defeat, Dom Detruf went 21-of-35 passing for 325 yards, with three TDs and three picks for the Spartans (4-3, 1-3). In the process, Detruf surpassed Justin Sliwoski to become the Spartans’ career passing yardage and passing TDs leader. Jack Kopas had a monster performance with a dozen catches for 146 yards and a score, while Henry Mutschler posted six grabs for 145 yards and a touchdown.
Penn-Trafford 33 Gateway 23 - WATCH BROADCAST
Overcoming a 23-7 halftime deficit, Penn-Trafford notched a 33-23 home win against Gateway in Class 5A Big East Conference action. Ben Grabowski rushed for 148 yards and two TDs for the Warriors (6-1, 2-1), while Nico Casciato notched an 89-yard kickoff return score. Jack Miller also booted a 36-yard field goal for PT, while Travis Moorhead capped the scoring by recovering a fumble in the end zone for a TD. Shawn Moorefield Jr had a stellar showing for the Gators (2-5, 2-2), as he caught 13 passes for 176 yards and a pair of TDs.
Elizabeth Forward 56 Derry Area 7 - WATCH BROADCAST
Derry Area was overwhelmed early in a 56-7 loss at Elizabeth Forward in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Ryan Messina tossed three TD passes and ran for another for the Warriors (6-1, 2-0), who led 42-0 at the half. Anthony Sacco’s 1-yard run accounted for the lone score for the Trojans (3-4, 0-2).
Jeannette 37 Greensburg Central Catholic 22 - WATCH BROADCAST
With Kymon’e Brown serving as catalyst, homestanding Jeannette knocked off Greensburg Central Catholic 37-22 in a Class 1A Eastern Conference battle. Brown compiled 146 yards and two scores on the ground, and he passed for 138 yards and two more touchdowns through the air for the Jayhawks (4-3, 2-2). Jayce Powell snagged three receptions for 72 yards for Jeannette. In the loss, Samir Crosby posted a prolific outing for the Centurions (3-4, 1-3), as he rushed for 211 yards and a TD, and shifted to QB in the second half and threw for 137 yards and another touchdown. Bobby Smithnosky, who moved from quarterback to receiver, caught four passes for 96 yards and a TD and also found paydirt on a touchdown run.
Franklin Regional 21 Fox Chapel Area 10 - LISTEN BROADCAST
With Jake Pucka taking over at quarterback, Franklin Regional notched its first win, a 21-10 home triumph against Fox Chapel Area in a Class 5A nonconference affair. Pucka threw for 148 yards and a score, sparking the Panthers (1-6) to overcome a 10-0 halftime deficit. Harran Zureikat kicked a 57-yard field goal, establishing a new WPIAL record, for the Foxes (2-5).
Kiski Area 34 Greater Latrobe 13
In his return from injury, Landyn Artman enjoyed a breakthrough performance to lead Kiski Area to a 34-13 home win against Greater Latrobe in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Artman went 12-of-20 passing for 273 yards and five touchdowns for the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-2). Teegan Shirley was on the receiving end of two of those scoring connections, while Andrew Finney, Aven Shirley, and Collin Peterson also had touchdown receptions. In the defeat for the Wildcats (2-5, 1-3), Chris Cochran had a 10-yard TD run, and Ty Wisniewski hooked up with Aaron Gaskey on a 19-yard score.
Chartiers Valley 36 Belle Vernon Area 35
Chartiers Valley scored a touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion in the closing seconds to hand Belle Vernon Area a heartbreaking 36-35 loss in the Class 4A Big Six Conference. Colts QB Luke Miranda connected with Owen Weagraff on a 12-yard score, and Miranda found Tayshaun Lewis on the conversion to give host Chartiers Valley (6-1, 2-0) the win. Chace Petrosky had a massive performance for the Leopards (1-5, 0-2), as he rushed for 339 yards and four touchdowns.
Southmoreland 41 Yough 0
With head coach Dustin Shoaf making his return to alma mater, Southmoreland rolled to a 41-0 victory at Yough in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Jackson Mickens rushed four times for 101 yards and two scores for the Scotties (7-0, 2-0), while QB Dawson Wolfe went 4-of-11 for 103 yards, with one score and one interception. Averyon Darnell and Cam Lee added rushing scores for Southmoreland, which is one of just eight remaining undefeated teams in the WPIAL. The Cougars (2-5, 0-2) have been shut out three times during their five-game skid.
Mount Pleasant Area 42 Greensburg Salem 29
Mount Pleasant Area overcame an early deficit, besting Greensburg Salem 42-29 in a Class 3A Interstate Conference showdown. Stephen Predajna compiled 20 carries for 141 yards and a score for the Vikings (5-2, 2-0), while quarterback Dane Firmstone rushed for 92 yards and a score and added a passing touchdown. Brady Brooks snagged a 55-yard TD reception and also contributed a 63-yard touchdown run. After missing last week, Brody Chismar returned for the Golden Lions (2-5, 0-2) and hit on 13-of-23 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, adding two rushing scores. Max Topper caught four passes for 95 yards and a TD for Greensburg Salem.
Burrell 41 Valley 21
Antonio Perkins had an epic performance to lead Burrell to a 41-21 triumph against Valley in the Battle of the Bypass in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. Perkins compiled 303 yards rushing and four scores on the ground for the Buccaneers (3-4, 2-1). Trey Coury added 159 yards and a pair of TDs for Burrell. In the defeat for the Vikings (0-7, 0-3), Brendon Knuckles tossed a pair of scores to Sean Wilkerson.
Chartiers-Houston 37 Monessen 18
Aaron Walsh factored into five touchdowns to lead Chartiers-Houston, as Monessen suffered a 37-18 home loss to the Buccaneers in the Class 1 Black Hills Conference. Rodney Johnson had a pair of touchdowns for the Greyhounds (4-3, 1-2).
Ligonier Valley 67 Charleroi 13
Ligonier Valley snapped its winless streak in emphatic fashion, as the Rams (1-6) pummeled Charleroi 67-13 in a Class 2A nonconference clash.
