Spartans seek another key win in 6A; Trojans host Leopards in Interstate clash; Burrell and Valley meet in Battle of Bypass

The WPIAL football regular season is halfway complete, and most teams already have multiple conference games under their belt. This week, the last remaining teams across the district commence the conference ledger, including Kiski Area and Yough. Highlighted by a pair of all-Westmoreland showdowns, here’s a detailed look at every matchup across the county in Week Six.

Seneca Valley (2-2, 0-2) at Hempfield Area (2-3, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Raiders: Seneca Valley was obliterated by Pittsburgh Central Catholic 62-0 last week in Class 6A action. In the defeat, Jamen Alwine hit on 6-of-14 throws for 135 yards and two interceptions. On three carries, Jameson Babcock compiled 66 yards, while Rory O’Shea led SV with two catches for 78 yards. For the year, Alwine has hit on 30-of-67 throws for 410 yards, including a pair of touchdowns, while O’Shea has hauled in 13 passes for 287 yards and three scores. Jake Donesec paces the Raiders with 129 yards rushing and four total touchdowns. In four games, the Raiders have been outscored 120-77. Former NFL player Don Barclay is at the helm of Seneca Valley.

About the Spartans: Carden Lippmann scored the winning touchdown in overtime, giving Hempfield Area a 38-34 victory against Canon-McMillan in a Class 6A showdown last week. Lippmann went 21-of-30 passing for 340 yards and three scores, and he rushed 20 times for 87 yards, including the decisive TD. Andrew Bentz caught five passes for 121 yards and two scores for the Spartans, and he also scored a rushing TD, while Lucas Simmons hauled in six passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Lippmann’s overtime heroics came after the Big Macs tied the game with 25 seconds left in regulation. For the year, Lippmann has completed 74-of-129 throws for 1,207 yards, with nine TDs and six picks, while rushing 44 times for 273 yards and three scores on the ground. Simmons has compiled 22 catches for 288 yards, while DeRon Hunter has amassed 19 grabs spanning 345 yards and four TDs. Bentz leads the Spartans with eight touchdowns.

About the Matchup: The Raiders are in last place in Class 6A, while the Spartans are in a three-way tie for third. Last season, Seneca Valley cruised to a 47-8 win.

Gateway (2-3, 0-1) at Franklin Regional (1-4, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Gators: Gateway fell at home to Armstrong 14-12 last week in a nonconference tilt. Gators QB Mayson Mitchell went 21-of-37 passing for 174 yards, with one TD and one interception, and he also led Gateway with nine carries for 59 yards. Jayden Stammer was the top receiver with eight catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Ned Reid IV caught nine passes for 73 yards. On the year, Mitchell is 85-of-151 through the air for 909 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Reid has 25 catches for 221 yards and three touchdowns, and Stammer has caught 21 passes for 269 yards. Julian Dancear has rushed 46 times for 165 yards. In each of their three losses, the Gators have scored 12 or fewer points. Veteran coach Don Holl remains at the helm of Gateway.

About the Panthers: With Jet Taylor leading the way, Franklin Regional blanked Fox Chapel Area 35-0 in Big East Conference play one week ago. The victory marked the first of the season for the Panthers, and the first for Brian Johnson as head coach. Taylor notched 163 yards and two scores on the ground for FR, while Brock Bowser scored on a rushing TD. For the year, Taylor has 56 carries for 391 yards and four TDs, while Gage Williams has amassed 59 rushes covering 289 yards, scoring a team-best five total touchdowns. In five games, the Panthers have been outpaced by a margin of 198-83.

About the Matchup: While the Gators are in pursuit of their first win in the Class 5A Big East Conference, the Panthers are tied for third. A year ago, Gateway narrowly prevailed, 33-28.

