Norwin seeks to pull off stunner against NA; Warriors and Cavs battle in Westmoreland matchup; Scotties aim to remain perfect

While numerous teams across the WPIAL opened the conference ledger last week, more commence this weekend. In addition to an all-Westmoreland clash in the Class 5A Big East Conference, the two remaining unblemished teams in the county face stiff tests, while three others remain in pursuit of their first win of 2025. Here’s a closer look at all of the Westmoreland County games in Week Four.

North Allegheny (4-0, 1-0) at Norwin (3-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Tigers: North Allegheny used its rushing attack to great success against Hempfield Area, as the host Tigers rolled to a 56-13 win in Class 6A play last week. Brady Brinkley compiled 85 yards and two scores on the ground, while adding 126 yards and a TD through the air for NA. Luke Rohan posted 88 yards and a touchdown, as well, for the Tigers. Through four contests, Rohan has rushed for 350 yards and scored nine times, while Brinkley has amassed 576 yards and seven TDs through the air. The Tigers are averaging 40.0 points scored, and permit an average of 9.7 points. Art Walker is the veteran head coach of North Allegheny.

**About the Knights: Norwin QB Tristyn Tavares factored into five touchdowns, as the Knights dominated host Seneca Valley 56-13 in Class 6A play. The senior signalcaller went 6-of-9 passing for 88 yards and three scores, while he rushed 8 times for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Moreover, Giovanni Rothrauff registered 21 carries for 130 yards and a TD, Potter Brozeski contributed a 96-yard kickoff return score, and Josh Lenart, Jake Knight, Zach Pawling, and Parker Rigo all found pay dirt for Norwin. Through four games, Tarvares has accumulated 469 yards and seven touchdowns as a passer, while he’s rushed for 404 yards and eight scores on the ground. Rothrauff, meanwhile, has 79 carries for 491 yards, scoring four times. Norwin has averaged 41.0 points per contest.

About the Matchup: North Allegheny and Norwin are two of the three teams that are 1-0 in Class 6A play. Last year, the Tigers claimed a 36-14 victory.

Kiski Area (1-3, 0-1) at Penn-Trafford (3-1, 0-1) – 7:30 p.m.

About the Cavaliers: Despite strong showings from Landyn Artman and Aven Shirley, Kiski Area fell 34-31 at Gateway in a Class 5A Big East Conference battle last Friday. Artman threw for 142 yards and four scores through the air, Aven Shirley registered three touchdowns and an interception, and Teegan Shirley and Andrew Finney added TD receptions for the Cavaliers. On the season, Teegan Shirley has 14 receptions for 229 yards, while Aven Shirley has snagged nine catches for 210 yards and a team-best four TDs. Artman has hit on 32-of-66 throws for 478 yards, with six touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. After posting a shutout in their first game, the Cavs have permitted 34 or more points in each of the past three tilts.

About the Warriors: Penn-Trafford fell 49-21 to host Woodland Hills in Class 5A Big East Conference action last week. Cody Yacamelli paced PT with 145 yards on the ground, including an 80-yard TD, while Ben Grabowski also scored a touchdown in his return to the lineup for the Warriors, rushing 17 times for 68 yards. Penn-Trafford committed three turnovers, and also had five turnovers on downs. On the season, QB Nate Desmond has gone 44-of-78 for 706 yards, with four TD and two interceptions. His top receiver is Nick Ponko, who has 19 receptions for 288 yards. Yacamelli paces the PT rushing attack with 272 yards on 39 carries, while Grabowski has compiled 270 yards on 47 attempts.

About the Matchup: Both teams are in search of their first win in Class 5A Big East Conference play after setbacks last week. A year ago, PT rolled to a 33-7 win.

Ringgold (3-1) at Southmoreland (4-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ringgold notched a 33-13 win at Greensburg Salem last Friday in a nonconference matchup. Dennis Hawkins amassed 220 yards and three scores through the air for the Rams, while Amoni Ward added 163 yards rushing and 98 yards receiving, notching two total touchdowns. On the season, Hawkins has completed 33-of-60 throws for 560 yards, with eight scores, while Ward has posted 70 carries for 709 yards and eight scores. Demetri Love leads the Rams with 20 receptions for 330 yards, scoring four times. The Rams have outpaced their opposition 155-60. Coach Rob Heller patrols the sidelines for Ringgold.

