Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Tuesday, April 1st 2025:
Norwin 12 Hempfield Area 2
Norwin scored in five of seven innings, cruising to a 12-2 victory at Hempfield Area in Section 1-6A. The Knights plated five runs in the second inning and led 5-2 after three. They then added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh frame. Nate Silberman and Colton Gounder each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace Norwin (3-4, 1-1) while Brayden Wardzinski struck out six batters in a complete game victory. Quinn Wilkins had a pair of hits, including a double, for the Spartans (3-4, 1-1).
Franklin Regional 3 Kiski Area 1
Brady Yarabinetz supplied the big hit late as Franklin Regional topped Kiski Area 3-1 in a hard fought Section 1-5A battle. With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Panthers' Luke Williams led off with a single and N.J. Ramchandran followed with a walk. The two would execute a double steal to put two runners in scoring position for Yarabinetz who cracked a 3-1 pitch down the right field line to score both Williams and Ramchandran. The Cavaliers put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh inning but reliever Ethan Raver got a strikeout and a groundout to end the contest. Williams finished with two hits, including a double, scored a run and knocked in a run for Franklin Regional (6-1, 3-0). Jonah Willochell earned the victory on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings. Raver picked up the save. John Deluca notched a pair of hits for the Cavaliers (0-4, 0-1).
Greater Latrobe 20 Penn Hills 1
Greater Latrobe pounded out 19 hits in only five innings as the Wildcats mercy ruled Penn Hills winning 20-1 in a Section 1-5A game. Josh Short had two hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Wildcats (5-3, 2-2). Josh Vacca collected two doubles while Brody Rumon and Andrew Hantz also finished with two hits each. Rumon and Hantz each knocked in a pair of runs. Cole Short worked four innings to record the victory. Anthony Sipple doubled for the Indians (0-7, 0-4).
Penn-Trafford 5 Armstrong 3
After Armstrong won in extra innings the day prior, Penn-Trafford rebounded with a 5-3 triumph over the River Hawks in a Section 1-5A tussle. Down 2-1 after five innings, the Warriors scored three times in the sixth on an Armstrong error and a Johnny Lovre two-run double. The River Hawks made it 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth but Ethan Septak doubled home an insurance run in the seventh for P-T. Logan Matrisch went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Penn-Trafford (5-3, 3-1). Hunter Brown worked two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound. Nick Kinter supplied two RBIs for Armstrong (2-5, 1-3).
Belle Vernon 5 Ringgold 2
Parker Lind racked up 11 strikeouts leading Belle Vernon to a 5-2 win against Ringgold in Section 2-4A play. The key hits for the Leopards were a two-run double from Connor Bergman in the third inning and a single that brought home a pair of runs by Kole Doppelheuer in the fourth. Lind, who did not walk a batter, yielded just one unearned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings for Belle Vernon (5-0, 3-0). Gavin Angotti finished with two hits, including a double, for the Rams (2-4, 1-2).
Greensburg Salem 8 Knoch 2
After being no-hit by Zane Pacek on Monday, Greensburg Salem responded with nine hits on Tuesday defeating Knoch 8-2 in Section 3-4A play. Peyton Chismar and Anthony Matthews each finished with two hits. Matthews drove in three runs while Chismar knocked in two. Ayden Crissman scored three times for the Golden Lions (3-3, 1-1). Braedon Leatherman pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings for the win. Kaden Dreher and Kyle Morgan both registered two hits for the Knights (4-4, 1-1).
Derry Area 4 Valley 2
Max Doherty reached base four times and Anthony Sacco finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to carry Derry Area past Valley 4-2 in a Section 3-4A showdown. The Vikings led 2-1 midway through but the Trojans scored twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to claim the victory. In addition to his offense, Doherty also earned the win on the mound as he struck out eight batters in six innings for Derry Area (2-2, 1-0). Cason Long struck out the side in the seventh to collect the save. Ben Mehalick and Brett Crawn each drove in a run for the Vikings (5-2, 0-1).
Deer Lakes 9 Mount Pleasant 6
Noah Shurina, Ben Shurina and Garrett Waybright each hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning as Deer Lakes rallied from a 6-4 deficit to take down Mount Pleasant 9-6 in Section 3-3A. Cole Chatfield went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Vikings (5-3, 3-1). Nolan Danka got the win for the Lancers (3-3, 3-1).
Greensburg Central Catholic 14 Jeannette 3
Greensburg Central Catholic pounded out 13 hits as it went on to upend Jeannette 14-3 in five innings in a Section 1-1A clash. Anthony Grippo finished with three hits, including a double, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Centurions (5-1, 3-0). Stephen Kochis contributed two hits and also crossed the plate three times. Tyler Samide started and went all five innings for the victory on the mound. Noah Rattigan collected two hits, including a triple, for the Jayhawks (1-3, 0-1).
