By the end of this weekend, every team in the WPIAL will have played at least one conference game, including six teams from Westmoreland County that are commencing the conference ledger. Additionally, this serves as the unofficial halfway mark of the regular season. Here’s a look at each and every game involving a Westmoreland squad in Week Five.

Canon-McMillan (3-2, 1-0) at Hempfield Area (3-2, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Big Macs: Canon-McMillan knocked off Mount Lebanon 21-6 in Class 6A play last week. For the host Big Macs, Ty Jansma threw for 176 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-13 attempts, while TJ Sabatucci caught four passes for 103 yards. On the season, Jansma has completed 55-of-111 throws for 910 yards, with eight TDs and two interceptions. Ethan Campoli is the top receiver, snagging 21 receptions for 405 yards and a team-high six touchdowns, while Mason Calgaro paces the run game with 221 yards. After a pair of lopsided losses to begin the year, the Big Macs have won three straight, all at home. With Mike Evans taking a one-year sabbatical, Brian DeLallo, the former Bethel Park head coach, is serving as the interim leader for Canon-Mac.

About the Spartans: Hempfield Area was overwhelmed on the road against Pittsburgh Central Catholic last Friday, as the Vikings rolled to a 59-7 win at West Mifflin Area High School in Class 6A play. Central Catholic outpaced the Spartans by a margin of 249 to -9 in rushing yards. In the loss for the Spartans, Jack Kopas caught six passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Dom Detruf went 14-of-18 for 137 yards, with one score and one interception. On the year, Detruf has hit on 62-of-86 passes for 912 yards, with 10 touchdowns and six picks, and he’s added 165 yards rushing. Kopas leads the Spartans with 20 grabs spanning 304 yards, and he’s tied with Aidan Stinebiser for a team-leading six touchdowns. After three wins to open the campaign, the Spartans have been outpaced by a margin of 115-20 the past two weeks.

About the Matchup: The Big Macs are alone in third place in the conference, while the Spartans are tied with Mount Lebanon in last place. Last year, Hempfield Area claimed a wild 33-27 victory.

Southmoreland (5-0, 0-0) at Derry Area (3-2, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Scotties: Powered by Jackson Mickens, Southmoreland bested Ringgold 28-7 in a nonconference matchup last week to remain unblemished. Mickens notched a rushing score, and sealed the win with a 32-yard interception return score for the Scotties. Averyon Darnell posted 89 yards on the ground for Southmoreland, while Dawson Wolfe threw for 79 yards and rushed for a TD. To this juncture, QB Dawson Wolfe has thrown for 559 yards and eight touchdowns, adding 222 yards on the ground and scoring seven times. Mickens paces the Scotties with eight scores, as he’s rushed 50 times for 231 yards. Makel Darnell leads the team with 15 receptions for 177 yards, while Averyon Darnell has rushed for 287 yards. Southmoreland has outscored the opposition by a margin of 195-38.

About the Trojans: Despite a monster performance by Max Doherty, Derry Area fell 41-34 at Indiana Area in a high-scoring nonconference clash. Doherty rushed 26 times for 222 yards, scoring four TDs for the Trojans. Signalcaller Anthony Sacco opened the scoring for Derry Area on a 3-yard run. For the year, Doherty has amassed 99 carries for 627 yards, scoring nine times. Sacco, meanwhile, has completed 35-of-78 throws for 469 yards, with four TDs and five interceptions. Noah Stough is his top target, catching nine passes for 217 yards and three scores.

About the Matchup: This tilt serves as the opener in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. In 2024, the Scotties reigned supreme 31-14.

