As the high school football season continues into the third week, just five Westmoreland County teams remain perfect. That quintet features some surprises, as Penn-Trafford’s hot start is par for the course for the Warriors and Mount Pleasant Area has enjoyed some strong seasons in recent years, but Burrell, Ligonier Valley, and Monessen were not nearly as heralded entering the season. Conversely, six teams from Westmoreland are still in search of their first win, including Southmoreland, which won nine times a year ago. As the nonconference matchups continue, here’s a closer examination of all of the games featuring county teams in Week Three.

Franklin Regional (0-2) at Norwin (1-1) at Penn-Trafford High School – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: Franklin Regional could not slow an explosive passing attack in a 42-20 home setback against Plum one week ago. Gage Williams compiled seven carries for 118 yards and two scores, while Jet Taylor notched the other rushing touchdown for FR. Replacing Brock Bowser, who left with injury, Dominick Devola threw for 55 yards and rushed for 57 for the Panthers. Through two games, Williams has rushed for 179 yards and has scored four times.

About the Knights: Behind a workhorse effort from Giovanni Rothrauff, Norwin edged Greater Latrobe 38-28 last Friday. The senior running back rushed 44 times for 218 yards, scoring twice for the Knights. Norwin QB Max Ritz threw for 124 yards and a score, while he posted 127 yards and two TDs on the ground. This season, Rothrauff has rushed 72 times for 302 yards, scoring four times. Potter Brozeski leads Norwin with 10 receptions spanning 143 yards, while Ritz has accumulated 256 yards passing on 27-of-42 attempts, with one TD and one interception, while adding 157 yards and a score on the ground.

About the Matchup: Franklin Regional plays in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Norwin competes in Class 6A. In the most recent clash, the Panthers prevailed 37-29 in a conference game.

Trinity (2-0) at Hempfield Area (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Hillers: Trinity edged Canon-McMillan 29-24 last Friday. A pair of Hillers rushed for 100 or more yards, as Owen Gardner went for 121 yards and two scores on a dozen carries, while Daniel Glass had seven attempts for 100 yards and a TD. QB Owen Samogala hit on 8-of-12 throws for 158 yards, and he rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown. On the campaign, Gardner paces Trinity with 27 carries for 225 yards, while Chase Kostelnik has five catches for 126 yards. Samogala has connected on 14-of-21 throws for 284 yards, with two TDs and an interception, and he’s also rushed for 123 yards and a team-leading three touchdowns. Dan Knause is at the helm of the Hillers.

About the Spartans: Hempfield Area trailed from the first play of the game in a 51-29 setback to Penn-Trafford in a rare Saturday contest. In the defeat for the Spartans, Carden Lippmann went 21-of-43 for 313 yards, tossing a couple of scores and two picks. Lucas Simmons caught eight passes for 127 yards, and Andrew Bentz had two rushing scores for Hempfield. Through two contests, Lippmann has connected on 29-of-53 throws for 455 yards, with three TDs and three picks. Simmons leads the team with nine grabs, while Deron Hunter paces the Spartans with 154 yards receiving, and his two TDs match Bentz for the team lead.

About the Matchup: While Trinity plays in the Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference, the Spartans compete in Class 6A. The teams have not played since prior to 2003.

Penn-Trafford (2-0) at Moon Area (0-1) at Robert Morris University – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Penn-Trafford set the tone early, and an explosive offense carried the Warriors to a 51-29 triumph at Hempfield Area in a rare Saturday high school football contest. Kason Offield returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a score for PT, while Nick Ponko posted six receptions for 83 yards, including four TD catches. Moreover, Ben Grabowski threw for 105 yards and two scores, while adding 125 yards on the ground, and Cody Yacamelli had 78 yards rushing and two scores, and he also had a TD pass. To this point, Yacamelli leads PT with 33 carries for 201 yards, while Ponko has 10 grabs covering 141 yards and a team-best five scores. Grabowski has hit on 11-of-17 throws for 206 yards and three TDs, and he’s rushed 22 times for 149 yards.

About the Tigers: Moon Area did not play last week, as the Tigers’ Thursday tilt at Bethel Park was postponed due to weather. In their season opener, the Tigers fell 28-25 at Montour. Dionte Henry completed 7-of-14 throws for 70 yards and three interceptions, while he rushed 15 times for 62 yards and a score. Meanwhile, Richard McMullen went 4-of-8 through the air for 121 yards and a touchdown. Savario Vandetti paced the Moon receivers with two grabs for 83 yards and a TD. Veteran coach Ryan Linn continues to patrol the sidelines for Moon Area.