Belle Vernon Area (4-1, 1-0) at Derry Area (2-3, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Leopards: For the second week in a row, the Belle Vernon Area defense limited a prolific QB, as the Leopards blasted Greensburg Salem 49-14 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last week. BVA, which led 49-0 at halftime, received a pair of rushing TDs each from Chace Petrosky and David Bergstedt, while Petrosky also hauled in a touchdown pass from Jace Gedekoh. Halfway through the regular season, Petrosky has 62 carries for 397 yards, scoring a team-leading six times. Gedekoh, meanwhile, has hit on 43-of-63 throws for 533 yards, with six touchdowns and two interceptions, and he’s also rushed for 229 yards and four TDs. Luca Ghilani and Cameron Black are tied with 14 receptions. After allowing 34 points in the season opener, the Leopards have permitted a total of 26 points in four games.

About the Trojans: Despite another strong rushing performance from Max Doherty, Derry Area tasted defeat at Deer Lakes, 48-26, in a nonconference clash last week. Doherty amassed 191 yards and scored twice for the Trojans. With five weeks elapsed, Doherty has 85 carries for 702 yards, eight catches for 118 yards, and 11 touchdowns. QB Anthony Sacco has completed 41-of-78 passes for 442 yards, with one TD and six picks, and he’s rushed for 285 yards on 48 attempts. The Trojans are permitting 29.8 points per contest.

About the Matchup: The Leopards and Trojans have each only played once thus far in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, while the other five teams already have two conference games under their belts. The teams last met in 2007, when the Leopards rolled to a 49-6 victory.

Fox Chapel Area (1-4, 0-2) at Greater Latrobe (3-2, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Foxes: Fox Chapel Area suffered a 35-0 whitewash at the hands of Franklin Regional last Friday in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Three different players attempted a pass for the Foxes, with Gianni Fusaro completing 5-of-15 throws for 49 yards. Andrew Yanotti was the top rusher with eight carries for 48 yards. On the season, Fusari has thrown for 233 yards, and he’s added 69 carries for 216 yards and three scores as a rusher. In five tilts, the Foxes have been outscored 174-40. Coach Dave Leasure patrols the sidelines for Fox Chapel Area.

About the Wildcats: Doomed by big plays, Greater Latrobe suffered a 41-6 setback against host Woodland Hills in the Class 5A Big East Conference one week ago. Dante Durigon provided the only points for the Wildcats on a 5-yard run in the second quarter. On the campaign, AJ Yeboah leads GL with 57 carries for 441 yards, while Dante Durigon has notched 51 attempts for 255 yards and four TDs. Signal caller Dom Scarton has connected on 47-of-75 throws for 723 yards, with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. Ty Wisniewski is the top target, with 22 catches for 351 yards and four TDs. Greater Latrobe is averaging 28.2 points per game.

About the Matchup: Fox Chapel resides in last in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Greater Latrobe is tied for third. The most recent clash occurred in 2013, a 20-8 triumph for the Wildcats.

McKeesport Area (2-3, 0-0) at Kiski Area (1-4, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Tigers: McKeesport Area fell at home to Peters Township 20-10 in a nonconference showdown last week. Without Kemon Spell, the top senior running back prospect in the country, Tyshawn Robinson led the offense, rushing 16 times for 75 yards. QB Jordan Stuvaints hit on 8-of-17 throws for 67 yards, but with two interceptions, while Jermaine Callwood caught five passes for 40 yards. For the season, Spell, who was sidelined with an ankle injury, has scored 10 times. Despite a losing record, the Tigers have outscored their opponents by a margin of 142-106. Tom Smith is the first-year head coach for McKeesport.

About the Cavaliers: Staked to a 28-0 lead, Kiski Area could not close out the game, falling at home to Plum 29-28 in a nonconference thriller last week. The Mustangs scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes, and their two-point conversion run by QB John Nonnenberg with 19 seconds left was the difference. Kiski Area QB Landyn Artman went 11-of-18 passing for 169 yards, with two scores and one interception, highlighted by a 69-yard TD to Daevion McNeil. Ashton Taylor produced 32 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns for the Cavaliers. On the year, Artman has connected on 68-of-108 throws for 951 yards, with nine TDs and seven interceptions, and he’s rushed 50 times for 286 yards. McNeil has posted 18 catches for 489 yards and eight scores, while Bryce Bowman has caught 23 passes for 265 yards. Kiski Area has played in three consecutive one-score games.

