The first week of conference play in the WPIAL is in the rear view, and several more teams will commence the conference ledger this week, including four from Westmoreland County. Here’s a closer look at all of the games involving Westmoreland County squads in Week Five.

Canon-McMillan (2-2, 1-0) at Hempfield Area (1-3, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Big Macs: Canon-McMillan smashed Seneca Valley 38-8 in a Class 6A battle last week. In the win, Bryce Collins rushed 27 times for 145 yards, scoring four times. QB Ty Jansma hit on 12-of-18 throws for 220 yards and a score, while Ohio State University pledge Luke Sohyda caught five passes for 91 yards. On the year, Jansma has completed 57-of-111 throws for 920 yards, including five TDs and three interceptions. The Big Macs have outpaced their foes by a margin of 91-61 on the year. After a year sabbatical, Mike Evans is back leading Canon-McMillan.

About the Spartans: A touchdown in the final minute proved decisive, as Hempfield Area sustained a 14-7 loss at North Allegheny in a Class 6A clash last Friday. Andrew Bentz hauled in three passes for 70 yards, and he also rushed for 30 yards and the lone score for the Spartans in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Carden Lippmann went 13-of-28 through the air for 219 yards but with two interceptions. Through four games, Lippmann has completed 53-of-101 throws for 866 yards, with six touchdowns and six picks, and he’s also rushed for a team-leading 162 yards on 29 carries. Lucas Simmons has posted 16 receptions for 209 yards, while DeRon Hunter has amassed 14 grabs for 331 yards, scoring four times. Andrew Bentz leads Hempfield Area with five touchdowns.

The Blue Devils have been outscored by a margin of 92-6. Bruce Fronk is in his first season guiding Mt. Lebanon.

About the Knights: Norwin was unable to contain the explosive offense of Pittsburgh Central Catholic, as the host Vikings rolled 54-17 in the Class 6A opener last week. Max Ritz threw for 195 yards in the setback for the Knights, while Potter Brozeski and Garrett Natale found paydirt. On the year, Giovanni Rothrauff has registered 122 carries for 597 yards, scoring a team-leading six touchdowns. Brozeski has caught 23 passes for 384 yards, notching five scores. Ritz has connected on 47-of-92 throws for 586 yards, with six touchdowns and one pick. The Knights are averaging 29.0 points per game on offense, but permitting 30.0 points per contest on the other side.

About the Raiders: Riverview smashed Leechburg 44-7 last week in a Class 1A Big East Conference tilt. The Raiders did nearly all of their damage on the ground, as Kaden Levy had 10 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns, Lukas Duncan posted 10 rushes for 114 yards and a score, and Miles Duncan accumulated 89 yards and a pair of TDs on nine carries. Miles Duncan also hauled in a 42-yard TD reception from Connor Kmetz. On the campaign, Lukas Duncan has racked up 313 yards rushing and four scores, Levy has 260 yards on the ground and three TDs, and Miles Duncan has 223 yards rushing and five scores. Defensively, the Raiders are permitting 34.3 points per tilt. Riverview is under the tutelage of first-year head coach Mark Jones.

About the Jayhawks: Anthony Stuchell factored into touchdowns three different ways in leading Jeannette to a lopsided 42-0 victory against Springdale in the Class 1A Eastern Conference lid lifter last Friday. Stuchell passed for a score, rushed for a TD, and also had an interception return score for the host Jayhawks. The Jayhawks defense, meanwhile, blanked the Dynamos, the second shutout of the season for Jeannette. For the year, Stuchell has hit on 33-of-57 throws for 629 yards, with eight TDs. Jayce Powell has snagged 15 receptions for 254 yards, and also has rushed for 118 yards, scoring seven total touchdowns. Hunter Schaffer has added 210 yards receiving and four TDs.

About the Matchup: This serves as Jeannette’s first game in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Last year, the Jayhawks blanked the Raiders 36-0.

Derry Area (2-2) at Deer Lakes (1-3) – 7:30 p.m.

About the Trojans: Derry Area was burned by Mount Pleasant Area’s passing game, as the homestanding Vikings captured a 31-20 win against the Trojans in the Class 3A Interstate Conference matchup last week. In the setback, Max Doherty rushed for 113 yards and a pair of TDs for the Trojans, while Anthony Sacco went 9-of-21 passing for 78 yards and a score. On the season, Doherty paces the Trojans with nine TDs, while nobody else has more than two scores. The Trojans have been narrowly outscored, 101-100, for the year.