About the Scotties: Jackson Mickens scored twice, including on a blocked punt, to help Southmoreland remain undefeated in a 24-17 win at Blackhawk last week. Mickens returned the block 19 yards for a score, and he rushed for 41 yards for the Scotties. Additionally, Dawson Wolfe threw for 114 yards, and he added a touchdown run. Through four contests, Wolfe is 35-of-58 passing for 487 yards, with eight TDs and two picks, and he’s rushed for 195 yards and six scores on the ground. Makel Darnell paces the Scotties with 15 receptions for 177 yards. The Scotties have averaged 41.7 points and have allowed just 7.7 points per game.

About the Matchup: The nonconference tilt pits the Rams, from the Class 4A Big Six Conference, against the Scotties, who reside in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. In 2024, Southmoreland prevailed 32-15.

Derry Area (3-1) at Indiana Area (1-3) – 7 p.m.

About the Trojans: Max Doherty scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to propel Derry Area to a 13-7 home victory against Burrell in a nonconference clash one week ago. A sack and forced fumble by Dylan Pitzer in the final minute sealed the victory for the Trojans (3-1). Doherty compiled 22 carries for 103 yards and two scores, while Anthony Sacco threw for 91 yards. To this point of the season, Doherty has amassed 73 carries for 444 yards, caught five passes for 115 yards, and has scored six times. Sacco has hit on 25-of-58 throws for 390 yards, with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

About the Little Indians: Indiana Area notched its first win of the season last week, a 48-7 blowout at home against Laurel Highlands. Quarterback Jason Strack threw for 79 yards and two scores, and he rushed for 48 yards and another TD on the ground. Elijah Thomas posted 42 yards rushing and a touchdown, and he added a 30-yard receiving score. The Little Indians enjoyed an offensive explosion after posting just 20 total points through the first three tilts. Mark Zilinskas is in the first year of his second tenure guiding Indiana Area.

About the Matchup: While Derry Area plays in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, Indiana calls the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference its home. Last season, the Trojans scored a 21-0 whitewash.

Gateway (1-3, 1-0) at Franklin Regional (0-4, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Gators: Gateway edged Kiski Area 34-31 in Monroeville last week in a Class 5A Big East Conference battle. Mayson Mitchell threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, along with three interceptions, for the Gators. The Gators have used three different players extensively at QB this season, including Mitchell, who has 399 yards passing and four scores. Shawn Moorefield has been the top target, hauling in 16 passes spanning 244 yards and scoring three times. Tristan Huston paces the ground game with 155 yards. Don Holl is the veteran coach of Gateway.

About the Panthers: Franklin Regional fell 13-7 on the road against Greater Latrobe in the Class 5A Big East Conference last Friday. Quarterback Dominick Devola accounted for the Panthers’ lone score, a 6-yard run, but he was intercepted with approximately 90 seconds left in the contest. Jet Taylor posted 18 carries for 51 yards in the setback. Through four weeks, Taylor has amassed 96 carries for 414 yards, while Devola has hit on 23-of-57 throws for 215 yards, with three scores and three interceptions. The Panthers are averaging 10.0 points per contest.

About the Matchup: While the Gators are seeking a 2-0 start in the Class 5A Big East Conference, the Panthers are hoping to avoid 0-2 in the conference. Last year, Franklin Regional narrowly prevailed, 36-34.

Jeannette (3-1, 1-0) at Leechburg Area (3-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: A flurry of scores in the first half gave Jeannette an insurmountable lead, as the Jayhawks overwhelmed Frazier 61-19 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference lid lifter one week ago. Kymon’e Brown scored four touchdowns on the ground, including a 68-yard TD run to open the scoring, and Hunter Schaeffer reeled off a 69-yard kickoff return score to propel the Jayhawks. Brown finished with 142 yards rushing, while he threw for 102 yards and two scores. Jayce Powell had four receptions for 58 yards and two TDs for the Jayhawks. On the year, Brown has completed 36-of-68 attempts for 745 yards, with eight scores and two interceptions, while he’s rushed 31 times for 335 yards, scoring six times. Powell leads Jeannette with seven total scores, as he’s caught 19 passes for 399 yards. Jeannette boasts a scoring margin of 150-70.