About the Matchup: This is a crucial Class 5A nonconference battle, as the Warriors play in the Big East, while the Tigers call the Northeast home. The teams met twice in 2025, as PT claimed a 25-24 win during the regular season, but the Tigers gained vengeance with a 20-13 win in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals.

East Allegheny 2-0) at Derry Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: East Allegheny blew out Mapletown 42-6 last Friday. For the host Wildcats, Jelani Hunte had a big performance, rushing 12 times for 138 yards and two scores. Signal caller Rajab Oakes was efficient, completing four passes for 78 yards and two scores, while Tanner Loya caught both of those scores, spanning 57 yards on his two receptions. The Wildcats have permitted just 20 total points through two weeks. Frank Cortazzo is at the helm of EA.

About the Trojans: Max Doherty led the way for Derry Area in a 29-25 comeback victory against Laurel Highlands last week. The senior running back compiled 21 carries for 218 yards and three scores, including the go-ahead TD with less than four minutes remaining. Cael Brown added 82 yards rushing for the Trojans, while Anthony Sacco also found paydirt on the ground. In two games, Doherty has registered 41 carries for 308 yards, scoring five touchdowns. Sacco, meanwhile, has hit on 16-of-30 throws for 198 yards, and he’s compiled 129 yards on the ground on 21 carries.

About the Matchup: After dropping down with realignment, East Allegheny resides in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, while Derry Area is in the 3A Interstate Conference. The most recent meeting, in 2021, was a 68-0 lambasting in favor of the Wildcats.

Indiana Area (1-1) at Greater Latrobe (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Little Indians: Boosted by a prolific rushing effort, Indiana Area bested Greensburg Salem 42-27 last week. The Little Indians were paced by Charles Spells, who notched 320 yards and five touchdowns. Jace Brocious also found paydirt, accumulating seven carries for 65 yards, while QB Jason Stack hit on 5-of-10 throws for 77 yards, and also rushed 20 times for 74 yards. Prior to their 42-point outburst last week, Indiana was shutout in the opening week. Mark Zilinskas is at the helm of Indiana Area.

About the Wildcats: Unable to contain Norwin’s Giovanni Rothrauff, Greater Latrobe dropped a 38-28 outcome at home last week. In the setback for the Wildcats, Dom Scarton went 9-of-19 for 298 yards and four touchdowns, while Ty Wisniewski caught four passes spanning 151 yards and two scores, and Eli Meeder registered four receptions for 135 yards and a TD. On the year, Scarton has completed 19-of-31 throws for 461 yards and six TDs. Wisniewski boasts eight grabs for 221 yards and a team-high three scores, while AJ Yeboah has 23 carries for 290 yards. Greater Latrobe is averaging 33.0 points per game.

About the Matchup: While the Little Indians play in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference, the Wildcats are in the 5A Big East Conference. The last meeting occurred in 2005, a 24-6 Greater Latrobe triumph.

Kiski Area (0-2) at Armstrong (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area could not contain Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg, who led Highlands to a 45-22 win against the Cavaliers last week. Despite missing the first half, Landyn Artman hit on 12-of-18 throws for 241 yards and three TDs for the Cavaliers, while Daevion McNeil caught five passes for 197 yards. Thus far, Artman has completed 25-of-38 throws for 357 yards, with three TDs and four interceptions, while Ashten Taylor has amassed 31 carries for 136 yards.

About the River Hawks: Armstrong edged Hampton 27-20 last Friday. Quarterback Jaydon Oliver went 17-of-25 for 265 yards, with one score and one interception, and he added 15 rushes for 52 yards and another TD on the ground. His top target was Theron Cupec, who caught eight passes covering 117 yards and a touchdown, while Kaleb Kinzey rushed for two TDs. Through two games, Oliver has thrown for 524 yards and rushed for 130, while Quinn Olsen leads Armstrong with 17 receptions for 181 yards. Veteran head coach Frank Fabian oversees Armstrong.

About the Matchup: While Kiski Area plays in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference, Armstrong resides in the Class 5A Northeast Conference. Last year as members of the Class 5A Big East Conference, the Cavaliers eked out a 27-25 win.

Greensburg Salem (0-2) at Burrell (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: Despite a prolific effort by quarterback Brody Chismar, Greensburg Salem suffered a 42-27 defeat against Indiana Area one week ago. Chismar registered 323 yards and three passing TDs for the Golden Lions, while Colton Miller hauled in 11 passes for 142 yards and a score. On the year, Chismar has connected on 32-of-54 throws for 476 yards, with five touchdowns, and he’s posted 18 carries for 109 yards. Miller has registered 17 receptions for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Greensburg Salem is allowing an average of 47.0 points.

