The first week of the high school season is in the rear view, as teams across the WPIAL now have a game of experience under their belts. Although severe weather that came through the region on Thursday is threatening the slate of games, the ledger is currently highlighted by four All-Westmoreland matchups. Here’s a detailed examination of all of the games featuring teams from the county.

Penn-Trafford (1-0) at Hempfield Area (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Penn-Trafford scored on each of its first three drives and held Norwin off the scoreboard until the waning moments in a decisive 31-7 triumph last Friday. For the host Warriors, Ben Grabowski hit on 5-of-7 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown and added another score with his legs, while Cody Yacamelli compiled 123 yards on the ground, including the first score of the contest. Nick Ponko added a 32-yard TD catch for PT, and he also led the defense with 11 tackles. Meanwhile, Jack Miller kicked a school-record 51-yard field goal.

About the Spartans: Hempfield Area held a 10-0 lead in the first half, but could not hang on in a 14-13 setback at Bethel Park last Friday. In the loss, Carden Lippmann was efficient for the Spartans, going 8-of-10 for 142 yards, with one score and one interception. Deron Hunter paced Hempfield with three receptions for 106 yards and a TD. Andrew Bentz notched 15 carries spanning 54 yards in the setback.

About the Matchup: The nonconference clash pits the Warriors from the Class 5A Big East Conference against the 6A Spartans. The previous meeting in 2023 went in favor of PT, 41-18.

Greater Latrobe (1-0) at Norwin (0-1) at Penn-Trafford High School – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: AJ Yeboah had a record-setting effort in leading host Greater Latrobe to a 38-14 triumph against Derry Area last week. Yeboah notched 15 carries for a GL-record 264 yards, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile, Dom Scarton threw for 153 yards and two scores for the Wildcats, and Ty Wisniewski, Dante Durigon, and Eli Meeder also scored for GL.

About the Knights: Norwin was held off the scoreboard until the waning moments in a lopsided 31-7 defeat at Penn-Trafford last Friday. Giovanni Rothrauff accounted for the only TD for the Knights, as he rushed 29 times for 96 yards, while Max Ritz threw for 147 yards, and Potter Brozeski snagged nine passes for 90 yards. With their football stadium under construction until 2027, the Knights will play their home contests at Penn-Trafford this season.

About the Matchup: Greater Latrobe competes in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Norwin resides in 6A. Last year, the Knights cruised to a 35-0 shutout win.

Plum (1-0) at Franklin Regional (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Mustangs: Plum smashed Baldwin 43-6 last week. John Nonnenberg hit on 9-of-15 attempts for 198 yards and a pair of scores, while Semaj Robinson hauled in six passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. Luther Trowell had the other touchdown through the air, while CJ Hart posted 11 carries for 70 yards and two TDs on the ground. Matt Morgan is the veteran head coach of Plum.

About the Panthers: Franklin Regional suffered a 34-21 defeat at home to Penn Hills one week ago. Brock Bowser threw for 141 yards on 10-of-22 attempts, and added 17 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown in the setback for the Panthers. Jet Taylor registered 10 attempts on the ground, amassing 96 yards, while Gage Williams had 16 carries for 75 yards.

About the Matchup: This clash is a Class 5A nonconference affair, as the Mustangs compete in the Northeast, while the Panthers are in the Big East. In a Week Zero showdown in 2025, Plum rolled to a 42-13 triumph.

Jeannette (0-1) at Southmoreland (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Despite a big effort from Jayce Powell, Jeannette could not provide enough resistance in a 49-21 home loss to South Range, Ohio. Powell contributed a 90-yard kickoff return score, and added six receptions for 91 yards and another score in the setback for the Jayhawks. Anthony Stuchell completed 11-of-17 throws for 104 yards and a TD. Hunter Schaffer led the rushing attack with 43 yards on just three carries.

About the Scotties: Despite a strong effort by QB Dawson Wolfe, Southmoreland fell short in a 21-15 loss at Connellsville Area. Wolfe notched 28 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 60 yards for the Scotties. Reese Jordan added a TD run for Southmoreland, compiling a dozen carries for 53 yards. Mason Pergar caught four of the six completions.

About the Matchup: While Jeannette resides in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, Southmoreland calls the Class 3A Interstate Conference its home. Southmoreland head coach Dustin Shoaf was an assistant at Jeannette in 2024. The most recent clash came in 2013, as the Jayhawks rolled to a 49-21 victory.

Laurel Highlands (0-1) at Derry Area (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Mustangs: A touchdown run by Bobby Smithnosky on fourth down in overtime proved the difference, as Mount Pleasant Area outlasted homestanding Laurel Highlands 24-17 last Friday. Jonah Coleman caught a TD pass for the Mustangs. Ian Edenfield, a former LH player, is in his first season as the Mustangs head coach.