About the Blue Devils: Leechburg Area outlasted Riverview 27-18 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference opener for the annual night game in Oakmont. Tim Andrasy registered 33 carries for 162 yards and three scores, while Jaxon Vargo passed for 40 yards and rushed for 72 yards and a TD. Through four weeks, Andrasy has posted 98 carries for 691 yards, scoring 13 times, which is tied for the most in the entire WPIAL. The Blue Devils are permitting 11.0 points per game. Coach Randy Walters patrols the sidelines for Leechburg Area.

About the Matchup: Both teams were victorious to kick off Class 1A Eastern Conference play a week ago. In 2024, the Blue Devils claimed a 35-13 win. Leechburg plays its home games at Veterans Memorial Field in Leechburg.

Hempfield Area (3-1, 0-1) at Pittsburgh Central Catholic (3-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Spartans: Hempfield Area could not contain the rushing attack of North Allegheny, as the host Spartans fell 56-13 in Wexford in Class 6A play last week. The Spartans scored on a 10-yard connection from Dom Detruf to Aidan Stinebiser in the first quarter, while JM Landa tallied a 23-yard TD run in the second half. To this point of the season, Detruf has completed 48-of-68 attempts for 752 yards and nine scores, along with five interceptions, and he’s added 161 yards on the ground. Jack Kopas paces Spartans pass catchers with 14 grabs for 217 yards, while Stinebiser has scored a team-leading six TDs.

About the Vikings: Central Catholic steamrolled Mount Lebanon 57-0 a week ago in the Class 6A opener. Roman Thompson rushed four times for 27 yards, scoring three touchdowns, while Jaeden Pearson also posted 96 yards and a score on the ground. QB Owen Herrick went 7-of-12 for 149 yards and a TD. On the campaign, Thompson has 28 carries for 311 yards, scoring nine times. Herrick, who garnered Division I interest before his first varsity start, has gone 46-of-88 for 722 yards and six touchdowns. Maceo Watkins is his favorite target, catching 11 passes for 306 yards. Over the past two weeks, the Vikings have scored 115 points. Ryan Lehmeier is at the helm of Central Catholic.

About the Matchup: This represents the second Class 6A contest for each team. Last year, the Vikings rolled to a 42-0 victory. The game will be played at West Mifflin Area High School.

Greater Latrobe (2-2, 1-0) at Armstrong (1-3, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: Chris Cochran notched a long touchdown and Sawyer Butina snagged an interception late to seal Greater Latrobe’s 13-7 home victory against Franklin Regional in the Class 5A Big East Conference last Friday. Cochran compiled 133 yards on the ground for the Wildcats, while QB Dom Scarton also found paydirt on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Although he left early last week with injury, AJ Yeboah paces GL with 50 carries, 210 yards rushing, and three total touchdowns. Scarton has completed 28-of-72 throws for 330 yards, with two scores and three interceptions. The Wildcats are averaging 17.0 points per game.

About the River Hawks: Armstrong played a nonconference tilt at Canon-McMillan last week, a 31-21 setback. Quarterback Deo Beck was impressive in the loss, throwing for 302 yards and three touchdowns, along with a pair of interceptions. Quinn Olsen was his top target, as he caught nine passes for 115 yards and two scores, while Xavier Williams hauled in eight passes and Theron Cupec made seven catches, including a touchdown. For the season, Beck has completed 60-of-98 throws for 650 yards, with seven scores and seven interceptions. Olsen, meanwhile, has snagged 34 receptions for 454 yards and a team-best six touchdowns, while Costa Couknas has rushed for 379 yards and scored five times. The River Hawks are allowing 36.5 points per game. Frank Fabian is the veteran head coach of Armstrong.

About the Matchup: While the Wildcats aim for a 2-0 start in the Class 5A Big East Conference, this is the opener for the River Hawks. Last season, Greater Latrobe secured a 14-0 win.

Freeport Area (4-0, 1-0) at Burrell (1-3, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Yellowjackets: Freeport Area stayed perfect last week with a 58-7 throttling of Deer Lakes in Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference play. The host Yellowjackets received a big game from Amos Glenn, who rushed for 126 yards and two scores, and he added a 64-yard punt return score. Paxton Cene also eclipsed 100 yards rushing, totaling 106 yards and a score on the ground. On the year, Glenn has compiled 350 yards rushing and has scored a dozen times. Quarterback Drew Ross has completed 36-of-48 throws for 411 yards, with four touchdowns, and he’s added 205 yards and four scores on the ground. The Yellowjackets have outscored their foes by a margin of 177-20 this season. John Gaillot remains at the helm of Freeport.