About the Matchup: This serves as the lid lifter in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference. The most recent clash between the teams took place in 2019, when the Tigers notched a dominant 46-0 victory.

Valley (2-3, 0-2) at Burrell (3-2, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: Valley could not slow down Highlands in a 48-6 setback in the Class 3A Allegheny Conference last week. In the defeat, the Vikings were led by Skyler Lincoln, who went 11-of-22 passing for 140 yards and a score. For the year, Davell McWright paces the Vikings with five scores, while Shawn Wilkerson has scored three times. Valley has permitted an average of 32.6 points per game.

About the Buccaneers: Although Antonio Perkins had a strong showing, Burrell came up short against North Catholic, 32-20, in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference tilt last Friday. Perkins rushed for 168 yards, threw for 132 yards, and returned a kickoff 85 yards, factoring into all three TD for the Buccaneers. In five games, Perkins has completed 30-of-64 throws for 445 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 89 times for 673 yards and a dozen touchdowns on the ground. Trey Coury, meanwhile, has accumulated 72 carries for 394 yards and three TDs.

About the Matchup: Both teams are in pursuit of their initial win of the season in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. In 2025, the Bucs won the Battle of the Bypass, 41-21.

Elizabeth Forward (5-0, 2-0) at Greensburg Salem (0-5, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Elizabeth Forward’s potent offense and stout defense steered the Warriors to a 41-0 win against Southmoreland in a Class 3A Interstate Conference game last Friday. EF scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions, with QB Kaden Allen rushing for two scores and adding another through the air. For the season, Allen has passed for 405 yards and two scores, and he has rushed 59 times for 546 yards and nine TDs. Rocco Thompson has compiled 82 carries for 640 yards and he’s notched a total of 13 scores. In five games, EF has outscored the opposition 200-61. Coach John DeMarco oversees Elizabeth Forward.

About the Golden Lions: Greensburg Salem was overwhelmed in a 49-14 loss to Belle Vernon Area in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last week. Brody Chismar went 4-of-9 passing for 62 yards and two interceptions for GS, and Terrance Martin posted two TDs in the second half for the Golden Lions, rushing a dozen times for 92 yards. On the year, Chismar has completed 83-of-140 throws for 1,260 yards, with 11 touchdowns and four picks, and he’s added 60 carries spanning 311 yards and four scores on the ground. Aside from Chismar, nobody has topped 55 yards rushing on the campaign. Braydon Miller boasts a WPIAL-leading 36 receptions. The Golden Lions have allowed an average of 45.4 points per contest.

About the Matchup: EF is atop the standings in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, while Greensburg Salem is in last place. A year ago, the Warriors won convincingly, 49-7.

Waynesburg Central (4-1, 1-1) at Southmoreland (2-3, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Raiders: The duo of Ky-mani Sumpter and Teagan Crouse led Waynesburg Central to a lopsided 44-14 win at the expense of Mount Pleasant Area in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last Friday. Sumpter rushed for three scores, while Crouse passed for three for the Raiders. For the year, Sumpter has produced 60 carries for 525 yards, scoring 10 times. Crouse, meanwhile, has amassed 968 yards passing and 10 TDs compared to four interceptions, and he’s also compiled 33 carries for 370 yards and six touchdowns. The Raiders boast a scoring margin advantage of 182-66. Joe Kuhns serves as the head coach of Waynesburg Central.

