Wildcats edge Panthers in Big East play; Norwin claims huge win in 6A; Trojans capture another dramatic win at Bucs' expense

Greater Latrobe 13 Franklin Regional 7 - WATCH BROADCAST

Chris Cochran notched a long touchdown and Sawyer Butina snagged an interception late to seal Greater Latrobe’s 13-7 home victory against Franklin Regional in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Cochran compiled 133 yards on the ground for the Wildcats (2-2, 1-0), while QB Dom Scarton also found paydirt on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Franklin Regional’s Dominick Devola accounted for the Panthers’ (0-4, 0-1) lone score, a 6-yard run, but he was intercepted by Butina with approximately 90 seconds left in the contest.

Woodland Hills 49 Penn-Trafford 21 - WATCH BROADCAST

Penn-Trafford failed to slow down Scoop Smith, who had two kickoff return scores in a span of 28 seconds, as the Warriors fell 49-21 to Woodland Hills at the Wolvarena in Class 5A Big East Conference action. Taylor Reid also had a stellar effort for the Wolverines (2-2, 1-0), as he rushed for 171 yards and three scores. Cody Yacamelli paced PT (3-1, 0-1) with 146 yards on the ground, including an 80-yard TD, while Ben Grabowski also scored a touchdown in his return to the lineup for the Warriors. Penn-Trafford committed three turnovers, and also had five turnovers on downs.

Clairton 43 Greensburg Central Catholic 0 - WATCH BROADCAST

Host Greensburg Central Catholic had no answers for QB Jeff Thompson and could not solve the Clairton defense, as the Centurions were blanked by the Bears 43-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference matchup. Thompson completed 18-of-23 throws for 288 yards and three scores, and he added another TD on the ground for Clairton (2-1, 1-0). Additionally, Brandon Murphy hauled in seven passes for 121 yards, while Deon Lovelace-Pomphey notched two rushing scores. Samir Crosby had two receptions for 34 yards for the Centurions (2-2, 0-1).

Derry Area 13 Burrell 7 - WATCH BROADCAST

Max Doherty scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to propel Derry Area to a 13-7 home victory against Burrell in a nonconference clash. A sack and forced fumble by Dylan Pitzer in the final minute sealed the victory for the Trojans (3-1). Doherty compiled 22 carries for 103 yards and two scores, while Anthony Sacco threw for 91 yards. In the defeat for the Buccaneers (1-3), Trey Coury scored the lone touchdown on a 1-yard run. QB Antonio Perkins went 11-of-24 passing for 80 yards, while he added 63 yards rushing and snagged an interception on defense.

Norwin 56 Seneca Valley 13

Norwin QB Tristyn Tavares factored into five touchdowns, as the Knights dominated host Seneca Valley 56-13 in Class 6A play. Potter Brozeski contributed a 96-yard kickoff return score, while Josh Lenart, Giovanni Rothrauff, Jake Knight, Zach Pawling, and Parker Rigo all found pay dirt for Norwin (3-1, 1-0).

North Allegheny 56 Hempfield Area 13

Hempfield Area could not contain the rushing attack of North Allegheny, as the host Tigers rolled to a 56-13 win in Class 6A play. Brady Brinkley compiled 85 yards and two scores on the ground, while adding 126 yards and a TD through the air for NA (4-0, 1-0). Luke Rohan posted 88 yards and a touchdown, as well, for the Tigers. The Spartans (3-1, 0-1) scored on a 10-yard connection from Dom Detruf to Aidan Stinebiser in the first quarter, while JM Landa tallied a 23-yard TD run in the second half.

Gateway 34 Kiski Area 31

Despite strong showings from Landyn Artman and Aven Shirley, Kiski Area fell 34-31 at Gateway in a Class 5A Big East Conference battle. Artman threw for 142 yards and four scores through the air, Aven Shirley registered three touchdowns and an interception, and Teegan Shirley and Andrew Finney added TD receptions for the Cavaliers (1-3, 0-1). Mayson Mitchell threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, along with three interceptions, for the Gators (1-3, 1-0).

Imani Christian Academy 72 Valley 0

Valley could not slow down Gabe Jenkins, as the Vikings were whitewashed 72-0 against Imani Christian Academy in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference. Jenkins threw for three TDs, rushed for another, and also found the end zone on a punt return for the Saints (4-0, 1-0). The Vikings (0-4, 0-1) have been shut out in three of four games this year.

Shady Side Academy 42 Ligonier Valley 6

Ligonier Valley fell 42-6 at Shady Side Academy in Class 2A Allegheny Conference action. Javon Johnston tossed three TDs for the Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0). Bryce Vida registered the only score for the Rams (0-4, 0-1).

Jeannette 61 Frazier 19

A flurry of scores in the first half gave Jeannette an insurmountable lead, as the Jayhawks overwhelmed Frazier 61-19 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference lid lifter. Kymon’e Brown scored four touchdowns on the ground, including a 68-yard TD run to open the scoring, and Hunter Schaeffer reeled off a 69-yard kickoff return score to propel the Jayhawks (3-1, 1-0). Brown finished with 142 yards rushing, while he threw for 102 yards and two scores. Jayce Powell had four receptions for 58 yards and two TDs for the Jayhawks. In the loss, Derek Diamond rushed for 202 yards and two scores for the Commodores (2-2, 0-1).

Monessen 13 Serra Catholic 6

McKeesport Area 20 Belle Vernon Area 7

An injury to quarterback Curty Wade loomed large in Belle Vernon Area’s 20-7 home loss to McKeesport Area in a nonconference showdown. Wade was 5-of-5 passing for 95 yards in the first half, and he added an 18-yard TD run, but he was sidelined early in the third quarter, and the Leopards (1-2) sputtered offensively from that point forward. The Tigers (2-2) enjoyed success on the ground despite the absence of Kemon Spell, as Akeem Cochran rushed for 92 yards and a TD, while Javier Everett posted 84 yards on the ground and Avont Hudson added 71 yards rushing and a score.

Southmoreland 24 Blackhawk 17

Jackson Mickens scored twice, including on a blocked punt, to help Southmoreland remain undefeated in a 24-17 win at Blackhawk. Mickens returned the block 19 yards for a score, and he rushed for 41 yards for the Scotties (4-0). Additionally, Dawson Wolfe threw for 114 yards, and he added a touchdown run. Brayden McCarthy notched both touchdowns for the Cougars (1-3).

Mount Pleasant Area 28 Ambridge Area 27

A fourth-quarter touchdown by Dane Firmstone and subsequent extra point by Tyke Snyder proved the difference, as host Mount Pleasant Area edged Ambridge Area. Freshman Kaden Hudec rushed 20 times for 118 yards, including two TDs for the Vikings (2-2), while Richard Shawley added 98 yards and a score on the ground. DJ Cain compiled 163 yards rushing in the loss for the Bridgers (0-4).

Ringgold 33 Greensburg Salem 13

Greensburg Salem suffered a 33-13 home loss to Ringgold in a nonconference matchup. Dennis Hawkins amassed 220 yards and three scores through the air for the Rams (3-1), while Amoni Ward added 163 yards rushing and 98 yards receiving, notching two total touchdowns. Brody Chismar hit on 9-of-20 throws for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 72 yards for the Golden Lions (2-2). Furthermore, Tyrese Lewis and Braydon Miller were on the receiving end of the scores, as Miller paced GS with three grabs for 53 yards.

New Castle 53 Yough 0

Yough failed to find the end zone in a 53-0 loss on the road against New Castle. Kai Cox posted a pair of punt return touchdowns for the Red Hurricanes (3-1). The Cougars (2-2) have been shut out in consecutive weeks.
