WPIAL girls soccer semifinal playoff results from Tuesday, November 2nd:
Mount Pleasant 1 South Park 0, OT (2A)
Riley Gesinski netted the winning goal in overtime for No. 2 Mount Pleasant, as the Vikings notched a 1-0 victory against third-seeded South Park in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals on Tuesday at Peters Township High School. Gesinski’s golden goal came shortly after a corner kick for Mount Pleasant in extra time, while Vikings goalkeeper Laurel Rummel posted the clean sheet. As a result, Mount Pleasant Area will seek its first WPIAL title against No. 5 Avonworth on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Highmark Stadium in Station Square. Additionally, the Vikes (19-1-0) have secured a spot in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs.
Mars Area 4 Greater Latrobe 1 (3A)
Despite claiming the first two playoffs wins in program history earlier this postseason, Greater Latrobe could not upset the three-time defending WPIAL and PIAA champions, as top-seeded Mars Area bounced the No. 5 Wildcats 4-1 in the Class 3A semifinals at Gateway High School on Tuesday. After failing to score in regulation through their first two playoff games, the Fightin’ Planets scored three times in the opening half on Tuesday, courtesy of Ainsley Ray, Piper Coffield, and Lily Wolf. Eden Gerlach also tallied for Mars Area, while the lone Wildcats goal came from Annalyse Bauer. While Mars Area advances to play No. 2 Moon Area on Saturday for the WPIAL gold, Greater Latrobe (12-3-2) will have a chance to earn a PIAA berth, as the Wildcats will battle Plum on Thursday in the consolation match.
WPIAL girls soccer semifinal playoff results from Monday, November 1st:
Freedom 4 Greensburg Central Catholic 3, OT (1A)
Shay Bailey's breakaway goal in double-overtime lifted top-seeded Freedom to a 4-3 win against No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic in a WPIAL 1A semifinal at North Allegheny on Monday. The Centurions trailed by deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 in the contest but fought back to eventually force overtime. Sara Felder notched the first two goals for GCC while Sophia Fischer earned the game-tying tally with 16 minutes left in regulation. Despite Greensburg Central Catholic Catholic controlling portions of play in overtime, the Centurions couldn't beat Freedom freshman goalkeeper Trinity Votjko who finished with 12 saves. Leah Jones made eight stops for GCC (12-4-0) which was playing in its 13th straight WPIAL semifinal. The Bulldogs (16-4-0) will meet Springdale (16-3-0) in the WPIAL 1A championship on Friday at Highmark Stadium.
WPIAL girls soccer quarterfinal playoff results from Saturday, October 29th:
Mount Pleasant 4 Freeport 0 (2A)
Marissa Garn posted two goals and an assist to lead No. 2 Mount Pleasant to a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Freeport in a WPIAL 2A quarterfinal on Saturday at Viking Stadium. Riley Gesinski tallied the opening goal of the contest about 20 minutes into the first half to give Mount Pleasant a 1-0 lead. Garn came up with her first goal nearly five minutes later to put the Vikings ahead 2-0 at halftime. She made it 3-0 off of a corner kick from Gesinski in the 57th minute. With just a couple minutes left in regulation, Morgan Gesinski took a pass from Garn and scored to set the final at 4-0. Laurel Rummel made five saves in goal. The Vikings (18-1-0) will face No. 3 South Park (14-5-0) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Peters Township.
WPIAL girls soccer quarterfinal playoff results from Thursday, October 27th:
Greater Latrobe 3 Thomas Jefferson 0 (3A)
After winning the first playoff game in program history earlier this week, fifth-seeded Greater Latrobe continued its postseason run with a 3-0 road win against No. 4 Thomas Jefferson in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals on Thursday. The Wildcats received goals from Regan Reilly, Robin Reilly, and Annalyse Bauer. Bauer opened the scoring with a marker in the first half. Regan Reilly extended the GL lead early in the second half, while Robin Reilly netted an insurance marker shortly after to account for the final margin. Sofia DeCerb recorded the clean sheet for Greater Latrobe, making three saves. The Wildcats advance to face top-seeded Mars Area in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Mars Area 1 Franklin Regional 0, OT (3A)
For the second-straight playoff game, top-seeded and three-time defending WPIAL champion Mars Area required extra time to prevail, as the host Fightin’ Planets edged No. 9 Franklin Regional 1-0 in the first overtime in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals on Thursday. Gwen Howell scored the golden goal on a header in the 88th minute. Franklin Regional goalkeeper Aris Lamanna registered 21 saves. While unbeaten Mars Area advances to the semifinals to face No. 5 Greater Latrobe on Tuesday, the Panthers end the season with a record of 11-6-2.
