Through two weeks of the high school football season, trends are already forming, as five Westmoreland County teams are 2-0, while five others are in search of their first victory. Additionally, this week’s slate features five all-Westmoreland clashes. Here’s a closer examination of all of the county games in Week Two.
Norwin (1-1) at Greater Latrobe (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Knights: Five different players scored as Norwin posted a lopsided home win, 42-7, against Kiski Area last Friday. The Knights outgained the Cavaliers 426-120 in total yardage, spearheaded by QB Tristyn Tavares, who threw for 149 yards and a score and added 49 yards and a TD on the ground. Giovanni Rothrauff registered 120 yards and two scores rushing, while Potter Brozeski, Josh Lenart, and Dylan Grives also reached the end zone for the Knights. For the year, Tavares has thrown for 248 yards and two scores, and he’s rushed for an identical 248 yards, along with four TDs. Rothrauff, meanwhile, has amassed 243 yards on the ground.
About the Wildcats: A defensive stop in the third overtime proved the difference, as host Greater Latrobe edged Plum 42-35 in a thriller last week. AJ Yeboah rushed for 98 yards and scored touchdowns in each of the three OT periods for the Wildcats, while QB Dom Scarton went 12-of-20 for 140 yards and two TDs. Greater Latrobe head coach Tom McIntyre earned his first career victory in the process.
About the Matchup: While the Knights compete in Class 6A, the Wildcats reside in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Last year, Greater Latrobe notched a 42-28 victory.
Kiski Area (1-1) at Hempfield (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area was overmatched last week in a 42-7 loss at Norwin. Lucas Vacanti scored the only points for the Cavaliers on a 6-yard pass from Landyn Artman in the final frame, as Artman hit on 10-of-19 passing attempts for 101 yards in his season debut. On the year, Ashton Taylor paces KA with 34 carries for 123 yards and a TD, while Teegan Shirley has six receptions for 81 yards.
About the Spartans: Jack Kopas and Aidan Stinebiser each scored twice, leading Hempfield Area to a 31-14 victory at Franklin Regional last Friday. Stinebiser rushed 18 times for 103 yards, while Kopas hauled in two passes for 30 yards and a score, and he added another TD on an interception return. Spartans quarterback Dom Detruf posted another impressive stat line, hitting 10-of-18 passes for 201 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, while he added 68 yards on the ground. Sawyer Leuthold hit a 40-yard field goal in the triumph. On the year, Stinebiser has compiled 233 yards rushing and four scores, while Detruf has thrown for 408 yards and four TDs.
About the Matchup: Kiski Area plays in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Hempfield Area is in Class 6A. Last year, the Spartans edged the Cavs 31-29.
Derry Area (1-1) at Deer Lakes (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Trojans: Freeport Area overwhelmed Derry Area, as the host Yellowjackets cruised to a 49-6 victory one week ago. Max Doherty accounted for the lone score for the Trojans, a 17-yard run in the second quarter. Through two games, Doherty has rushed 29 times for 254 yards, scoring three times. QB Anthony Sacco has completed 8-of-20 passes for 111 yards, with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
About the Lancers: Deer Lakes fell at home to South Park 35-14 one week ago. In the setback, Ryan Love rushed 29 times for 143 yards and a touchdown, while Dante Mangieri threw for 168 yards and a score. On the campaign, Love has notched 57 carries for 261 yards, while Mangieri has completed 20-of-43 throws for 232 yards. The Lancers have averaged 18.5 points per game, while allowing 21.0 per contest. Tim Burk is the head of the Deer Lakes program.
About the Matchup: Both teams compete in Class 3A, with the Trojans in the Interstate Conference, and the Lancers in the Allegheny Seven Conference. In 2024, Deer Lakes prevailed 34-12.
Ligonier Valley (0-2) at Jeannette (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley fell into an early deficit and came up short in its rally, falling 14-12 against Greensburg Salem at Weller Field last week. Greyson Daugherty notched both scores for the Rams, catching passes for Anthony Petalino and Levi Foust. In 2025, Foust has rushed 20 times for 149 yards, while Brody Stitt has 16 carries for 82 yards. Daughterty, meanwhile, has caught seven passes for 104 yards. LV is averaging just 13.0 points per game.
About the Jayhawks: Jeannette scored 35 unanswered points, keyed by Kymon’e Brown, in a 35-22 road victory against Apollo-Ridge at Owens Field last week. Brown compiled 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air for the Jayhawks, while Jayce Powell caught six passes for 80 yards and a score and he also found paydirt on his lone carry. On the year, Brown has thrown for 394 yards and three TDs, while he’s rushed 18 times for 170 yards and another two scores on the ground. Powell has snagged 10 passes for 211 yards, scoring three total touchdowns.
About the Matchup: While the Rams play in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, the Jayhawks call the Class 1A Eastern Conference home. Last year, Jeannette narrowly prevailed, 34-27.