About the Scotties: Southmoreland could not stop Elizabeth Forward’s potent offense, as the Scotties were blanked 41-0 at home in a Class 3A Interstate Conference game last week. The Scotties were shut out for the second time this season. Through five weeks, QB Dawson Wolfe has completed 27-of-58 throws for 277 yards, while he’s accumulated 84 carries for 443 yards, scoring nine times. Dylan Brown has added 46 carries for 262 yards and Reese Jordan has registered 45 carries for 210 yards. The Scotties have been outscored 150-99 on the year.

About the Matchup: The teams are in a three-way tie for third in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. The most recent head-to-head occurred in 2017, as the Raiders rolled to a 36-14 victory.

Yough (0-5, 0-0) at Avonworth (4-1, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Yough was overwhelmed in a 62-0 loss at Uniontown Area in nonconference play one week ago. Brayden Hinzy threw four touchdown passes for the Red Raiders. It was the third time the Cougars have been blanked this season. For the year, Joey Bibby and Atticus Kimmell have each scored a pair of touchdowns. In five contests, the Cougars have been outscored 237-28.

About the Antelopes: Avonworth steamrolled Beaver Area 49-6 last week in a nonconference game. Dimitri Velisaris posted a dozen carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Mason Mobley went 6-of-14 passing for 69 yards and a touchdown, and he added 49 yards and another score on the ground. The Antelopes also had a touchdown on defense (an interception return by Bryce Metz) and on special teams (a punt return by Jaden Jones). In five games, Velisaris has compiled 60 carries for 484 yards and six touchdowns. Jones paces Avonworth with 13 receptions for 221 yards, scoring five times. Mobley, meanwhile, has completed 28-of-61 passes for 372 yards, with five touchdowns and three picks, and he’s rushed for 199 yards and four TDs. The Lopes, who have won four in a row, possess a scoring differential of 180-74 on the season. Duke Johncour is the decorated head coach of Avonworth.

About the Matchup: This is the first week of play in the Class 3A Three Rivers Conference. The teams have not met since at least 2003.

Ligonier Valley (5-0, 1-0) at Brownsville Area (0-5, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley clicked on all cylinders to stay perfect with a 52-12 home win against Carlynton in a nonconference game last Friday. Signal caller Levi Foust threw for 217 yards and four scores, and he added 102 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for the Rams. Additionally, Anthony Petalino caught five passes for 128 yards and three scores against the Cougars. The win marked the 500th in LV history. For the season, Foust has hit on 25-of-47 passes for 552 yards, with nine TDs and two interceptions, and he leads LV with 71 carries for 629 yards, scoring eight times. Petalino paces the Rams with 11 receptions, while Gregory Sleasman leads the squad with 217 receiving yards. The Rams have outscored their adversaries by a margin of 229-50.

About the Falcons: Brownsville Area was overmatched in a 52-12 loss against South Allegheny last week in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. In the loss, Sy Patterson produced 14 carries for 161 yards and two TDs, and he also caught three passes spanning 47 yards. Meanwhile, Jax Patterson went 4-of-11 through the air for 58 yards and three interceptions. For the year, Sy Patterson has rushed 35 times for 280 yards and caught 13 passes for 200 yards, compiling five total touchdowns. The Falcons have scored 14 or fewer points in each of their games, and have allowed 47 or more in each contest. Cody Castor serves as the head coach for Brownsville.

About the Matchup: While the Rams have won their only Class 2A Allegheny Conference clash, the Falcons are one of three teams in the conference at 0-2. This is the first meeting since LV returned to the WPIAL in 2020.

