Seton Hill pitcher Kevin Vaupel was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.
Vaupel posted a 6-1 record last spring with a 2.04 ERA. In 53 innings, he struck out 68 batters and walked only 11. Vaupel was a favorite to win PSAC West Pitcher of the Year but had arm discomfort in a start against Clarion on April 14th and was shut down the rest of the season. Despite ranking 41st in innings pitched in the PSAC, Vaupel still finished 11th in strikeouts.
For his career, the South Park lefty posted a 13-5 record over 30 starts with 175 strikeouts and just 38 walks.
Vaupel becomes the highest draft pick in Seton Hill program history and the sixth Griffin player overall to hear his name called.
He joins former SHU pitcher Patrick Monteverde in the Marlins farm system.
