Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Monday, April 28th 2025:
Norwin 5 Mount Lebanon 1
Norwin got off on the right foot, scoring three runs in the first inning while tallying two more in the third to down Mount Lebanon 5-1 in a Section 2-6A battle. Ryan Helphenstine led the charge going 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Knights (11-6, 6-3). Jake Knight and Ben Geissler each finished with two hits, including a double. Ethen Culbertson was the winning pitcher allowing just one run on seven hits in a complete game victory. He whiffed four batters. Maddox Yost and Mikey Tetlow each had two hits for the Blue Devils (7-9, 6-3). The two teams are now tied for second place in the section and will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday.
Hempfield Area 15 Woodland Hills 0
Hempfield Area scored in every inning as the Spartans shut out Woodland Hills 15-0 in a four-inning, Section 2-6A win. Ian Kovalcik paced the Spartans 13-hit attack with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Quinn Wilkins wasn't far behind as he finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Hempfield Area (5-11, 3-6). Drew Jones also notched two hits, knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice. Josh Cayer pitched three innings to pick up the victory on the mound. The Wolverines drop to (2-10, 0-9).
Plum 12 Franklin Regional 5 WATCH BROADCAST
With the game tied at 3-3, Plum plated three runs in the sixth inning and then tacked on six more in the seventh to secure a 12-5 Section 1-5A victory at Franklin Regional. Luke Williams drove in three runs while Ryan Catello notched a pair of hits for the Panthers (10-3, 6-2). Jake Dombkowski finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mustangs (12-2, 7-1) who now have a one game lead for first place in the section.
Penn-Trafford 11 Kiski Area 4
Kiski Area had a short lived 2-1 lead after one inning as the Warriors scored twice in the second and then took control with four more runs in the fourth to eventually win the game 11-4 in Section 1-5A play. Brayden Stone went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for Penn-Trafford (10-5, 6-2). Logan Matrisch reached base four times with two hits, two walks, two RBIs plus a run scored while Ethan Septak brought home three runs. Dom Delio yielded four runs, two earned, while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Noah Maston drove in a run and scored once for the Cavaliers (2-10, 1-7).
Greater Latrobe 9 Armstrong 4
Greater Latrobe scored the last five runs of the game to pull away from Armstrong and secure a 9-4 victory over Armstrong in Section 1-5A. Luke Nipar-Smith had a huge night for the Wildcats going 3-for-3 with a triple, double, four RBIs and a run scored. Brody Rumon and Mason Leonard each finished with two hits and two runs scored. Leonard brought home a pair of runs. Cole Short was the winning pitcher as he allowed four runs, all unearned, in 6 2/3 innings for Greater Latrobe (11-4, 6-2). Carson Delano posted a pair of hits for the River Hawks (6-9, 4-6). With the win, the Wildcats are now tied with Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford for second place in the section.
Belle Vernon 10 Albert Gallatin 0
Connor Bergman and Seth Tomalski each had two hits and two RBIs while Parker Lind struck out 16 batters as Belle Vernon earned a 10-0, six-inning win over Albert Gallatin in Section 2-4A. Cole Matusik added two hits and scored three times for the Leopards (9-2, 6-2) who bounced back after two section losses to Elizabeth Forward last week. In addition to his 16 strikeouts, Lind allowed just one hit in six innings of work to earn the victory. The Colonials drop to (4-8, 4-6).
Knoch 2 Derry Area 1
Kaden Dreher's two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Knoch a 2-1 walk-off victory over Derry Area in Section 3-4A. The Trojans tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning on a ground out by Michael Aaron which scored Collin Barkley. They put runners at first and third in the top of the eighth inning but a strikeout ended the threat. John Wasnick had two hits for Derry Area (6-6, 5-4). Zane Pacek pitched all nine innings for the Knights (8-9, 4-4) surrendering one run on five hits.
Greensburg Salem 10 Highlands 0
Greensburg Salem struck for eight runs in the first inning to take control of the game early and cruised to a 10-0 five-inning triumph over Highlands in a Section 3-4A contest. Robert Visnick, Tyler Martin and Brody Chismar each drove in two runs while Braedon Leatherman collected two hits for the Golden Lions (7-6, 5-4). Leatherman was also the winning pitcher as he tossed five scoreless innings while striking out four. The Golden Rams fall to (5-11, 1-8).
Indiana 5 Valley 0
Greg Minnick and Sullivan Vanhoose combined for a perfect game as Indiana knocked off Valley 5-0 in a Section 3-4A clash. Minnick worked five innings, striking out nine batters while Vanhoose whiffed two batters in two frames. Tim Birch notched three hits and scored three runs for the Indians (13-1, 8-0). Valley is now (7-10, 2-7).
Deer Lakes 3 Burrell 0
Deer Lakes took advantage of four errors committed by Burrell to earn a 3-0 win against the Buccaneers in Section 3-3A action. All three runs scored by the Lancers off of pitcher Brayden Mell were unearned. Isaac Lacinski had two hits, including a double, for Burrell (8-6, 7-4). Jake Fleischer posted a pair of hits for the Lancers (7-5, 6-3). As a result of Deer Lakes victory, the Lancers now trail Burrell for second place by one game.
Ligonier Valley 12 Southmoreland 0
Noah Knupp had two hits and four RBIs to help lift Ligonier Valley to a 12-0 five-inning victory against visiting Southmoreland in a Section 3-3A game. In addition to Knupp, Duncan Foust had three hits, Austin Harr doubled twice and scored two times for the Rams (5-7, 4-4) while Miles Smith picked up two hits, two RBIs and scored a pair of runs. Harr was the winning pitcher, he allowed just three hits and struck out eight in five shutout innings. The Scotties fall to (1-12, 0-9).
Freeport 7 Yough 2
Yough had no answer for Freeport's Michael Hanz who had three hits, including a home run and a double, with two RBIs and three runs scored as the Yellowjackets beat the Cougars 7-2 in Section 3-3A. Tyler Burkett had two hits and a run scored to lead the Cougars (2-9, 2-6). The Yellowjackets improve to (9-6, 5-4).
Jeannette 5 Mapletown 3
Jeannette scored three runs in the sixth inning to go in front of Mapletown and earn a 5-3 win in Section 1-1A. Jayden Kennedy recorded two hits and two RBIs to power the Jayhawks (5-7, 3-4) while teammate Evyn Yargeau tallied two hits. Amari Thomas worked two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound. He struck out a pair of batters. Mapletown drops to (1-10, 0-8).