Jeannette (4-1, 2-0) at Serra Catholic (2-3, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette used a stifling defense to edge Riverview 14-7 in a low-scoring affair in the Class 1A Eastern Conference last week. After the Raiders opened the scoring in the first quarter, Hunter Schaeffer returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a score. Jayce Powell notched the decisive score on a run for the Jayhawks, as he caught five passes for 33 yards, rushed 11 times for 62 yards, and completed two passes for 15 yards. Anthony Stuchell threw for 84 yards for the host Jayhawks. On the year, Powell has caught 20 passes for 267 yards, rushed 20 times for 180 yards, and scored eight total touchdowns. Dhestin Sanders has added 16 catches for 139 yards and 23 carries for 125 yards. Stuchell has completed 43-of-72 throws for 713 yards, with eight TDs and two picks. During their four-game winning streak, the Jayhawks have allowed a total of 21 points.

About the Eagles: Serra Catholic edged host Leechburg 28-20 last week in a Class 1A Eastern Conference battle. Cordarrell Rogers led the way for the Eagles, scoring three TDs three different ways – receiving, rushing, and via fumble recovery. Shane Andiorio also found paydirt for Serra Catholic on an 11-yard run. In their three losses, the Eagles scored a combined 30 points, but they produced a total of 82 points in two victories. Coach Akeeme Robinson patrols the sidelines for Serra.

About the Matchup: Jeannette is the lone team with a mark of 2-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while the Eagles are tied for fourth place. The previous meeting was in 2015, as the Jayhawks dominated, 42-7.

Leechburg Area (0-5, 0-2) at Greensburg Central Catholic (4-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Blue Devils: Leechburg Area came up short against Serra Catholic 28-20 last week in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. In the setback, Blue Devils QB Jaxon Vargo was 7-of-13 passing for 128 yards, with two TDs and two interceptions. His top receiver was Dylan Whitlinger, who caught four passes for 95 yards and a score. Nick Hilty and Kaedyn Joris also found the end zone for Leechburg. On the season, Vargo has thrown for 666 yards, with six touchdowns and six interceptions, while also rushing for 188 yards and two TDs. Whitlinger has caught 22 passes covering 404 yards, and he’s scored three times. The Blue Devils are averaging 12.4 points per game. Randy Walters remains as the head coach of Leechburg.

About the Centurions: Greensburg Central Catholic jumped out to a 42-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, thrashing Springdale 56-7 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference last Friday. Blase Bugosh led the way for GCC, scoring four touchdowns in the first half of the game. Colin Snively, Tommy Dlugos, Carson Kramer, and Alex Snively also scored. Halfway through the regular season, Bugosh has 55 carries for 598 yards, scoring 16 times, which is tied for second most in the WPIAL. Kramer has connected on 21-of-37 throws for 334 yards, with four TDs and two picks. Lucca Denis is the top receiver with nine catches for 180 yards. The Centurions have outpaced their foes 172-57, and have allowed a total of 15 points in their four wins.

About the Matchup: Leechburg is tied for last place in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while GCC is tied for second. A year ago, the Centurions notched a convincing 36-7 victory in the regular-season finale.

Monessen (4-1, 1-1) at Brentwood (1-4, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Greyhounds: Monessen led until the final minute, but fell in heartbreaking fashion 10-6 to Burgettstown in Class 1A Black Hills Conference play last week. Blake Neal scored the winning 1-yard TD for the Blue Devils with 28 seconds left. Lamont Cullen caught a 20-yard touchdown pass for the Greyhounds.

About the Spartans: Brentwood suffered a deflating 20-17 overtime loss at Bentworth last week in the Class 1A Black Hills Conference ledger. Nicky Wardzinski posted 15 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown, while Gavin Lewis added a dozen carries for 50 yards. On the year, Lewis has 60 carries for 323 yards and three TDs, while Wardzinski has compiled 56 carries and 322 yards, along with two touchdowns. QB Thatcher Eriole has passed for 409 yards.