Clairton (3-1, 2-0) at Jeannette (3-2, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Bears: Clairton obliterated Frazier 72-0 last week in the Class 1A Eastern Conference contest. In four games in 2025, Jeff Thompson has thrown for 839 yards, with a dozen touchdowns and one interception. Brandon Murphy is the top receiver, with 14 catches for 309 yards, while Taris Wooding, Donte Wright, and Michael Ruffin also have double-digit catches. Wright paces Clairton with six touchdowns. After dropping the first game of the season, the Bears have outscored their opponents 194-0 over the past three contests. Wayne Wade is the longtime head coach of Clairton.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette’s defense could not stop Tim Andrasy, who rushed for 257 yards and four scores in leading Leechburg Area to a 36-27 home win against the Jayhawks in a Class 1A Eastern Conference showdown last week. In the loss, Kymon’e Brown rushed 15 times for 135 yard and found the end zone three times, and he also hit on 10-of-26 passing attempts for 156 yards and a TD for Jeannette. Jayce Powell caught three passes for 62 yards, while Xavier Odorisio-Farrow caught a 54-yard touchdown. On the season, Brown has compiled 901 yards passing and nine touchdowns, while he’s rushed for 470 yards and another nine TDs on the ground. Powell has registered 22 receptions for 461 yards, scoring seven times. Jeannette is averaging 35.4 points per game.

About the Matchup: Clairton is tied atop the Class 1A Eastern Conference, deadlocked with Leechburg, while Jeannette is among four teams at 1-1. Last year, the Bears rolled to a 43-0 triumph.

Franklin Regional (0-5, 0-2) at Kiski Area (1-4, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: Franklin Regional could not make a fourth-quarter lead stand, as the host Panthers dropped a 33-28 outcome to Gateway in the Class 5A Big East Conference last Friday. In the setback, the Panthers were led by QB Dominick Devola, who went 13-of-18 passing for 173 yards and two TDs. Amauri Jones-Lane and Jet Taylor added rushing scores for the Panthers, who fumbled on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter. At the halfway point of the regular season, Taylor has 109 carries for 469 yards, scoring a team-best three TDs. Tyrone Leonard is the top receiver for FR, snagging 11 receptions for 118 yards. The Panthers are averaging 13.6 points per game, the lowest mark in the conference.

About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area could not crack the Penn-Trafford defense, nor slow down Nick Ponko, as the Cavaliers suffered a 42-0 road defeat in the Class 5A Big East Conference last week. Landyn Artman went 5-of-6 passing for 23 yards but left with an injury in the first half for the Cavaliers, while Ashton Taylor added 59 yards rushing. Through five contests, Artman has hit on 36-of-73 throws for 499 yards, with six scores and two picks. Teegan Shirley paces KA receivers with 14 catches for 229 yards, while Aven Shirley has nine grabs for 210 yards and a team-leading four TDs. After a shutout in the season opener, the Cavs have permitted 34 or more points in each subsequent contest.

About the Matchup: Both teams are in pursuit of their first win of the Class 5A Big East Conference. In 2024, the Panthers prevailed 35-30. Kiski Area head coach Colyn Haugh is a Franklin Regional grad.

Greater Latrobe (2-3, 1-1) at Woodland Hills (3-2, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: A fourth-quarter field goal for Armstrong proved the difference, as the host River Hawks edged Greater Latrobe 17-14 in Class 5A Big East Conference action last week. QB Dom Scarton and Cash Achhammer found paydirt in the loss for the Wildcats. For the year, Scarton is 36-of-88 through the air for 435 yards, with two scores and four interceptions. Sawyer Butina leads GL with 10 receptions, while AJ Yeboah paces the Wildcats with three touchdowns. With the exception of their three-overtime victory, the Wildcats have scored 14 or fewer points in every game.

About the Wolverines: Woodland Hills smashed Shaler Area 41-7 in a nonconference tussle last week. Taylor Reid posted 19 carries for 229 yards and four TDs. Scoop Smith added eight receptions for 102 yards, and he rushed four times covering 75 yards. On the campaign, Reid has compiled 53 carries for 506 yards, scoring a team-best nine times, while Smith has 21 receptions for 272 yards, notching seven total TDs. QB Cam Walter has completed 58-of-93 throws for 672 yards, tossing six scores and two picks. The Wolverines are averaging 35.4 points per game. Coach Brian Tarrant is at the helm of Woodland Hills.

About the Matchup: Woodland Hills is tied with Armstrong in second place in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Greater Latrobe is deadlocked with Penn-Trafford in fourth. Last season, the Wolverines claimed a 30-20 victory.