About the Trojans: Derry Area could not contain AJ Yeboah, who had a record-setting effort in leading host Greater Latrobe to a 38-14 triumph against the Trojans last week. In the setback for the Trojans, Max Doherty rushed 18 times for 82 yards and two TDs, while Nate Stough caught three passes for 91 yards and Parker Petrosky had three grabs covering 31 yards. Quarterback Anthony Sacco completed 9-of-16 throws for 144 yards and a pair of interceptions.

About the Matchup: While the Mustangs play in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, the Trojans compete in the 3A Interstate Conference. Derry Area prevailed 27-13 in the most recent meeting in 2011.

Kiski Area (0-1) at Highlands (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cavaliers: Doomed by an early deficit, Kiski Area fell to Gateway 31-10. The Cavaliers trailed 17-0 in the second quarter. Kiski Area QB Landyn Artman went 12-of-21 for 114 yards and two picks, and he added 14 carries for 72 yards on the ground, including a TD. Ashton Taylor notched 15 carries for 71 yards, while Bryce Bowman was the top receiver, hauling in four passes for 63 yards.

About the Golden Rams: Greensburg Salem’s defense couldn’t stop Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg, who went for 25 carries for 247 yards and two scores on the ground to lead Highlands to a 52-21 triumph in Greensburg one week ago. For the Golden Rams, QB Logan Thies threw for 137 yards and two TDs and rushed for 59 carries on 11 carries and two more scores. Christian Pearson caught two passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Matt Bonislawski is at the helm of Highlands.

About the Matchup: The AK Valley clash pits the Cavs, who play in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference, against the Golden Rams, who are in the 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. The most recent meeting was 2023, as the Cavaliers claimed a 36-21 win in a conference tilt. Kiski Area head coach Brayden Thimons was a standout player at Highlands.

Yough (0-1) at Mount Pleasant (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Yough could not stop Greensburg Central Catholic’s rushing attack, as the Cougars were whitewashed 41-0 at home last Friday. Quarterback Darius Stephenson went 6-of-16 passing for 48 yards, with three interceptions, while he rushed nine times for 38 yards. Joey Bibby led the Cougars with two grabs for 19 yards.

About the Vikings: A touchdown run by Bobby Smithnosky on fourth down in overtime proved the difference, as Mount Pleasant Area outlasted Laurel Highlands 24-17 last week. Kaden Hudec exploded for an 80-yard TD run, finishing with 11 attempts for 127 yards, while Tristan Wtorkiewicz also found the end zone on a run for the visiting Vikings. About the Matchup: While both teams play in Class 3A, Yough is in the Three Rivers Conference, while Mount Pleasant Area resides in the Interstate Conference. A year ago, the Vikings rolled to a 41-7 conference win.

Belle Vernon (0-1) at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (0-1) at Quaker Valley H.S. – 7 p.m.

About the Leopards: Belle Vernon Area failed to contain quarterback Harrison Kolling and running back Tyler Eber, who propelled Thomas Jefferson to a 34-6 triumph last week. The lone score for the Leopards was a 30-yard connection from Jace Gedekoh to Cam Jenko. Gedekoh went 8-of-15 for 87 yards, with a TD and a pick. Chace Petrosky compiled a dozen carries spanning 80 yards for BVA, and Luca Ghilani had three receptions for 34 yards.

About the Chargers: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart fell 30-14 against Shady Side Academy last week. Jamire Samuels led the offense, as he rushed 14 times for 52 yards and a touchdown. Christian Bush also produced a rushing score, while QB JJ Hayden went 7-of-18 for 69 yards and an interception. Donnie Militzer patrols the sidelines for OLSH.

About the Matchup: Both teams play in Class 3A, as the Leopards are in the Interstate Conference, while the Chargers compete in the Western Hills conference.

Greensburg Salem (0-1) at Indiana Area (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: Greensburg Salem’s defense couldn’t stop Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg, who went for 240 yards and two scores on the ground to lead Highlands to a 52-21 triumph in Greensburg last Friday. In the setback, the host Golden Lions received a 99-yard kickoff return score by Stephen Monoghan. Moreover, QB Brody Chismar etched his name in the record books, going 10-of-14 for 155 yards and two touchdowns, which moved him into first on the career passing TD list. Braydon Miller was on the receiving end of both scoring plays from Chismar.

About the Little Indians: Indiana Area was blanked 22-0 at home against Freeport Area last week. The Little Indians allowed three TDS, and also committed a safety. Jason Strack is the QB for Indiana, while Roman Jones is the top running back. Coach Mark Zilinskas is at the helm of Indiana.