About the Lancers: Deer Lakes claimed its first win in emphatic fashion last week, as Valley had no answer for Roman Smith, who carried the Lancers to a 50-13 win against the Vikings in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference battle. Smith posted 15 carries for 156 yards and five TDs for the Lancers. Through four weeks, Smith has amassed 64 carries for 393 yards, scoring six times. He’s tied for the team lead in TDs with Evan Moore, who has caught 16 passes spanning 302 yards. Quarterback Dante Mangieri has hit on 45-of-84 throws for 729 yards, with eight scores and five interceptions. The Lancers are permitting 32.3 points per game. Coach Tim Burk patrols the sidelines for Deer Lakes.

About the Matchup: This is a Class 3A nonconference clash, as Derry Area is in the Interstate Conference, while Deer Lakes resides in the Allegheny Seven Conference. Last year, the Trojans prevailed 24-21.

Greater Latrobe (3-1, 1-0) at Woodland Hills (1-3, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: Greater Latrobe claimed a key win in the Class 5A Big East Conference last week, knocking off homestanding Gateway 24-7. AJ Yeboah compiled 84 yards rushing and a score for the Wildcats, while Dom Scarton threw for 74 yards and a score to Connor Donahue. Drew Blossey also found paydirt for GL. On the campaign, Yeboah has produced 51 carries for 431 yards. Ty Wisniewski has caught 16 passes for 304 yards and a team-best four touchdowns. Signal caller Dom Scarton has completed 33-of-55 throws for 635 yards, with 10 touchdowns and just one interception. The Cats have outpaced their foes by a margin of 135-66.

About the Wolverines: Woodland Hills smashed Fox Chapel Area 42-3 last week in Class 5A Big East Conference play. Jaron McKinney Jr hit on 13-of-19 attempts for 243 yards and three scores. Meanwhile, Elijah McGuire rushed nine times for 21 yards and two scores, while he caught two passes for 75 yards and another TD. Niko Major amassed 69 yards on the ground and a score, and he also produced three catches for 22 yards and another touchdown. In four games, McKinney has connected on 49-of-85 throws for 838 yards, with a dozen touchdowns and three interceptions. His favorite target is Malik McCloud, who has 19 receptions covering 325 yards. Jordan Austin leads the Wolverines with five touchdowns. Two wins earlier this season were ruled forfeit losses earlier this week as the Wolverines reportedly used an ineligible player. Head coach Brian Tarrant was suspended for one year earlier this season, so Maurice Walker and Steve Meyer are leading the offense and defense, respectively.

About the Matchup: The Wildcats and Wolverines, along with Penn-Trafford, are all atop the Big East Conference standings after one week. Last year, Woodland Hills triumphed 33-9.

Penn-Trafford (4-0, 1-0) at Connellsville Area (3-1, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Penn-Trafford was dominant in all phases in a 68-0 triumph at home against Franklin Regional in the Class 5A Big East Conference opener. Ben Grabowski, playing at QB, went 10-of-12 passing for 221 yards, with four TDs and one interception for the Warriors. Nick Ponko contributed five receptions for 110 yards and two TDs, and he added a pick-six in the blowout. Landyn Stikkel contributed a fumble recovery score for PT. For the year, Grabowski has connected on 29-of-45 throws for 529 yards, with seven touchdowns and one interception, and he’s rushed 49 times for 360 yards. Ponko has hauled in 18 passes for 279 yards, and he’s scored eight total touchdowns. PT boasts a scoring advantage of 172-43.

About the Falcons: Connellsville Area outlasted Uniontown Area 25-13 one week ago. Linkon Keller rushed 20 times for 114 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons, while Jeffrey Nicholson hit on 15-of-26 passing attempts for 162 yards, with a TD and a pair of interceptions. On the season, Keller leads Connellsville with 45 carries for 272 yards, a dozen receptions for 294 yards, and eight touchdowns. Nicholson, who took over at QB due to injury in the season opener, has completed 34-of-58 throws for 636 yards, with eight touchdowns and three picks. Jace McClean is at the helm of Connellsville Area.

About the Matchup: The Warriors and Falcons last met in 2021, as PT drubbed Connellsville 45-6.