Norwin (3-2) at North Hills (4-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Knights: With Giovanni Rothrauff propelling the offense and the defense not permitting a touchdown, Norwin bested Mount Lebanon 22-3 in a Class 6A clash at Penn-Trafford High School one week ago. Rothrauff compiled 30 carries for 175 yards, scoring twice for the homestanding Knights. Moreover, Max Ritz hit on 12-of-21 throws for 82 yards, including a 9-yard TD to Maddox Pivarnik, as well as an interception. On the year, Rothrauff has rushed 153 times for 777 yards, scoring eight times. Potter Brozeski has caught 28 passes for 429 yards, notching five total touchdowns. Ritz has hit on 59-of-114 attempts for 677 yards, with seven TDs and two picks. On the year, Norwin has narrowly outscored its opponents, 138-123.

About the Indians: North Hills smashed homestanding Penn Hills 43-9 last week in a Class 5A Northeast Conference contest. Nicco Thomas rushed 15 times for 93 yards and three TDs for North Hills. Quarterback Bo Wilcox was efficient, hitting 6-of-10 throws for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jack Broderick caught four passes for 135 yards and two scores. In four games, Thomas has 52 carries for 309 yards and six TDs. Broderick leads the Indians with 22 catches for 285 yards, while Wilcox has passed for 498 yards and three scores. The Indians have allowed just 18 total points on the season. Decorated head coach Eric Kasperowicz is in his first season guiding his alma mater.

About the Matchup: This is a nonconference clash, as Norwin plays in Class 6A, while North Hills resides in the Class 5A Northeast Conference. The teams also met last year, as the Knights won 21-17. North Hills plays its home games at Martorelli Stadium in West View.

Penn Hills (1-4) at Penn-Trafford (5-0) – 7:30 p.m.

About the Indians: Penn Hills was overwhelmed last week in a 43-9 setback against North Hills in a Class 5A Northeast Conference tilt. Dorian Peay notched 11 carries for 59 yards and the lone TD for Penn Hills. Jaysen Booker, meanwhile, went 5-of-17 passing for 54 yards and one interception, and Zyair Clay caught two passes covering 50 yards. For the year, Peay has 65 carries for 391 yards. Booker has completed 39-of-85 throws for 581 yards, with four TDs and four interceptions. Richard Littlejohn has registered 15 receptions for 314 yards, scoring four times. The Indians have been outscored by a margin of 175-96. Dan Mason, a former Indians star, is serving as the interim head coach of Penn Hills.

About the Warriors: For the second week in a row, Penn-Trafford dismantled its opponent, as the undefeated Warriors whitewashed homestanding Connellsville Area 64-0 in a Class 5A Big East Conference game last Friday. Ben Grabowski had a TD pass and a TD run for the Warriors, while Nick Ponko hauled in a touchdown pass and also returned a punt 57 yards for a score. Jordan Earhart also threw and ran for a touchdown for the Warriors against the Falcons. In five games, Grabowski has completed 35-of-57 throws for 631 yards and eight touchdowns, and he’s posted 55 carries for 401 yards and four scores. Ponko has snagged 19 receptions for 306 yards and has a team-high 10 total TDs. PT is averaging 47.2 points per game, and has outpaced its foes by a total of 236-43.

About the Matchup: This is a Class 5A nonconference affair, as the Indians are in the Northeast Conference, while the Warriors play in the Big East Conference. The previous meeting took place in the WPIAL Class 5A first round in 2023, when Penn Hills dominated, 63-28.

Freeport Area (4-1) at Mount Pleasant Area (3-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Yellowjackets: Freeport Area blanked Knoch 27-0 in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference tussle last Friday. Danny King went 7-of-14 for 78 yards and two scores, and he rushed 15 times for 92 yards. Luke Selinger caught two passes for 44 yards and a score, and he added a 25-yard fumble recovery touchdown. For the year, King has connected on 34-of-87 passes for 652 yards, with 10 TDs and four interceptions. The Yellowjackets, who have posted a pair of shutouts, have outpaced their adversaries 157-79. John Gaillot is the veteran head coach of Freeport.

About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area could not slow the duo of Ky-mani Sumpter and Teagan Crouse, who led Waynesburg Central to a convincing 44-14 win in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last week.
