Burrell finally got over the Freeport-hump on Tuesday.

After losing to the Yellowjackets twice in the regular season and then in the WPIAL championship, the Bucs finally tasted victory with a 2-1 win in the PIAA 2A girls soccer semifinals at Fox Chapel. The triumph sends Burrell to the state championship for the first time in program history.

The teams didn't waste any time finding the back of the net as Katie Koheler headed in a corner kick from Eva Wilson to put the Bucs on top 1-0. But only 15 seconds later, Freeport's Cam Woods booted a shot towards frame from about 25 yards away. Burrell goalkeeper Leah Waldsmith stumbled trying to make the save and the ball went into the back of the net to knot the contest at 1-1.

The game-winning goal came in the 29th minute as Burrell's Kendall Coury denied a Freeport clearing attempt in the box. The ball careened off of her right foot and rolled over to Makiah Buchak who tapped it in to make it 2-1.

Waldsmith, who finished with eight saves, made the small lead stand in the second half to preserve the victory for the Bucs.

Burrell (15-7-2) will face District 12 champion Archbishop Wood (14-6-1) in the PIAA 2A title game at 7 p.m. Friday at Northeastern York High School in Manchester. Archbishop Wood defeated Northwestern Lehigh in penalty kicks in the other semifinal.

With Tuesday's victory, Burrell snapped a seven-game losing streak to Freeport in the series while also snapping the Yellowjackets 20-game winning streak overall.