About the Buccaneers: Antonio Perkins scored thrice, including the decisive TD in the final three minutes, to lead Burrell to a 27-26 victory against South Park last week. Perkins compiled 110 yards rushing on 20 carries and passed for 72 yards for the Buccaneers, while Trey Coury added 10 rushes for 75 yards and a touchdown. In two contests, Perkins has accumulated 34 carries for 332 yards and six touchdowns, and he’s hit on 10-of-20 throws for 120 yards.

About the Matchup: The All-Westmoreland clash is a Class 3A nonconference battle, as the Golden Lions are in the Interstate, while the Buccaneers play in the Allegheny Seven. The teams have not met since prior to 2003.

Ligonier Valley (2-0) at Yough (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: The duo of Levi Foust and Blake Hitt propelled Ligonier Valley to a 34-18 home win against Brentwood. Foust, the QB, generated 129 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Hitt amassed 156 yards and a score on the ground for the Rams. On the season, Foust has passed for 151 yards and two scores, along with two picks, and he’s rushed 37 times for 242 yards and a pair of TDs on the ground. Hitt, meanwhile, has posted 22 carries for 218 yards and two touchdowns. The Rams have outpaced their foes by a margin of 76-18 this year.

About the Cougars: Yough was unable to slow Mount Pleasant Area in a 47-14 defeat last week. The game, slated to be played at Mount Pleasant Area, was shifted to Yough as a result of a power outage. Atticus Kimmel and Joe Bibby scored for the Cougars. QB Darius Stephenson was 6-of-16 passing for 48 yards and a score, but with three interceptions, while he rushed nine times for 38 yards. The Cougars have been outscored by a margin of 88-14 for the year.

About the Matchup: While Ligonier Valley plays in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, Yough is in the 3A Three Rivers Conference. The most recent encounter took place in 2023, as the Cougars won 21-0.

Mount Pleasant Area (2-0) at South Allegheny (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: Two scores in a span of six seconds set the tone for Mount Pleasant Area in a 47-14 win against Yough last Friday. Tristian Wtorkiewicz rushed four times for 100 yards, scoring twice on the ground, and he also added a fumble return score for the Vikings. Bobby Smithnosky accounted for a TD pass and a TD run for Mount Pleasant. On the year, Smithnosky has hit 5-of-9 throws for 105 yards, while Cole Hart is 3-of-3 through the air. Kaden Hudec paces the ground game, registering 14 carries for 156 yards, while Wtorkiewicz has five touchdowns.

About the Gladiators: South Allegheny couldn’t slow down Washington, as the Gladiators tasted defeat 55-20 a week ago. Alijah Cook went 13-of-26 for 206 yards, with a pair of TDs and one interception, while he also rushed for a score. Marcel Boxley compiled 11 carries for 98 yards, while Derrick Pace caught three passes for 70 yards, including a score. For the year, Cook is 20-of-44 passing for 340 yards, with three TDs and two picks, while Pace leads SA with three scores. The Gladiators have been outscored 97-20 this season. Brian Hanson serves as the head coach for South Allegheny.

About the Matchup: While the Vikings are in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, the Gladiators play in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. The teams met in a conference tilt in 2023, with Mount Pleasant Area reigning supreme 42-27.

Uniontown Area (2-0) at Southmoreland (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Red Raiders: Uniontown Area claimed a 21-13 home win against Ambridge Area last week. Brayden Hinzy was 5-of-11 passing for 103 yards and a score, while Marcus Evans posted three receptions for 97 yards and a TD and added a 59-yard rushing score. For the year, Evans has six catches for 198 yards and leads the Red Raiders with three TDs. Michael Thomas is the top rusher, accumulating 14 carries for 106 yards. Tim Bukowski is guiding Uniontown Area.

About the Scotties: Jeannette scored on the second play of the game, and the Scotties could never recover in a 33-0 shutout loss last Friday. Reese Jordan had a dozen carries for 65 yards and Dylan Brown rushed for 52 yards in the defeat for the Scotties. Through two games, QB Dawson Wolfe has thrown for 72 yards on 10-of-22 passing, while he’s added 38 carries for 175 yards. Brock Geho and Mason Pergar are tied for the team lead with four receptions apiece. The Scotties have scored just 15 points total on the year.

About the Matchup: In their return to the WPIAL, the Red Raiders are playing in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, while Southmoreland is in the 3A Interstate Conference. Uniontown head coach Tim Bukowski was at the helm of the Scotties two years ago.

