Norwin narrowly falls to North Allegheny; Jeannette comes up short at Leechburg; Scotties remain perfect

North Allegheny 20 Norwin 17 - WATCH BROADCAST

Despite leading for most of the night, homestanding Norwin could not hold on, as North Allegheny rallied for a 20-17 victory in a Class 6A clash. The Tigers (5-0, 2-0) created a takeaway via an interception in the fourth quarter, and followed with the go-ahead score by Luke Rohan. Norwin (3-2, 1-1) drove into NA territory, but a turnover on downs sealed the outcome. Giovanni Rothrauff compiled 102 yards rushing for the Knights, while Tristyn Tavares threw for 108 yards and rushed for another 82. Jake Knight caught a TD pass for Norwin.

Penn-Trafford 42 Kiski Area 0 - WATCH BROADCAST

Nick Ponko had a prolific effort for Penn-Trafford, which cruised to a 42-0 home victory against Kiski Area in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Ponko caught five passes spanning 135 yards, and he also threw a 74-yard touchdown on a trick play for the Warriors (4-1, 1-1). PT quarterback Nate Desmond went 8-of-11 for 154 yards, while Cody Yacamelli scored a pair of rushing scores for the Warriors, who led 35-0 at the half. Landyn Artman went 5-of-6 passing for 23 yards but left with an injury in the first half for the Cavaliers (1-4, 0-2), while Ashton Taylor added 59 yards rushing.

Southmoreland 28 Ringgold 7 - WATCH BROADCAST

Powered by Jackson Mickens, Southmoreland bested Ringgold 28-7 in a nonconference matchup to remain unblemished. Mickens notched a rushing score, and sealed the win with a 32-yard interception return score for the Scotties (5-0). Averyon Darnell posted 89 yards on the ground for Southmoreland, while Dawson Wolfe threw for 79 yards and rushed for a TD. In a losing effort, Dennis Hawkins went 9-of-20 for 131 yards for the Rams (3-2), while Demetri Lowe caught eight passes for 105 yards.

Indiana Area 41 Derry Area 34 - WATCH BROADCAST

Despite a monster performance by Max Doherty, Derry Area fell 41-34 at Indiana Area in a high-scoring nonconference clash. Doherty rushed for 222 yards, scoring four TDs for the Trojans (3-2). Roman Jones posted 131 yards and three touchdowns for the Little Indians (2-3), who overcame a fourth-quarter deficit.

Gateway 33 Franklin Regional 28 - LISTEN BROADCAST

Franklin Regional could not make a fourth-quarter lead stand, as the host Panthers dropped a 33-28 outcome to Gateway in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Mayson Mitchell went 14-of-21 for 313 yards and four touchdowns for the Gators (2-3, 2-0). Shawn Moorefield caught eight passes for 174 yards for Gateway. In the setback, the Panthers (0-5, 0-2) were led by QB Dominick Devola, who went 13-of-18 passing for 173 yards and two TDs. Amauri Jones-Lane and Jet Taylor added rushing scores for the Panthers, who fumbled on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter.

Leechburg Area 36 Jeannette 27 - LISTEN BROADCAST

Jeannette’s defense could not stop Tim Andrasy, who rushed for 257 yards and four scores in leading Leechburg Area to a 36-27 home win against the Jayhawks in a Class 1A Eastern Conference showdown. Trailing entering the fourth, the Blue Devils (4-1, 2-0) outpaced Jeannette 15-0. In the loss, Kymon’e Brown rushed 15 times for 135 yard and found the end zone three times, and he also hit on 10-of-26 passing attempts for 156 yards and a TD for Jeannette (3-2, 1-1). Jayce Powell caught three passes for 62 yards, while Xavier Odorisio-Farrow caught a 54-yard touchdown.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic 59 Hempfield Area 7

Hempfield Area was overwhelmed on the road against Pittsburgh Central Catholic, as the Vikings rolled to a 59-7 win in Class 6A play. The Vikings (5-0, 2-0), who scored the first 45 points of the contest, were led by Roman Thompson, who rushed for four touchdowns in the first half. Central Catholic outpaced the Spartans by a margin of 249 to -9 in rushing yards. In the loss for the Spartans (3-2, 0-2), Jack Kopas caught six passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Dom Detruf went 14-of-18 for 137 yards, with one score and one interception.