About the Buccaneers: Max Doherty’s fourth-quarter touchdown for Derry Area doomed Burrell in a 13-7 road loss last week in a nonconference clash. In the defeat for the Buccaneers, Trey Coury scored the lone touchdown on a 1-yard run. QB Antonio Perkins went 11-of-24 passing for 80 yards, while he added 63 yards rushing and snagged an interception on defense. Thus far this season, Perkins has thrown for 398 yards, while he’s rushed 61 times for 437 yards, scoring eight touchdowns. Coury, meanwhile, has 57 carries for 165 yards.

About the Matchup: While Freeport Area looks to move to 2-0 in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference, Burrell is playing its first conference tilt. In 2024, the Yellowjackets left no doubt, cruising to a 42-0 triumph.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (1-3, 0-1) at Ligonier Valley (0-4, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Chargers: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart dropped its third straight game last week, a 28-6 defeat against South Allegheny in Class 2A Allegheny Conference action. The lone score for the Chargers came on a 55-yard interception return by Christopher Harris. On the year, Jamire Samuels leads OLSH with 27 carries for 128 yards and two scores, while John Anderson has nine receptions for 117 yards. The Chargers have scored just 13 combined points over the past three contests. Donnie Militzer serves as the head coach for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley fell 42-6 at Shady Side Academy in Class 2A Allegheny Conference action one week ago. Bryce Vida registered the only score for the Rams. Jacob Petalino led the LV rushing attack with 34 yards, while Bowie Schreyer threw for 28 yards, and Greyson Daugherty caught five passes spanning 52 yards. Through four tilts, Levi Foust leads Ligonier Valley with 30 carries for 195 yards, while Brody Stitt has contributed 116 yards on the ground. The Rams are averaging 8.0 points per game.

About the Matchup: Both teams are seeking a bounce-back effort after dropping the opener in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Last year, OLSH triumphed 28-7.

Greensburg Central Catholic (2-2, 0-1) at Brentwood (2-2, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Centurions: Host Greensburg Central Catholic had no answers for QB Jeff Thompson and could not solve the Clairton defense, as the Centurions were blanked by the Bears 43-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference matchup. Samir Crosby had two receptions for 34 yards for the Centurions. On the campaign, Crosby has produced 251 yards rushing, 225 yards receiving, and scored six touchdowns. Signalcaller Bobby Smithnosky has gone 34-of-55 for 454 yards, with six touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. GCC has narrowly outscored its adversaries, 101-94.

About the Spartans: Brentwood blasted Springdale 42-0 in Class 1A Eastern Conference action. Cedric Davis proved nearly unstoppable, as he hit 8-of-10 throws for 162 yards, and he rushed five times for 67 yards and three TDs. Nicky Wardzinski also found paydirt twice, rushing for 64 yards. Over the past two contests, the Spartans have outscored their foes by a combined 83-0. Nick Caponi serves as Brentwood’s head coach.

About the Matchup: While the Centurions seek a winning response after last week’s conference setback, the Spartans are aiming for a 2-0 start in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. A year ago, GCC reigned supreme, 34-12.

Monessen (4-0, 1-0) at Fort Cherry (4-0, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Greyhounds: Courtesy of touchdowns by Michael Hines and Kayden Kolbeck, Monessen edged homestanding Serra Catholic 13-6 in Class 1A Black Hills Conference play last Friday.

About the Rangers: Fort Cherry stayed perfect last week with a 44-14 win at Chartiers-Houston. Quarterback Matt Sieg, a Penn State pledge, has thrown for 389 yards and eight scores, and has rushed for 256 yards and six TDs on the ground.

Belle Vernon Area (1-2) at South Fayette (3-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Leopards: An injury to quarterback Curty Wade loomed large in Belle Vernon Area’s 20-7 home loss to McKeesport Area in a nonconference showdown one week ago. Wade was 5-of-5 passing for 95 yards in the first half, and he added an 18-yard TD run, but he was sidelined early in the third quarter, and the Leopards sputtered offensively from that point forward. On the year, Wade has thrown for 363 yards and rushed for 160. Nick Mahalko leads BVA with 125 yards receiving. The Leopards are averaging just 13.0 points per game.

