During his baseball career at Greater Latrobe, Logan Short emerged as not only one of the best players on his team, but one of the best in the entire WPIAL. Short, who had one of the best individual seasons in Wildcats’ history, is now contributing at Westmoreland County Community College. He’s in the limelight in this week's edition of the Westmoreland Alum Q&A.

Short didn’t factor significantly into the Greater Latrobe varsity team as a freshman in 2019, as the Wildcats went 8-12 overall, including just 2-8 in the section, failing to qualify for the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs.

The following season, Short appeared poised to become a contributor, but the season was cancelled as a result of COVID.

Back on the diamond in 2021, Short played in every contest, posting a .400 batting average and eight RBIs. His play helped GL compile a record of 13-9, including 5-4 in section play. The Wildcats made the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, and upset Plum before falling to Peters Township in the quarterfinals.

In his senior year, Short posted a robust .537 average, along with four home runs and 23 RBIs. The Wildcats went 12-8, including 8-2 in section play, but came up short against Thomas Jefferson in the WPIAL 5A first round.

Following his graduation, Short opted to join the baseball team at Westmoreland County Community College for the 2023 season. Playing at catcher and first base, Short appeared in 32 games, hitting .346 with a home run, 24 RBIs, and 20 runs. Collectively, the Wolfpack went 10-25, and lost to Community College of Allegheny County in the WPCC Conference Championship.

This season, Short has played in all 29 games, hitting .305 with a home run, a dozen RBIs, and 13 runs scored. WCCC has compiled a mark of 8-22 overall.

Logan set aside time to answer questions about the biggest adjustment to the college game, his favorite memory during his time at Greater Latrobe, and a little-known fact about himself.

Q: How have you evaluated your performance so far this season?

A: I started off the first half of the season slow, but I'm working hard and I'm back where I want to be. Overall, I feel I'm having a pretty good season.

Q: What are your best attributes defensively at catcher?

A: I feel like my receiving and blocking are the best parts of my defense.

Q: What was the biggest adjustment to the college game?

A: The biggest adjustment I had to make was getting used to the pitch clock. Everything is faster paced, and it is harder to control the pace of the game with it.

Q: What team and individual goals did you set for this season?

A: We knew we were going to struggle this year as a first-year DII JUCO program in a tough region, so one of our goals was to make the playoffs. One of my individual goals this season was to be more of a leader on the field.

Q: Which of your current teammates did you have relationships with prior to WCCC?

A: The only person I knew going into this season was Tony Massari. I played with Tony all through high school.

Q: WCCC head coach Mike Draghi is one of the most accomplished coaches in the area. What are his best qualities?