About the Matchup: The Golden Lions play in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, while Indiana Area competes in the 4A Greater Allegheny Conference. In 2021, Greensburg Salem scored a 35-14 triumph.

Burrell (1-0) at South Park (0-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Buccaneers: Antonio Perkins had another epic performance, leading Burrell to a 32-7 win against Albert Gallatin in the season opener. The QB rushed 14 times for 222 yards and three TDs, and hit on 4-of-9 throws for 48 yards in the triumph for the Bucs. He and teammate Trey Coury both surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards in the contest. Coury, who also scored a touchdown, posted 14 carries for 83 yards, and Nisaun Jones added six carries for 47 yards. Rocco Giannetti caught one pass spanning 40 yards.

About the Eagles: South Park narrowly fell against East Allegheny 15-14 one week ago. Signal caller Kolby Kostelnik went 12-of-19 for 148 yards and one touchdown through the air, and he also produced a score as a rusher. Logan Hoover led Eagles’ receivers with five grabs for 69 yards, including a TD, while Colsten Heynes accumulated 83 yards on his 24 carries. Championship-winning coach Brian Abbey remains at the helm of South Park.

About the Matchup: This bout is a Class 3A nonconference matchup, as the Buccaneers are in the Allegheny Seven, while the Eagles play in the Three Rivers Conference. The teams met in the 2004 playoffs, as Burrell reigned supreme, 29-23.

Ringgold (0-1) at Valley (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ringgold dropped a 34-12 outcome at Trinity to open the campaign. QB Dennis Hawkins hit on 4-of-8 throws for 47 yards and a touchdown, while Demetri Lowe caught two passes for 26 yards, including the score. Robert Heller guides Ringgold.

About the Vikings: Valley snapped a 25-game skid with a 14-12 win against Serra Catholic. Roman D’Argan and Davell McWright each found paydirt for the visiting Vikings. D’Argan rushed 23 times for 65 yards, while QB Skyler Lincoln completed 8-of-17 attempts for 98 yards, and Ta’Shaun Wilkerson caught five passes for 61 yards.

Brentwood (0-1) at Ligonier Valley (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Spartans: Brentwood was overmatched in a 34-6 loss at Beth-Center. Gavin Lewis produced the lone score for the Spartans, a 7-yard run. Despite the lopsided defeat, Nicky Wardzinski amassed 18 carries for 124 yards, while Lewis had 51 yards on a dozen attempts. Thatcher Eriole hit on 10-of-21 throws for 100 yards, but with three interceptions. Head coach Nick Caponi oversees Brentwood.

About the Rams: Levi Foust proved a dual-threat in guiding Ligonier Valley to a 42-0 blowout against Frazier in the season opener. Foust, the Rams signal caller, threw a 66-yard TD, and he added 13 carries for 113 yards and a score on the ground for LV. Gregory Sleasman was on the receiving end of the long TD pass, while Patrick Latin and Blake Hitt each had 62 yards rushing and a score.

About the Matchup: Brentwood plays in the Class 1A Black Hills Conference, while Ligonier Valley is in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. This marks the first meeting between the teams since the Rams returned to the WPIAL in 2020.

Greensburg Central Catholic (1-0) at Apollo-Ridge (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Centurions: Greensburg Central Catholic had a dominant rushing performance in a 41-0 whitewash against Yough. Blase Bugosh posted four rushing scores for the visiting Centurions, rushing 15 times for 141 yards, while Max Weber had 18 attempts for 117 yards and also scored twice on the ground for GCC.

About the Vikings: Apollo-Ridge bested Riverview 42-19 last week. Chris Dailley led the way for the Vikings, as he completed 10-of-16 throws for 200 yards and a score, and he rushed for 23 yards and three TDs. Gage Wingard caught four passes for 117 yards and a TD, and Logan Schrock added four receptions spanning 71 yards. Veteran coach John Skiba remains at the helm of Apollo-Ridge.

About the Matchup: While GCC plays in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, Apollo-Ridge resides in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. A year ago, the Centurions won 35-16. The Vikings play their home games at historic Owens Field in Apollo.

Monessen (1-0) at Carmichaels (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Greyhounds: Kayden Kolbeck caught eight passes for 153 yards, rushed four times for 129 yards, and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Monessen to a 36-14 victory against Charleroi last Friday. Monessen is in pursuit of the 700th win in program history.

About the Mighty Mikes: Carmichaels edged Leechburg last Friday, 20-13. KC Shook ran for 193 yards and two scores, while Job Smith compiled 118 yards on seven carries.
