A couple of Westmoreland County golfers garnered silver medals this week, as Greater Latrobe’s Jack Sacriponte and Luke Sikora of Greensburg Salem finished as runners-up in their respective classifications in the WPIAL Individual Golf Championship.
Sacriponte, a senior, carded a two-round score of 140, two-under par in Class 3A. He finished six strokes behind winner Carson Kittsley, a Fox Chapel Area junior who totaled 134. In the first round last Monday at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo, Sacriponte carded a two-under par 70, which tied for third. This week, Sacriponte again shot a round of 70, which was good for even par, at Butler Country Club. He was one of three Westmoreland County boys golfers to qualify for the state tournament in 3A, as Kiski Area senior Max Mottura placed fourth at 143, while his teammate, sophomore Brady Jankowski, finished in 14th place, which was the final qualifier for the PIAA event. Belle Vernon Area senior Jack Edwards failed to qualify, finishing in a tie for 25th.
In Class 2A, Sikora, a sophomore, compiled a two-round score of 146, which was three-over par. In the opening round last Monday at Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell, he shot an even-par 71, which was good for second best. On Tuesday in the final round at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray, Sikora carded a three-over par 75. Thus, he finished two strokes behind Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior Jonah Schollaert, who totaled 144. Ligonier Valley senior Tyler Jones tied for 8th place with a score of 156.
On the girls side, no Westmoreland County golfers made the cut in Class 3A. Norwin senior Adalena Robb was the top finisher, as she placed ninth with a two-round total of 171, which was 27-over par. Hempfield Area senior Kat Devito, and Franklin Regional seniors Athena Neuschwander and Gianna Johnson were also in the field. Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward claimed gold for the second time with a two-round score of 144, which was even par.
In Class 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic’s Kennedy Kelly placed third. Kelly, a junior, carded a score of 166, which was 22-over par. After firing an 85 in the opening round last week, Kelly carded a nine-over par 81 yesterday at Sewickley Heights Golf Club. Winner Alyssa Zhang of Shady Side Academy successfully defended her crown with a two-round score of 151. Greensburg Central Catholic senior Alayna Stawovy placed sixth with a total of 171, while Ligonier Valley senior Addy Witcowski earned the final qualifying bid by finishing ninth with a score of 185. Belle Vernon Area junior Sydney Stark, Morgan Miller, a junior from Mount Pleasant Area, and the Southmoreland duo of junior Kendall Campbell and senior Kearlyn Fedorko all missed the cut.
The PIAA Championships will be contested at Penn State University on Oct. 20.