Thomas Jefferson (4-1, 0-0) at Belle Vernon Area (1-3, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Jaguars: Thomas Jefferson notched a 35-14 win at home against West Mifflin Area last Friday. Tyler Eber was a workhorse for the Jaguars, as he rushed 33 times for 131 yards and four TDs. Through five games, Eber has 96 carries for 539 yards, reaching the end zone 14 times. Signalcaller Harrison Kolling has thrown for 349 yards and three TDs. Bill Cherpak is the legendary coach of TJ.

About the Leopards: Belle Vernon Area fell at South Fayette 28-7 in a nonconference tussle last Friday. Chace Petrosky compiled 108 yards rushing for the Leopards, while Curty Wade accounted for the lone score on a 1-yard TD run. In four games, Wade has completed 33-of-54 throws for 381 yards, with two TDs and four picks, while he leads BVA with 169 yards rushing and three scores on the ground. Nick Mahalko, Anthony DiCenzo, and Caleb Horner each have eight receptions. The Leopards are scoring an average of 11.5 points on the season.

About the Matchup: This clash serves as the lid lifter in the Class 4A Big Six Conference. Last year, the Jaguars won convincingly, 42-14.

Elizabeth Forward (4-1, 0-0) at Greensburg Salem (2-3, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Elizabeth Forward steamrolled Baldwin 57-0 last week in a nonconference affair. Warriors QB Ryan Messina threw for 121 yards and two scores, while Geo Thompson notched four carries for 60 yards and a pair of TDs. On the year, Messina has amassed 980 yards passing and nine TDs through the air, while he has rushed 63 times for 431 yards and six scores on the ground. His top target is Landon Honick, a Greensburg Central Catholic transfer, who has 26 catches for 377 yards and five touchdowns. EF has outpaced its foes 204-68 on the season. Johnny DeMarco is at the helm of Elizabeth Forward.

About the Golden Lions: Despite a late comeback bid, Greensburg Salem came up short at Ambridge Area, 42-32, in a nonconference clash. In the defeat, Brody Chismar had a stellar outing for the Golden Lions, as he hit 17-of-27 throws for 259 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions, and he rushed 17 times for 77 yards. Max Topper paced GS receivers with six grabs for 82 yards and a score, while Braydon Miller and Tyrese Lewis also had TD grabs. On the year, Chismar has completed 57-of-96 throws for 664 yards, with nine TDs and three picks, while he’s added 86 carries for 301 yards. Topper, meanwhile, has 18 receptions for 214 yards.

About the Matchup: This battle represents the conference opener for both squads in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Last campaign, the Warriors rolled to a 49-17 win.

Yough (2-3, 0-0) at Mount Pleasant Area (3-2, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Yough could not slow down the ground game for Blackhawk, which prevailed 49-6 at home in the battle of the Cougars last week. Quarterback Aidan Shaffer notched the lone score on a run for Yough. For the season, John Gergely has posted 77 carries for 382 yards, while Shaffer has added 44 carries spanning 311 yards and a team-high five TDs. Ryan Sarver is Yough’s top receiver, hauling in 14 passes for 178 yards. After two wins to begin the season, the Cougars have been outscored by a combined margin of 142-6.

About the Vikings: Stephen Predajna notched a pair of rushing scores, and the defense was stifling in Mount Pleasant Area’s 49-0 whitewash of Laurel Highlands in a nonconference contest one week ago. Predajna rushed 10 times for 97 yards for the Vikings, while Kaden Hudec added 61 rushing yards and a TD and Richard Shawley produced 54 yards and a score on the ground. Moreover, Brady Brooks posted a 65-yard punt return score. The Vikings outgained the Mustangs 273-17 on the ground. Through five weeks, Vikings QB Dane Firmstone has completed 23-of-51 attempts for 397 yards, while three players have eclipsed 200 yards rushing.

About the Matchup: Both teams are commencing the Class 3A Interstate Conference slate. In 2024, the Vikings narrowly prevailed, 22-19.