Penn-Trafford (2-0) at Moon Area (2-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Warriors: Nick Ponko registered a pair of touchdown receptions, as Penn-Trafford edged homestanding Mount Lebanon 26-18. Ponko caught eight passes spanning 151 yards for the Warriors, while QB Nate Desmond amassed 222 yards on 15-of-23 attempts through the air. Cody Yacamelli paced the rushing attack with 10 carries for 43 yards, while Landyn Stikkel notched 10 tackles. On the season, Ben Grabowski has rushed 30 times for 202 yards, Ponko has nine receptions for 162 yards, while Desmond has registered 319 yards and three TDs.
About the Tigers: Moon Area outclassed homestanding Montour 41-13 last week. Andrew Cross hit 4-of-7 throws for 74 yards and three touchdowns. Antoine Arnett paced the ground game, rushing for 160 yards and two scores on 26 attempts. On the season, Cross has completed 14-of-27 attempts for 182 yards and four TDs. Savario Vandetti and Jacob Warnagiris have each caught four passes. The Tigers have permitted 13 points in each of their first two tilts. Ryan Linn is the accomplished head coach of Moon.
About the Matchup: Both teams play in Class 5A, with the Warriors playing in the Big East Conference, and the Tigers competing in the Allegheny Six Conference. Last season, PT came out on top, 14-7. The Warriors also defeated Moon in the 2021 WPIAL Class 5A Championship.
Upper St. Clair (2-0) at Franklin Regional (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the USC Panthers: Upper St. Clair dominated Canon-McMillan 48-0 one week ago. Quarterback Ethan Helmann was stellar, hitting 14-of-18 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Drew Sanderson caught two passes for 68 yards and a pair of scores, while Josh Snyder rushed six times for 58 yards and a TD. Two games into his season, Hellmann has compiled 514 yards and seven touchdowns. The Panthers are averaging 41.5 points per game and allowing just 7.0. Mike Junko patrols the sidelines for USC.
About the FR Panthers: Franklin Regional rallied from an early deficit to Hempfield Area, but the Panthers sputtered again in the second half in a 31-14 loss at home last Friday. After the Panthers fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Jet Taylor helped pull FR even, rushing 20 times for 153 yards and a TD. This season, Taylor has 48 carries for 251 yards, while signalcaller Dominick Devola has hit on 12-of-33 throws for 125 yards. FR has been limited to 13.5 points per game.
About the Matchup: In the Class 5A nonconference clash, Upper St. Clair is in the Allegheny Six Conference, while Franklin Regional is in the Big East. In the battle of the Panthers in 2024, USC rolled to a 45-7 victory.
Belle Vernon Area (0-1) at Central Valley (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Leopards: Belle Vernon Area was overmatched in a 42-7 home loss against Aliquippa in the season opener last week. The Leopards scored their lone points on an 87-yard kickoff return by Chace Petrosky. Quarterback Curty Wade went 10-of-16 for 92 yards and an interception, while he paced the Leps with 55 yards rushing. Deaubre Lightfoot caught three passes for 48 yards, and Anthony DiCenzo had three grabs for 33 yards.
About the Warriors: Central Valley came up short against host Thomas Jefferson 37-14 one week ago. Quarterback Braddock Ambrose hit on 7-of-16 attempts for 167 yards, with one TD and one pick. Aaron Lawson caught one pass for 62 yards. For the campaign, Ambrose has thrown for 247 yards and a touchdown, but he’s tossed four interceptions. The Warriors have allowed an average of 32.0 points per game. Veteran coach Mark Lyons patrols the sidelines for Central Valley.
About the Matchup: Belle Vernon Area is in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, while Central Valley resides in the Class 3A Western Hills Conference. In 2024, the Leopards edged the Warriors 23-17.
Mount Pleasant Area (1-1) at Burrell (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area could not contain Samir Crosby and Bobby Smithnosky, as the Vikings were smashed by Greensburg Central Catholic, 40-7. Brady Brooks, who rushed for 58 yards, had the only points for the Vikings, who were without top running back Stephen Predajna due to injury. Through two contests, quarterback Dane Firmstone is 8-of-22 passing for 125 yards, while he’s rushed 15 times for 82 yards. Predajna, meanwhile, racked up 80 yards on the ground in the first game of the season.
About the Buccaneers: Burrell had no answer for Shady Side Academy quarterback Javon Johnston, who propelled the Bulldogs to a convincing 56-26 victory against the Buccaneers last week. Antonio Perkins rushed 20 times for 154 yards and scored all four TDs for the Bucs, but he lost three fumbles. In two games, Perkins, a Valley transfer, has completed 6-of-8 passes for 91 yards, while he’s rushed 33 times for 219 yards. Zack Coudriet has posted nine receptions for 106 yards this season.
About the Matchup: This Class 3A Westmoreland County battle pits the Vikings, who are in the Interstate Conference, against the Buccaneers, who play in the Allegheny Seven Conference. One year ago, Mount Pleasant claimed a 23-13 victory.