Belle Vernon Area (1-1) at West Mifflin Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Leopards: Propelled by a strong defense, Belle Vernon Area blanked Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 35-0 at Quaker Valley High School last week. In addition to pitching the shutout, the Leopards received a pair of scores on the ground and 71 yards rushing from Chase Petrosky, while Jace Gedekoh amassed 95 yards and a score through the air. Through two weeks, Petrosky has 26 carries for 155 yards, while Luca Ghilani leads BVA receivers with six grabs for 76 yards. Gedekoh has hit on 18-of-27 attempts for 207 yards, with two TDs and one pick.

About the Titans: West Mifflin Area blanked Deer Lakes 35-0 last week. The homestanding Titans were led by Armand Hill, a former West Virginia University commit who compiled 23 carries for 203 yards and three scores. On the season, Hill has achieved 256 yards and five scores on 40 carries, while Jarelle Mason has also notched a pair of TDs. Coach BJ Pugh is at the helm of West Mifflin Area.

About the Matchup: Both teams compete in Class 3A, as the Leopards are in the Interstate Conference, while the Titans play in the Three Rivers Conference. The last meeting was lopsided in favor of BVA, as the Leopards cruised 49-3 in 2021.

Valley (1-1) at Quaker Valley (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: A week after snapping a long losing streak, Valley could not build upon the momentum in a 53-7 loss to Ringgold last Friday. Davell McWright notched an 82-yard TD catch for the Vikings, while Skyler Lincoln was 10-of-19 passing for 122 yards, with one TD and a pick.

About the Quakers: Quaker Valley fell 35-8 at Freedom Area last Friday. Nathan Miller accounted for the lone score, as he registered eight carries for 66 yards. Quentin Henderson posted 16 carries spanning 99 yards for QV.

Jeannette (1-1) at New Brighton (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette scored on the second play of the game, and Hunter Schaeffer and Jayce Powell powered the Jayhawks to a 33-0 shutout victory at Southmoreland last week. Schaeffer produced a fumble return score to put the Jayhawks on the board early, while also catching three passes for 114 yards and another score. Powell registered 108 yards rushing and a score, and also hauled in a touchdown reception among his three grabs for 19 yards. For the year, QB Anthony Stuchell has hit on 16-of-25 throws for 239 yards and three TDs. Powell leads the Jayhawks with nine receptions, and he also paces the team with 108 yards rushing, notching a team-best four scores.

About the Lions: New Brighton doubled up host Union 42-21 last week. In the season opener, the Lions fell 41-14 at Shenango. Heath Lewis and Joey Kennedy were both All-Conference performers last year. Coach John Macuga patrols the sidelines for New Brighton.

About the Matchup: Jeannette plays in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while New Brighton is in the Class 2A Midwestern Conference. The teams last squared off in 2003, as Jeannette prevailed 42-16 in the first round of the WPIAL AA playoffs.

Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1) at Carmichaels (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Centurions: Greensburg Central Catholic fell into an early deficit and never recovered in a 42-6 loss on the road against Apollo-Ridge. The lone bright spot for the Centurions was a 96-yard TD run by Blase Bugosh in the third quarter. Despite that big surge, Bugosh finished with 99 yards on eight attempts. Three different QBs attempted a pass for the Centurions in the defeat. Through two weeks, Bugosh has registered 23 carries for 240 yards, scoring five times, while Max Weber has added 24 carries for 115 yards and a pair of TDs.

About the Mighty Mikes: Carmichaels was on the right end of a 38-0 whitewash against Monessen last Friday. The Mighty Mikes opened the year with a 20-13 win at Leechburg. For the season, KC Shook has amassed 34 carries for 186 yards and two scores, while Job Smith has produced a dozen rushes for 132 yards. Ken Perkins serves as the head coach of Carmichaels.

About the Matchup: This is a Class 1A nonconference affair, as the Centurions play in the Eastern Conference, and the Mighty Mikes are from the Tri-County South. The teams haven’t met since prior to 2003.

Frazier (1-1) at Monessen (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Commodores: Frazier edged Keystone Oaks 33-28 last week. In the win, QB Brady Secrest hit on 15-of-25 attempts for 295 yards and two scores, and he added 15 carries for 84 yards and two scores. His favorite target was Nico Anderson, who caught 10 passes for 168 yards, while Austin Stewart had two receptions for 91 yards and a TD. Frazier is under the guidance of Tony Battaglini.

About the Greyhounds: Monessen won the 700th game in program history last Friday, courtesy of a 38-0 blowout against homestanding Carmichaels. Kaier Payne went 10-of-19 through the air for 97 yards for the Greyhounds. Through two weeks, Kayden Kolbeck has six carries for 188 yards and 10 receptions spanning 200 yards, with four total scores.
