Greensburg Salem’s third-period rally came up short, as the Golden Lions fell to host Fox Chapel Area 3-2 in a first-place battle at the Alpha Ice Complex in Harmarville.

As a result, the Foxes improved to 7-1-0, and with 14 points, moved into sole possession of first place in the Class A Blue Division. Conversely, the Golden Lions suffered their first defeat of the season, and at 6-1-0, with 12 points, dropped to second place in the division.

The Foxes scored twice in the first six minutes of the contest, as Liam Wiseman opened the scoring, and Mason Heininger followed approximately a minute later with a spectacular shot that found the back of the net.

Fox Chapel, which went 19-0-1 during the regular season a year ago, added to their lead midway through the second period. Danny Downey scored on a shorthanded breakaway to tally his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Meanwhile, Fox Chapel goalie Joe Rattner held the potent Golden Lions’ offense scoreless through two frames, despite 23 shots from Greensburg Salem.

Greensburg Salem capitalized on the powerplay in the third period, however, scoring a pair of goals on the man advantage. Less than five minutes into the period, Carter Cherok scored on a rebound after an initial shot hit teammate Sam Spigarelli. With 5:30 left in the frame, the Golden Lions struck again on the PP, as Colten Humphrey’s cross-ice pass deflected off a stick in the slot and past Rattner. The Foxes held off the Golden Lions in the closing minutes, though, to secure the victory.

Rattner earned the win in net, making 36 stops, while Quentin Miske and Tyler Goldstein notched assists.

In the defeat for GS, Owen Tutich and Spigarelli collected assists, while Tristan Gonzales made 22 saves between the pipes.

The Golden Lions return to the ice next Monday, as they will host Hampton at the Kirk Nevin Arena in Greensburg.