Greensburg Salem (1-1) at Valley (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Golden Lions: Greensburg Salem scored twice in the opening quarter, and the defense made it stand, as the Golden Lions edged host Ligonier Valley 14-12 at Weller Field. Brody Chismar tossed two scores, completing 13-of-23 attempts for 173 yards. His TDs went to Jackson Stevey on a 33-yard strike, and Max Topper on a 29-yard completion for GS. In two contests, Chismar has completed 21-of-36 passes for 238 yards and three scores, and he’s rushed for 114 yards. Max Topper paces the Golden Lions with a pair of touchdowns.
About the Vikings: Valley was blanked by Riverview 35-0 last Saturday. The Vikings have yet to score this season, while permitting a combined 75 points.
About the Matchup: Both teams play in Class 3A, as the Golden Lions are from the Interstate Conference, while the Vikings are in the Allegheny Seven Conference. Last year, Greensburg Salem rolled to a 50-14 victory.
Laurel Highlands (2-0) at Southmoreland (2-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Mustangs: Laurel Highlands notched a 12-7 home win against Ambridge Area last Friday. Gio Guerriere posted 79 yards rushing on seven carries, while Gabriel Centofanti hit 9-of-12 throws for 104 yards, with one score and one interception. In two tilts, Guerriere has rushed for 155 yards and two scores, while Nicholas Crouch has five receptions for 109 yards. The Mustangs have permitted just seven points combined this season. Aaron Raffle, a Laurel Highlands grad, is in his first season leading the program.
About the Scotties: Dawson Wolfe threw for four touchdowns, as Southmoreland dominated host East Allegheny 49-7 last Friday. Wolfe threw for 116 yards in addition to the quartet of scores, two of which went to Makel Darnell, who also added an interception return TD for the Scotties. In two contests, Wolfe has hit 17-of-28 passes for 239 yards and six scores. Darnell, meanwhile, has caught seven passes for 112 yards, and he’s tied with Jackson Mickens for the team lead with three total touchdowns. In two contests, the Scotties have outscored their foes 89-7.
About the Matchup: While Laurel Highlands is from the Class 4A Big Six Conference, Southmoreland calls the Class 3A Interstate Conference home. Last year, the Scotties rolled to a 49-13 triumph.
Yough (2-0) at Ringgold (1-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Cougars: John Gergely scored three times as Yough exploded offensively in a 42-7 triumph against Charleroi last week. Gergely rushed 18 times for 140 yards for Yough (2-0), while Aidan Shaffer hit 5-of-7 passes for 73 yards and two scores, and he also rushed 10 times for 63 yards and another score. Ryan Sarver caught five passes for 73 yards and a pair of scores for Yough. On the season, Gergely has 251 yards on the ground, while Shaffer has thrown for 107 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 196 yards and a team-leading four touchdowns. The Cougars have averaged 31.5 points per contest.
About the Rams: Ringgold blew out Indiana Area 61-14 one week ago. Amoni Ward rushed 15 times for 162 yards and three TDs in the victory. For the year, Ward has compiled 282 yards on the ground. Quarterback Dennis Hawkins, a Monessen transfer, has thrown for 311 yards and four scores, while Demetri Lowe has snagged a dozen receptions for 206 yards. Robert Heller is in his second campaign patrolling the sidelines for Ringgold.
About the Matchup: Yough plays in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, while Ringgold is in the Class 4A Big Six. In 2024, the Rams edged the Cougars 21-19 to snap a lengthy losing streak.
Apollo-Ridge (1-1) at Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Vikings: Jeannette scored 35 unanswered points in a 35-22 victory against Apollo-Ridge at Owens Field last week. Alexander Clawson amassed 254 yards passing and accounted for a pair of TDs for the Vikings. In two games, Clawson has compiled 402 yards and two scores through the air, while rushing for 107 yards and a pair of TDs. His favorite weapon has been Jaden McCray, who has 12 receptions for 174 yards. Veteran coach John Skiba guides Apollo-Ridge.
About the Centurions: Samir Crosby and Bobby Smithnosky enjoyed stellar nights, as Greensburg Central Catholic blasted Mount Pleasant Area 40-7 last week. Crosby caught six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 102 yards and another score for the visiting Centurions. Moreover, Smithnosky went 13-of-21 passing for 215 yards and three scores for GCC, also connecting with Luke Semelka for a TD. Semelka added another score on the ground. For the year, Crosby has 206 yards rushing and 145 yards receiving, scoring four times.
About the Matchup: Apollo-Ridge plays in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, while Greensburg Central Catholic resides in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Last year’s clash was cancelled at the half due to inclement weather.
Beth-Center (0-2) at Monessen (2-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Bulldogs: Beth-Center was on the wrong side of a lopsided outcome, 58-6, at home against Leechburg Area last week.
About the Greyhounds: Monessen edged West Greene 34-18 last week, as Tavian Taylor rushed for 118 yards and scored three total touchdowns.
