The Westmoreland Sports Network has learned that Derry Area head football coach Vince Skillings has been relieved of his duties for the remainder of the season.

No official reason was released and Athletic Director Brett Miller said the school district will not comment on personnel matters.

Since taking over following the departure of Tim Sweeney in 2020, Skillings has posted a 2-10 record which includes an 0-7 mark this season. Last week, the Trojans lost to East Allegheny 68-0.

Skillings, a 1977 Derry Area graduate, is arguably the most decorated athlete in school history. He was an All-State running back and defensive back at DA while also capturing a state track and field championship. Skillings went on to play at Ohio State University before he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 1981 NFL Draft.

Derry Area will host Burrell on Friday on Senior Night. It is not known who will serve as the head coach in Skillings' absence although Miller is expected to be on the sideline.
