Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Tuesday, April 22nd 2025:
Canon-McMillan 7 Hempfield Area 1
Owen Shuglie and Colin Polechko each had two hits for Hempfield Area but it wasn't enough as the Spartans fell to Canon-McMillan 7-1. The Big Macs struck for five runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Nico Patragas homered for Canon-McMillan (11-4, 7-3) as the Spartans lost their third straight and fall to (5-9, 3-4).
Franklin Regional 3 Armstrong 0 WATCH BROADCAST
Starting on the mound for the first time this season, N.J. Ramchandran combined with James Templeton to shut out Armstrong 3-0 in a Section 1-5A game. Ramchandran worked five scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out nine batters while Templeton yielded just one hit in two innings of relief to earn the save for the Panthers (9-3, 5-2). The River Hawks drop to (6-8, 4-5).
Penn-Trafford 17 Penn Hills 0
Penn-Trafford plated 10 runs in the sixth inning to complete a 17-0 shutout of Penn Hills in a Section 1-5A match up. Matthew Stewart and Jason Malamisuro each had two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors (9-5, 5-2) while Zach Feldman scored four runs. Jon Lovre tossed six shutout innings to pick up the victory. He whiffed eight batters while allowing only one hit. Dontae Giddens was player that had the hit for the Indians (0-12, 0-9).
Plum 17 Kiski Area 13
In a game that featured 22 hits and 15 walks, Plum came out on top 17-13 in Section 1-5A play. The contest was knotted at 13-all until the Mustangs brought in four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead. Kiski Area out-hit Plum 14-8 but Cavaliers pitchers issued 12 walks and hit three batters. Zach Hald went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored for Kiski Area (2-9, 1-6) while teammate Lucas Klimkowski had two hits and drove in three. Max Vollmer notched three hits, including a pair of doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored for the Mustangs (11-2, 6-1).
Belle Vernon 10 Charleroi 0
Belle Vernon plated eight runs in the fifth inning to secure a 10-run rule victory over Charleroi in a non-conference clash. Alonzo Wade went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored plus brought in a run for the Leopards (9-2, 6-2). Braden Andrews also contributed two hits for BVA. Parker Lind fired three scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the win. Charleroi drops to (6-5, 5-3).
Greensburg Salem 8 Derry Area 0
Braedon Leatherman and Tyler Martin combined on a six-hit shutout as Greensburg Salem earned an 8-0 victory over visiting Derry Area in a Section 3-4A clash. Dom Rosensteel, Tyler Martin and Peyton Chismar each registered two hits for the Golden Lions (6-5, 4-3) while Brody Chismar drove in two runs. Leatherman went 5 1/3 innings of work, compiling five strikeouts to earn the victory with Martin pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. Jon Wasnick collected two hits for the Trojans (4-7) who committed four errors in the game.
Valley 3 Highlands 2
Nikolas Heakins went 3-for-3 and drove in a run as Valley edged Highlands 3-2 in a Section 3-4A game. Benjamin Mehalick added two hits for the Vikings (6-8, 1-6) who earn their first victory in section play. Dominick Dunkel went all seven innings to pick up the win. He surrendered two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six. Jacob King finished with three hits, including a triple and run scored, for the Golden Rams (5-8, 1-6).
Ligonier Valley 8 Yough 7 (11 inn.)
O Smith's walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning was the difference as Ligonier Valley came back to edge Yough 8-7 in a Section 3-3A game. Down 7-5, the Rams rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice to force extra innings. Austin Harr put up three hits and scored two runs for Ligonier Valley (4-7, 3-4) while Gavin Moore produced two hits and two RBIs. Nate Bell finished 3-for-5 with a home run, triple, double and three RBIs for the Cougars (2-10, 2-5). Miles Smith worked six innings of relief for the win. He allowed just two hits and struck out nine batters.
Freeport 13 Burrell 5
Burrell and Freeport were tied 5-5 after three innings but the Yellowjackets produced eight runs over the next three frames to sink Burrell 13-5 in Section 3-3A play. Rayden Shirey and Parker Logut each singled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Buccaneers (6-5, 6-3) who remain in second place. Kason Barker had two hits, four RBIs and scored twice for the Yellowjackets (7-5, 4-3).
Mount Pleasant 11 Southmoreland 1
Conner Drzal finished with three hits and three RBIs leading Mount Pleasant to an 11-1 Section 3-3A win over Southmoreland in five innings. In addition to Drzal, Cole Chatfield went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Vikings (8-4, 7-2). Jacob Kitz struck out nine batters in five innings to pick up the victory on the mound. The Scotties record falls to (1-10, 0-7).
Greensburg Central Catholic 7 Avella 0
Tyler Samide tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings in leading Greensburg Central Catholic to a 7-0 triumph over first place Avella in Section 1-1A. Samide also drove in a run at the plate while Stephen Kochis collected two RBIs for the Centurions (7-2, 5-1). The Eagles are now (10-3, 6-3).
Jeannette 17 West Greene 2
Jayden Kennedy struck for four hits and seven RBIs as the Jayhawks hammered non-conference foe West Greene 17-2 in three innings. Among Kennedy's four hits were two doubles. Noah Sunder finished with two hits, including a two-bagger, and two RBIs for the Jayhawks (4-7, 2-4). Kennedy was also the winning pitcher as he allowed two runs, none earned, in three innings.