Armstrong 17 Greater Latrobe 14

A fourth-quarter field goal for Armstrong proved the difference, as the host River Hawks edged Greater Latrobe 17-14 in Class 5A Big East Conference action. A 23-yard kick by Daniel Pearson provided the winning points for the River Hawks (2-3, 1-0), while Theron Cupec snagged eight receptions for 108 yards. QB Dom Scarton and Cash Achhammer found paydirt in the loss for the Wildcats (2-3, 1-1).

Freeport Area 34 Burrell 7

Burrell could not contain Amos Glenn, who catapulted Freeport Area to a 34-7 victory in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. With starting QB Drew Ross out injured, Glenn posted 194 yards and four touchdowns on the ground for the Yellowjackets (5-0, 2-0). In the defeat, the host Buccaneers (1-4, 0-1) were led by quarterback Antonio Perkins, who threw for 135 yards on 12-of-26 passing and added 26 carries for 130 yards and the only Burrell touchdown.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 40 Ligonier Valley 6

Ligonier Valley could not slow down QB Fabian Nixon, who threw four touchdowns in leading Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 40-6 victory at Weller Field in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Christian Bush also added a pair of scores for the Chargers (2-3, 1-1). In the loss for the Rams (0-5, 0-2), Greyson Daugherty hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Levi Foust.

Greensburg Central Catholic 34 Brentwood 6

Led by Samir Crosby, Greensburg Central Catholic dispatched of host Brentwood 34-6 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Crosby compiled three rushing scores for the Centurions (3-2, 1-1). Meanwhile, Cedric Davis posted 169 yards through the air of the Spartans (2-3, 1-1).

Fort Cherry 55 Monessen 6

Matt Sieg set the WPIAL career touchdown record, leading Fort Cherry to a dominant 55-6 win against Monessen in a battle of previously-unbeaten teams. Sieg rushed for 172 yards and three scores on the ground, breaking the record of 117 career TDs previously shared by Clairton alums Tyler Boyd and Lamont Wade.

South Fayette 28 Belle Vernon Area 7

Belle Vernon Area fell at South Fayette 28-7 in a nonconference tussle. The Lions (4-1) were led by Aayden Wright, who had a TD run and an interception return score, and quarterback Drew Welhorsky, who threw for 150 yards. Chace Petrosky compiled 108 yards rushing for the Leopards (1-3), while Curty Wade accounted for the lone score on a 1-yard TD run.

Mount Pleasant Area 49 Laurel Highlands 0

Stephen Predajna notched a pair of rushing scores, and the defense was stifling in Mount Pleasant Area’s 49-0 whitewash of Laurel Highlands in a nonconference contest. Predajna rushed 10 times for 97 yards for the Vikings (3-2), while Kaden Hudec added 61 rushing yards and a TD and Richard Shawley added 54 yards and a score on the ground. Moreover, Brady Brooks posted a 65-yard punt return score. The Vikings outgained the Mustangs (2-3) 273-17 on the ground.

Ambridge Area 42 Greensburg Salem 32

Despite a late comeback bid, Greensburg Salem came up short at Ambridge Area, 42-32, in a nonconference clash. Bridgers signalcaller DJ Cain compiled 202 yards through the air and two scores, and he added 104 yards and two TDs rushing for the Bridgers (1-4). In the defeat, Brody Chismar had a stellar outing for the Golden Lions (2-3), as he hit 17-of-27 throws for 259 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions, and he rushed 17 times for 77 yards. Max Topper paced GS receivers with six grabs for 82 yards and a score, while Braydon Miller and Tyrese Lewis also had TD grabs.

Blackhawk 49 Yough 6

Yough could not slow down the ground game for Blackhawk, which prevailed 49-6 at home in the battle of the Cougars. Ryan Prisuta contributed 102 yards and three scores on the ground for Blackhawk (2-3), which claimed a 42-0 lead at the half. Quarterback Aidan Shaffer notched the lone score on a run for Yough (2-3).

Quaker Valley 29 Valley 20

Although Valley had its best showing of the season, the Vikings fell 29-20 against Quaker Valley in a nonconference tilt. Brendon Knuckles registered an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown for the Vikings (0-5), but Atticus Barr tossed three scores for the Quakers (3-2).
