Westmoreland County softball game recaps from Monday, April 28th 2025:
Seneca Valley 2 Hempfield Area 1
Hempfield Area suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-1 at Seneca Valley in a marque Section 1-6A showdown. Raiders’ (12-2, 10-2) hurler Lexie Hames permitted just one hit and compiled 18 strikeouts. Hames also garnered three intentional walks, while Lauren Foligno had an RBI single. Riley Miller was the hard-luck loser for the Spartans (14-1, 10-1), as she allowed four hits and struck out five, while Lauren Howard provided the only hit. Both teams scored a run on an error.
North Allegheny 3 Norwin 2
Host Norwin was narrowly edged 3-2 by North Allegheny in a Section 1-6A showdown. Makenna Black and Addison Grimes each doubled in the setback for the Knights (5-10, 5-7), while McKenna Rowlands and Erin Fadgen had extra-base hits for the Tigers (10-7, 9-5).
Armstrong 6 Franklin Regional 3
Despite a home run and three RBIs from Ciara Camacho, homestanding Franklin Regional fell to Armstrong 6-3 in Section 2-5A. Calise Czekanski belted a homer for the River Hawks (12-5, 8-4). The Panthers (12-4, 8-2) and River Hawks have both already clinched playoff berths.
Greater Latrobe 11 McKeesport Area 3
Greater Latrobe used a potent offense to roll to an 11-3 win at McKeesport Area in a Section 2-5A tilt. Julianna Bulebosh went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Wildcats (9-7, 6-5), who secured a postseason berth.
Greensburg Salem 14 Valley 0
Alle Scarpa was dominant in the circle once again for Greensburg Salem, which rolled to a 14-0 home victory against Valley in Section 1-4A play. Scarpa tossed a five-inning shutout, racking up 10 strikeouts, while she produced three RBIs at the plate. Also for the Golden Lions (9-4, 5-4), Cate Waugaman and Sammie Reusser had three runs batted in apiece. The Vikings (0-14, 0-10) remained winless.
Derry Area 5 Freeport Area 3
Haylee Myers was stellar in leading Derry Area to a 5-3 triumph against host Freeport Area in a Section 1-4A matchup. Myers permitted just a pair of hits while amassing 16 strikeouts. She also smacked a home run for the playoff-bound Trojans (9-3, 7-2), as did Sophia Doherty and Bailey Legge.
Elizabeth Forward 12 Belle Vernon Area 2
Belle Vernon Area was overwhelmed in a 12-2 loss at Elizabeth Forward in Section 2-4A action. The Leopards (8-9, 6-5) received hits from Lauren VanDivner and Katie Sokol in the setback. For the Warriors (11-2, 9-1), Berlyn Holibaugh went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Addison Musisko contributed four RBIs.
Mount Pleasant 9 Yough 2 WATCH BROADCAST
Propelled by a six-run inning, Mount Pleasant Area registered a 9-2 victory at Yough in a Section 1-3A tussle. The section champion Vikings (10-5, 8-2) broke a 1-1 tie with six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Ella Alakson had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Dani Trainer also had two hits and worked three scoreless innings, not permitting a hit while fanning five for the Vikings. Brooke Kowalski produced a pair of hits for the Cougars (4-8, 2-6).
Southmoreland 14 Burrell 9
Southmoreland prevailed in a slugfest, downing Burrell 14-9 in Section 1-3A battle. Makayla Etling registered a 4-for-4 effort, smacking two homers, a double, and driving in four runs, while Taryn Hollis added three RBIs for the Scotties (8-5, 6-3), who have clinched a playoff spot. In the road defeat, the Buccaneers (7-10, 3-7) were paced by Pyper Ferres, who went 5-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs, as well as Bella Stewart, who went 3-for-3 with a homer and three runs batted in.
Deer Lakes 11 Ligonier Valley 6
Ligonier Valley could not make an early lead stand, falling 11-6 at Deer Lakes in Section 1-3A. The Rams (3-9, 3-4) were led by Elyse Witcoski, who had a pair of hits and three stolen bases, while Natalie Bizup homered. Siena Miller went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for the Lancers (7-10, 5-5).
Serra Catholic 4 Jeannette 0
Jeannette could not solve pitcher Kelly Morrissey, as Serra Catholic notched a 4-0 triumph in a Section 3-1A clash of playoff-bound teams. Morrissey tossed a one-hitter, striking out 14 for the Eagles (7-5, 7-1). Grace Stein notched the lone hit for the Jayhawks (7-4, 6-1).