Fox Chapel Area (1-3, 0-1) at Franklin Regional (0-4, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Foxes: Fox Chapel Area was outmatched in a 42-3 loss against Woodland Hills last week in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Andrew Yannotti led the Foxes with six carries for 36 yards. On the season, quarterback Gianni Fusaro has thrown for 184 yards and rushed for a team-best 196 yards, scoring three times on the ground. Charles Portis is his top receiver, with 10 catches. Fox Chapel has scored 13 points combined over the past three weeks. Dave Leasure remains as the head coach for the Foxes.

About the Panthers: Frankin Regional was overwhelmed by Penn-Trafford in all phases in a 68-0 shutout in the Class 5A Big East Conference opener one week ago. Jaydin Brooks led the Panthers with 52 yards on 18 carries. Through four contests, Gage Williams leads FR with 51 carries for 248 yards and four TDs, while Jet Taylor has added 32 rushes spanning 228 yards and two scores. The Panthers are averaging just 12.0 points per game, and allowing 49.5 points.

About the Matchup: Both teams are in search of their first win in the Class 5A Big East Conference. A year ago, the Panthers won their only game of the season at the expense of the Foxes, 21-10, in a nonconference clash.

Greensburg Salem (0-4, 0-1) at Belle Vernon Area (3-1, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: Despite another prolific performance on offense, Greensburg Salem came up short in a 42-34 home setback to Southmoreland in the Class 3A Interstate Conference opener last week. Brody Chismar had another robust effort for Greensburg Salem, as he hit 27-of-40 passes for 371 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for 79 yards and another touchdown. Brandt Sandstrom hauled in eight receptions spanning 131 yards and a score, Braydon Miller posted eight catches for 97 yards and a TD, and Chris Berger caught seven passes for 87 yards. On the year, Chismar leads the WPIAL with 1,207 passing yards, completing 79-of-131 throws, with 11 touchdowns and two picks, and he’s also accumulated 54 carries for 313 yards and four scores on the ground. Miller paces GS with 32 catches for 433 yards, scoring five times, while Sandstrom, Berger, and Jackson Stevey each have a dozen receptions.

About the Leopards: Led by a stellar defense, Belle Vernon Area whitewashed Burrell 35-0 in a nonconference affair last week. The host Leopards limited the Buccaneers to 68 yards on the ground. Jace Gedekoh tossed a pair of scores, and also rushed for a TD, while Luca Ghilani caught five passes for 70 yards, including both of those touchdown passes, and added a fumble recovery score. In four contests, Chace Petrosky has 54 carries for 319 yards, while Ghilani has hauled in 14 catches for 239 yards, scoring four times. Gedekoh, meanwhile, has thrown for 411 yards, with five TDs and two picks, and he’s added 211 yards on the ground and found the end zone four times. BVA is permitting just 11.5 points per game.

About the Matchup: This serves as the initial game of the season in the Class 3A Interstate Conference for the Leopards. The squads last did battle in 2023, when BVA prevailed 53-7.

Elizabeth Forward (4-0, 1-0) at Southmoreland (2-2, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: A week ago, Elizabeth Forward edged Waynesburg Central 38-33 in a Class 3A Interstate Conference clash. Rocco Thompson compiled 21 carries for 187 yards and three scores, while Kaden Allen contributed a dozen rushes for 79 yards and two TDs. On the year, Thompson has 76 carries for 573 yards and a dozen touchdowns, while Allen has added 50 rushes spanning 343 yards and seven TDs, while he’s also thrown for 293 yards. EF has notched a pair of victories by a combined margin of 87-0, but the Warriors have won their other two games by a total of 11 points. Coach John DeMarco leads EF.

About the Scotties: Keyed by 28 straight points, Southmoreland outlasted host Greensburg Salem 42-34 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference opener last Friday. Dawson Wolfe registered 147 yards on the ground and four scores for the Scotties, and he also passed for 107 yards. Additionally, Dylan Brown compiled 106 yards and a TD on the ground, while Brock Geho caught five passes for 85 yards. On the year, Wolfe has thrown for 268 yards, but he’s amassed 73 carries for 429 yards and nine scores on the ground. Brown has added 39 carries for 260 yards. After being shut out in Week Two, the Scotties have scored 42 points in each of the past two weeks.

About the Matchup: Both teams won their opener in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last week, joining Mount Pleasant Area atop the standings. In 2025, Elizabeth Forward handed Southmoreland its only loss of the regular season, 42-0.