Burrell (1-4, 0-1) at East Allegheny (1-4, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Buccaneers: Burrell could not contain Amos Glenn, who catapulted Freeport Area to a 34-7 victory in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. In the defeat, the host Buccaneers were led by quarterback Antonio Perkins, who threw for 135 yards on 12-of-26 passing and added 26 carries for 130 yards and the only Burrell touchdown. On the year, Perkins has thrown for 532 yards, while he’s accumulated 575 yards on the ground and nine TDs. Trey Coury has added 165 yards rushing and 120 yards receiving. Burrell is averaging 15.0 points, while the Bucs are permitting 31.8 points per game.

About the Wildcats: East Allegheny narrowly edged host Deer Lakes 14-7 last week in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference matchup. Quarterback Cedric Mack went 17-of-25 for 239 yards and two scores, while DJ Warren caught eight passes for 121 yards and a TD. For the year, Mack has completed 63-of-111 attempts for 815 yards, with eight TDs and three interceptions. Frank Cortazzo patrols the sidelines for EA.

About the Matchup: While the Bucs are tied with Valley at 0-1 in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference, the Wildcats are even with Highlands in a tie for third. One year ago, Burrell prevailed 22-14.

Freeport Area (5-0, 2-0) at Valley (0-5, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Yellowjackets: Amos Glenn catapulted Freeport Area to a 34-7 victory against Burrell in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference one week ago. With starting QB Drew Ross out injured, Glenn posted 194 yards and four touchdowns on the ground for the Yellowjackets. On the season, Glenn has amassed 555 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns, which is tied for second most in the WPIAL. The Yellowjackets have outpaced their foes 211-27, and have not permitted more than seven points in any game. Veteran coach John Gaillot remains as the leader of Freeport Area.

About the Vikings: Although Valley had its best showing of the season, the Vikings fell 29-20 against Quaker Valley in a nonconference tilt last Friday. Brendon Knuckles registered an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown for the winless Vikings. Valley has been outscored 202-30 in 2025.

Ligonier Valley (0-5, 0-2) at South Allegheny (5-0, 2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley could not slow down QB Fabian Nixon, who threw four touchdowns in leading Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 40-6 victory at Weller Field in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference last Friday. In the loss for the Rams, Greyson Daugherty hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Levi Foust. On the season, Daugherty has registered 22 catches for 292 yards, while Foust leads LV with 51 carries for 285 yards. The Rams are averaging 7.6 points, while allowing 32.0 points per contest.

About the Gladiators: South Allegheny notched a statement victory last week, blasting South Park 56-7 in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Joe Gamret was the offensive catalyst, producing 23 carries for 144 yards and four TDs, while Drew Cook notched a rushing score, a receiving touchdown, and a punt return TD. On the campaign, Gamret has 65 carries for 450 yards and seven scores, while Cook has 20 receptions for 318 yards, scoring a team-leading eight times. Over the past four weeks, SA has allowed a total of 19 points. Brian Hanson is at the helm of South Allegheny.

About the Matchup: While the Rams are one of two teams in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference sitting at 0-2, the Gladiators are alone atop the standings at 2-0. South Allegheny claimed a 49-28 victory in 2024 at Weller Field.

Norwin (3-2) at North Hills (1-4) – 7 p.m.

About the Knights: Despite leading for most of the night last Friday, homestanding Norwin could not hold on, as North Allegheny rallied for a 20-17 victory in a Class 6A clash. Giovanni Rothrauff compiled 102 yards rushing for the Knights, while Tristyn Tavares threw for 108 yards and rushed for another 82. Jake Knight caught a TD pass for Norwin. In five games this year, Tavares has completed 39-of-67 attempts for 586 yards and nine TDs, and he’s posted 60 carries for 490 yards and eight scores on the ground. Rothrauff leads Norwin with 102 carries for 603 yards, scoring four times, while Potter Brozeski has a team-leading 224 yards receiving. Norwin is averaging 36.2 points per game and allowing 14.8 points.