WPIAL girls soccer quarterfinal playoff results from Wednesday, October 26th:
Greensburg Central Catholic 6 Chartiers-Houston 1 (1A)
The fifth seed Centurions posted a dominant victory against No. 4 Chartiers-Houston 6-1 in the WPIAL Class 1A quarterfinals on Wednesday. Riley Kerr was the catalyst for Greensburg Central Catholic, as she tallied four goals, while Alexia Graham and Sara Felder also ripped the twine. GCC advances to the semifinals to battle top-seeded Freedom Area on Monday.
WPIAL girls soccer first round playoff results from Tuesday, October 25th:
Mount Pleasant Area 12 West Mifflin 0 (2A)
Freshman Morgan Gesinski produced seven goals and an assist in leading Mount Pleasant Area to a dominant 12-0 victory at home against West Mifflin in the WPIAL Class 2A first round on Tuesday. The second-seeded Vikings also received a three-goal, four-assist effort from Rylin Bugosh, while Sophia Gonofsky and Marissa Garn also tallied and Laurel Rummel posted the clean sheet. The Vikings advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday, and will battle against No. 7 Freeport Area.
Freeport Area 2 Southmoreland 0 (2A)
The No. 7 Yellowjackets blanked No. 10 Southmoreland in the WPIAL Class 2A first round on Tuesday. Playing at home, Freeport Area received markers from Akina Boynton and Katie Borromeo, while Olivia Giancola registered the shutout in net. While Freeport Area moves on to face No. 2 Mount Pleasant Area on Saturday, the Scotties’ season ends with a mark of 11-4-1.
Shady Side Academy 6 Yough 1 (2A)
A balanced offensive performance propelled sixth-seeded Shady Side Academy past No. 11 Yough 6-1 on Tuesday in the WPIAL Class 2A first round. McKenzie Pritts scored for the Cougars, while the host Bulldogs received goals from Sadie Navid, Ainsley Chu, Morgan Golden, Ella Van Norman, Cooper Danforth, and Reese Martin. Yough’s final record for 2022 is 10-7-1, while the Bulldogs advance to the quarterfinals to face South Park on Saturday.
Beaver Area 1 Burrell 0 (2A)
A goal with five minutes left in regulation proved the difference for Beaver Area, as the homestanding Bobcats edged No. 9 Burrell 1-0 in the Class 2A first round. Sydney Chontos notched the winner for eighth-seeded Beaver Area, which will battle top seed North Catholic in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Burrell’s season concludes with a record of 11-4-3.
North Catholic 5 Valley 1 (2A)
Seeded atop the WPIAL Class 2A bracket, North Catholic ousted No. 16 Valley 5-1 in the first round on Tuesday. Lauren MacDonald netted a hat trick, while Simone Sharpless accounted for the other two goals for the Trojans, who will play Beaver Area in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Valley’s season ends at 7-10-0.
WPIAL girls soccer first round playoff results from Monday, October 24th:
Greater Latrobe 6 Ringgold 1 (3A)
Greater Latrobe captured the first playoff win in program history, as the No. 5 Wildcats ousted No. 12 Ringgold 6-1 on Monday in the WPIAL Class 3A first round. The homestanding Wildcats received a first-half hat trick from Robin Reilly and she added two assists, while Annalyse Bauer, Regan Reilly, and Ella Bulava also tallied goals. The Wildcats move on to the quarterfinals on Thursday, and will play on the road against fourth-seeded Thomas Jefferson.
Franklin Regional 1 South Fayette 0 (3A)
Abby Paterline notched the deciding goal on a penalty kick, as No. 9 Franklin Regional edged eighth-seeded and host South Fayette 1-0 in the WPIAL Class 3A first round. Paterline’s marker came in the 66th minute, while Aris Lamanna recorded the shutout for the Panthers. Franklin Regional will next face top-seeded Mars Area on Thursday.
Mars Area 1 Penn-Trafford 0, OT (3A)
Penn-Trafford nearly pulled off a stunner against three-time defending WPIAL champion Mars Area, but the Fightin’ Planets scored in the first overtime to claim a 1-0 win against the No. 16 Warriors on Monday in the WPIAL Class 3A first round. Gwen Howell netted the winning goal in extra time, allowing Mars Area to advance to the quarterfinals against No. 9 Franklin Regional on Thursday. The Warriors conclude the 2022 season with a mark of 8-7-4.
Plum 9 Kiski Area 0 (3A)
Plum scored four times in the first half, and didn’t slow down after the intermission en route to a 9-0 win against No. 14 Kiski Area in the Class 3A first round on Monday. The third seed and host Mustangs received a three-goal effort from Kaitlyn Killinger, while Ava Weleski added two markers. Cavaliers goalkeeper Maxine Crosby recorded eight saves. While the Mustangs move on to the quarterfinals to square off against Montour on Thursday, Kiski Area’s season ends at 7-11-1.