Waynesburg Central (3-1, 0-1) at Mount Pleasant Area (3-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Raiders: Waynesburg Central came up just shy against host Elizabeth Forward 38-33 last week. Ky-mani Sumpter amassed 24 carries for 248 yards and two scores, and he caught three passes for 42 yards and a touchdown, while QB Teagan Crouse hit on 10-of-18 throws for 119 yards and a touchdown, while rushing eight times for 109 yards and another score on the ground. For the season, Sumpter has posted 53 carries for 444 yards, scoring seven total touchdowns. Crouse has completed 39-of-58 throws for 708 yards, with seven scores and three picks, and he has accumulated 32 carries for 372 yards and six scores on the ground. The Raiders hold a scoring advantage of 138-52 on the year. Joe Kuhns is the head coach of Waynesburg Central.

About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area’s passing game came to life, helping the homestanding Vikings capture a 31-20 win against Derry Area in the Class 3A Interstate Conference matchup last week. QB Bobby Smithnosky went 10-of-14 passing for 179 yards and two scores for the Vikings, while Lukas Gonzales caught four passes for 93 yards and a score, and Noah DeWitt hauled in five passes for 70 yards and a TD. For the season, Tristan Wtorkiewicz leads the Vikes with 27 carries for 207 yards, scoring seven times. Meanwhile, Kaden Hudec, Nick Morrell, Smithnosky, and Derrick Smith each have produced 15 or more rushing attempts.

About the Matchup: The teams last battled in 2017, when the Vikings steamrolled the Raiders 55-13.

North Catholic (1-3, 1-0) at Burrell (3-1, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Trojans: North Catholic bested Freeport Area 42-28 last week. William Toprani went 15-of-27 through the air for 232 yards, with four scores and one interception. His favorite target, Will Waskiewicz, caught four passes for 93 yards and three scores, and he also rushed four times for 42 yards and another TD. Nate Swisher contributed 17 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown. On the year, Troprani has connected on 51-of-87 throws for 805 yards, with nine scores and seven picks. Waskiewicz has achieved 19 catches for 412 yards and nine total touchdowns. Coach Chris Rizzo is at the helm of North Catholic.

About the Buccaneers: Burrell could not crack the Belle Vernon Area defense, as the Bucs were whitewashed 35-0 in a nonconference affair last week. Antonio Perkins left the game with injury in the third quarter for the Buccaneers. On the year, Perkins has thrown for 313 yards and two scores, while he’s racked up 65 carries for 505 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Trey Coury, meanwhile, has registered 55 carries for 357 yards and three scores. Despite a winning record, Burrell has been outpaced 107-101.

About the Matchup: This serves as the opener for Burrell in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. Last year, the teams met in the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs, with the Trojans notching a 56-21 win in the first round.

Valley (2-2, 0-1) at Highlands (3-1, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: Valley had no answer for Roman Smith, who carried Deer Lakes to a 50-13 win against the Vikings in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference battle one week ago. Sean Wilkerson amassed 141 yards rushing for the Vikings, while Devell McWright returned an interception for a touchdown. For the year, McWright leads the team with four scores, while Wilkerson has found paydirt three times.

About the Golden Rams: Led by Trevin Owen-Cratsenberg, Highlands doubled up Knoch 28-14 last week. Owen-Cratsenberg rushed 31 times for 303 yards and four touchdowns. For the year, he has 107 carries for a WPIAL-leading 1,041 yards, notching 14 total TDs.

Greensburg Central Catholic (3-1, 0-0) at Springdale (1-2, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Centurions: Blase Bugosh was the offensive catalyst, and the defense was stout in Greensburg Central Catholic’s 28-0 triumph against Bentworth in a nonconference game one week ago. Bugosh found the end zone twice for the homestanding Centurions, while Luke Semelka and Tommy Ames also scored. Meanwhile, the GCC defense blanked the Bearcats. For the year, Bugosh has 49 rushing attempts totaling 478 yards, and he’s found the end zone 10 times. GCC has outscored the competition 116-50 this season.

About the Dynamos: Springdale could not penetrate the Jeannette defense in a 42-0 shutout loss to the Jayhawks in the Class 1A Eastern Conference last Friday. The Dynamos won their first game of the season, but have been whitewashed in two consecutive games, while allowing a combined 84 points in those two losses. Coach Chad Walsh patrols the sidelines for Springdale.