About the Lions: South Fayette narrowly edged Elizabeth Forward 27-24 one week ago. Lions signalcaller Drew Welhorsky threw for 138 yards and two scores, and he also rushed 15 times for 107 yards. Aayden Wright added 145 yards rushing and a touchdown. In 2025, Welhorsky has thrown for 570 yards and seven TDs, and he’s rushed for 421 yards. Daniel Speca is the top receiver for the Lions, snagging 11 passes for 271 yards. South Fayette is under the guidance of coach Marty Spieler.

About the Matchup: While Belle Vernon Area plays in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, South Fayette is in the 5A Allegheny Six Conference. A year ago, the Lions scored a 27-14 victory.

Greensburg Salem (2-2) at Ambridge Area (0-4) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: Greensburg Salem suffered a 33-13 home loss to Ringgold in a nonconference matchup last week. Brody Chismar hit on 9-of-20 throws for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 72 yards for the Golden Lions. Furthermore, Tyrese Lewis and Braydon Miller were on the receiving end of the scores, as Miller paced GS with three grabs for 53 yards. Through four weeks, Chismar has compiled 405 yards and six scores through the air, while he also leads Greensburg Salem with 224 yards rushing. Max Topper paces the Golden Lions with a dozen receptions for 132 yards.

About the Bridgers: Ambridge Area remained winless last week, as a fourth-quarter touchdown and subsequent extra point by Mount Pleasant Area proved the difference in a 28-27 outcome. DJ Cain compiled 163 yards rushing in the loss for the Bridgers. Prior to last week’s output, the Bridgers had scored just 16 points total through their first three games. Coach Sherm McBride is at the helm of Ambridge Area.

About the Matchup: While the Golden Lions are in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, the Bridgers reside in the Class 4A Parkway Conference. In 2024, Ambridge prevailed 27-8.

Mount Pleasant Area (2-2) at Laurel Highlands (2-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: A fourth-quarter touchdown by Dane Firmstone and subsequent extra point by Tyke Snyder proved the difference, as host Mount Pleasant Area edged Ambridge Area. Freshman Kaden Hudec rushed 20 times for 118 yards, including two TDs for the Vikings, while Richard Shawley added 98 yards and a score on the ground. Shawley leads the Vikings with 215 yards rushing for the season, while Firmstone has passed for 320 yards.

About the Mustangs: Laurel Highlands was on the wrong end of a lopsided outcome, 48-7, at Indiana Area one week ago. On the year, Gio Guerriere leads the Mustangs with 155 yards rushing, while Nicholas Crouch has eight receptions for 142 yards. In the past two weeks, Laurel Highlands has been outscored 102-14. Aaron Raffle serves as the head coach for the Mustangs.

About the Matchup: The nonconference clash pits Mount Pleasant Area, from the Class 3A Interstate, against Laurel Highlands, which resides in the Class 4A Big Six Conference. In 2024, the Mustangs notched a 21-20 overtime victory.

Blackhawk (1-3) at Yough (2-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Blackhawk Cougars: Jackson Mickens scored twice, including on a blocked punt, for Southmoreland, as Blackhawk suffered a 24-17 home defeat one week ago. Brayden McCarthy notched both touchdowns for the Cougars. To this point of the season, McCarthy has rushed 70 times for 710 yards, scoring 10 total touchdowns. Jack Chevalier has thrown for 242 yards, but with four interceptions. The Cougars are permitting 37.7 points per game. Blackhawk is under the guidance of coach Jake Wickline.

About the Yough Cougars: Yough failed to find the end zone in a 53-0 loss on the road against New Castle last week. John Gergely had 10 rushes for 24 yards in the defeat, as the Cougars were blanked for the second week in a row. In 2025, Gergely has posted 67 carries for 357 yards, while Ryan Sarver leads the team with 11 receptions for 116 yards.

About the Matchup: Blackhawk is a member of the Class 4A Parkway Conference, whereas Yough is in the Class 3A Interstate. Last year, Blackhawk rolled to a 57-6 triumph.

Quaker Valley (2-2) at Valley (0-4) – 7 p.m.

About the Quakers: Quaker Valley was overmatched in a 49-0 loss against North Catholic last Friday. For the year, Ben McHenry leads the Quakers with 207 yards rushing and three TDs. After consecutive wins to start the year, QV has been outpaced by a 91-7 margin the past two weeks.

About the Vikings: Valley could not slow down Gabe Jenkins, as the Vikings were whitewashed 72-0 against Imani Christian Academy in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference last Friday. The Vikings have been shut out in three of four games this year, and have been outscored 173-10.
