Westmoreland County golfers qualify for WPIAL championship round

21 area golfers will compete for a WPIAL title next week

13 boys and eight girls golfers from Westmoreland County schools qualified for the WPIAL championship round next week after participating in first round action on Monday and Tuesday.

In Class 3A, defending WPIAL champion Nick Turowski of Penn-Trafford is tied for second place after day one carding a 2-over-par 73 at Champion Lakes Golf Club on Tuesday. Turowski, a junior, is tied with Connor Walker of Central Catholic. Rocco Salvitti, also from Central Catholic, leads the pack after shooting a 71.

Franklin Regional's Nolan Shilling and Norwin's Alex Graham finished tied for 14th place in 3A.

Derry Area senior Hunter Jurica is tied for first place with Brownsville's Daniel Sethman in the Class 2A tournament after firing a 4-over 74 on Monday at Hannastown Country Club. Jurica claimed the Westmoreland County Coaches Association championship in September.

Also in 2A, Ryan Karfelt (Mount Pleasant), Josh Harbert (Ligonier Valley) and Wade Boyle (Greensburg CC) each shot a 77 and are tied for sixth place. Braden Riley (Greensburg CC) is tied for 14th, Jordan Mocello (Belle Vernon) is 21st, Ashton Beighley (Derry Area) finished 24th, Seth Tomalski (Belle Vernon) came in 29th and Tucker Bitar (Burrell) is tied for 30th.

On the girls side, Franklin Regional's Ali Boyle is sitting in 11th place in the Class 3A field after posting an 87 in the first round at Youghigheny Country Club. Milana Yannascoli of Hempfield Area is 12th and Penn-Trafford's Antolena Damico is tied for 13th place. Franklin Regional's Gianna Johnson is in 18th and Adalena Robb from Norwin sits in 27th.

In Class 2A, Izabela Aigner of Greensburg Central Catholic is situated in third place with an 85 at Youghigheny Country Club while Allison Tepper (Mount Pleasant) and Brenna LaMendola (Belle Vernon) are 14th and 18th respectively.

This is the first year the WPIAL golf championships is being held across two rounds.

The championship round will take place on October 3rd for girls Class 3A and 2A at Valleybrook Country Club. The boys 2A finals will be on October 4th at Oakmont Country Club with boys Class 3A being held on October 6th at Allegheny Country Club.