About the Matchup: After playing nonconference last week, Greensburg Central Catholic commences its Class 1A Eastern Conference slate. In 2025, the Centurions reigned supreme, 52-14.

Burgettstown (4-0, 1-0) at Monessen (4-0, 1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Blue Devils: Burgettstown blanked Sto-Rox 28-0 last week in Class 1A Black Hills Conference action, the third consecutive shutout for the Blue Devils. In four contests, Brady Richtweiser has registered 51 carries for 404 yards and has scored seven times.

About the Greyhounds: Bolstered by four takeaways, Monessen edged Fort Cherry 14-12 in a marquee matchup in the Class 1A Black Hills Conference. Jay’veyon Jeffries notched both scores for the Greyhounds.

Plum (4-0) at Kiski Area (1-3) – 7 p.m.

About the Mustangs: Plum rolled past Shaler Area 42-6 last Friday. Mustangs QB John Nonnenberg went 13-of-18 passing for 252 yards and two scores, while Semaj Robinson caught four passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Jake Ligo added two rushing scores for the Mustangs. Plum has scored 42 or more points in each game. Veteran Matt Morgan continues to serve as the head coach of Plum.

About the Cavaliers: Ashton Taylor’s touchdown run proved the difference in overtime, as Kiski Area edged Ringgold 21-14 in a nonconference showdown. Landyn Artman was a dual-threat for the Cavaliers, as he threw for 105 yards and a TD, and he added 103 yards and another score on the ground. For the year, Artman has connected on 57-of-90 throws for 782 yards, with seven touchdowns and six scores, while also rushing for 199 yards. Taylor paces the ground game with 71 carries for 317 yards. Daivion McNeil leads KA with seven scores.

About the Matchup: While the Mustangs play in the Class 5A Northeast Conference, the Cavaliers reside in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference. Last year, Plum triumphed 29-12.

Yough (0-4) at Uniontown Area (2-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Despite a big effort from Joe Bibby, Yough sustained a 42-11 loss against Albert Gallatin in a nonconference clash. Bibby hauled in nine passes for 158 yards and a score for the Cougars. For the season, Bibby has accumulated 16 catches for 240 yards. Atticus Kimmell has contributed 26 carries for 107 yards. For the year, the Cougars have been outscored by a margin of 175-28.

About the Red Raiders: Uniontown Area fell 25-13 at Connellsville Area one week ago. In defeat, quarterback Brayden Hinzy went 11-of-29 for 182 yards, with two TDs and two interceptions. Marcus Evans led the Red Raiders with four catches for 92 yards and a TD. For the campaign, Hinzy has completed 40-of-81 throws for 743 yards, with nine TDs and three picks. Evans has produced 18 receptions for 509 yards and seven scores. Tim Bukowski oversees the Uniontown Area program.

About the Matchup: While Yough plays in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, Uniontown is in the Class 4A Big Six Conference. The most recent meeting occurred in 2019, as Yough won 25-0.

Carlynton (2-2) at Ligonier Valley (4-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Carlynton was smacked by Bishop Canevin 49-0 last week. Justin Berger led the Cougars with nine carries for 40 yards. On the year, Berger has registered 35 carries for 288 yards. Quarterback Maddox Horrell has hit on 35-of-75 throws for 469 yards, with six scores and four picks. Carlynton has been outpaced by a margin of 128-95. John Tortorea serves as the head coach for Carlynton.

About the Rams: Levi Foust proved dynamic once again, as Ligonier Valley stayed perfect in a 56-20 triumph against Charleroi in the initial Class 2A Allegheny Conference battle. Foust rushed for 152 yards and two scores, and he added 99 yards and two more TDs through the air for the Rams. Gregory Sleasman caught two touchdown passes and also scored twice on the ground for LV. For the season, Foust has gone 15-of-33 passing for 335 yards, with five TDs and two picks, while rushing 64 times for 527 yards and six touchdowns. Additionally, Blake Hitt has notched 39 carries for 360 yards, scoring four times. LV boasts a scoring advantage of 177-38.

About the Matchup: This is a Class 2A nonconference affair, as the Cougars are in the Century Conference, while the Rams play in the Allegheny Conference. The teams have not met since Ligonier Valley’s return to the WPIAL.