About the Indians: North Hills blasted Fox Chapel Area 56-7 last week in a Class 5A Northeast Conference contest. Indians quarterback Kelly McCarthy went 11-of-18 passing for 201 yards and three TDs, while he added 51 yards and two scores as a runner. Joseph Lutz hauled in two touchdown receptions, and Justus Green added a pair of scores, including an interception return. This season, McCarthy has accounted for 488 yards and seven scores as a passer. Johnell Edison leads North Hills with 257 yards rushing, while Josiah Mathis has nine receptions for 127 yards. After scoring 26 combined points during the previous three games, all losses, the Indians exploded for 56 last week. With longtime head coach Pat Carey taking a one-year sabbatical, Brody Zangaro is leading the Indians on an interim basis.

About the Matchup: This is a nonconference clash, as the Knights play in Class 6A, while the Indians reside in the Class 5A Northeast Conference. Last year, North Hills prevailed 24-7. The Indians play their home games at Martorelli Stadium in West View.

Penn-Trafford (4-1) at Plum (2-3) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Nick Ponko had a prolific effort for Penn-Trafford, which cruised to a 42-0 home victory against Kiski Area in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Ponko caught five passes spanning 135 yards, and he also threw a 74-yard touchdown on a trick play for the Warriors. PT quarterback Nate Desmond went 8-of-11 for 154 yards, while Cody Yacamelli scored a pair of rushing scores for the Warriors, who led 35-0 at the half. Through five games, Desmond has hit on 52-of-89 throws for 860 yards, with four TDs and two picks. Ponko has compiled 24 catches for 423 yards, while Yacamelli has posted a team-leading 312 yards rushing and six touchdowns, and Ben Grabowski has notched 295 yards on the ground and four total scores.

About the Mustangs: Plum suffered a lopsided 56-14 setback last week at the hands of host Pine-Richland in Class 5A Northeast Conference action. In the defeat, Nico Signor was a bright spot, as he caught seven passes for 92 yards and a TD. On the year, Signor has 18 catches for 322 yards, while Sloan Humphries has snagged 17 receptions for 258 yards. Quarterback John Nonnenberg has completed 61-of-113 throws for 929 yards, with nine TDs and three interceptions. CJ Hart leads the Mustangs with 253 yards on the ground. Veteran coach Matt Morgan remains at the helm of Plum.

About the Matchup: This is a Class 5A nonconference clash, as the Warriors play in the Big East Conference, while the Mustangs compete in the Northeast Conference. Last year, the Warriors prevailed 34-10.

South Side Beaver (4-1) at Monessen (4-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: South Side Beaver notched a 35-7 home win last week against Shenango. Amare Moman rushed 14 times for 131 yards, while Will Morgan had 15 carries for 97 yards and two TDs. On the year, Moman has notched 338 yards on the ground, while Andrew Corfield has scored a team-leading six TDs. Coach Luke Travelpiece leads the program.

About the Greyhounds: Monessen was on the wrong side of a lopsided 55-6 outcome against Fort Cherry last week in a battle of previously-unbeaten teams. In the prior four weeks, the Greyhounds had permitted just 27 points combined.

Greensburg Central Catholic (3-2, 1-1) at Riverview (3-2, 1-1) – SATURDAY 12 p.m.

About the Centurions: Led by Samir Crosby, Greensburg Central Catholic dispatched of host Brentwood 34-6 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference last Friday. Crosby had nine carries for 77 yards and compiled three rushing scores for the Centurions, while Jerry Davis caught three passes for 49 yards and another TD. To this point of the season, Crosby has 37 carries for 314 yards on the ground, along with 17 receptions for 234 yards, compiling nine total touchdowns. QB Bobby Smithnosky has hit on 44-of-70 throws for 568 yards, with seven TDs and four picks.

About the Raiders: Riverview decimated homestanding Springdale 64-14 last week in Class 1A Eastern Conference action. Kaden Levy amassed five carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns, while Max Kratt had a rushing score and a receiving touchdown. On the year, Levy has posted 335 yards on the ground and nine TDs, while signalcaller Connor Kmetz has thrown for 565 yards and seven scores. The Raiders have outscored their adversaries 172-95. Trevor George patrols the sidelines for Riverview.

About the Matchup: The Centurions and Raiders are among the four teams with a 1-1 mark in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. A year ago, GCC reigned supreme, 45-14. Riverview’s field does not have permanent lights, prompting the Saturday afternoon contest.
