Westmoreland County girls basketball results from Thursday January 20, 2022:
Derry Area 58 Valley 21
Derry Area senior Tiana Moracco broke the schools all-time scoring record tallying 29 points leading the Trojans to a 58-21 Section 1-4A victory at Valley. Moracco broke the previous record of 1,047 points which was established by Lindsay Dixon who played from 1999-2002. Moracco now has 1,054 points with seven regular season games remaining. Samantha Gruska also had 11 points for third place Derry Area (7-6, 4-3).
Greater Latrobe 76 Woodland Hills 65
Despite a late rally attempt by Woodland Hills, Greater Latrobe held on to win a high-scoring Section 4-5A contest 76-65 at home. The Wolverines, trailing 53-35 after three, put up 30 points in the fourth quarter to make things interesting but the Wildcats kept pace with them, scoring 23 of their own to close out the game. Elle Snyder poured in 20 points for first place Greater Latrobe (9-2, 5-0). Teammates Camille Dominick and Emma Blair scored 18 and 16 points respectively. Top player Anna Rafferty injured her knee in the third quarter and did not return.
Norwin 46 Shaler 36
Shaler hung around but Norwin was able to come through with a 46-36 victory in Section 1-6A play. Three players finished in double-figures for the Knights (10-4, 7-1) with Brianna Zajicek and Lauren Palangio each scoring 11 points and Chloe Lukondi finished with 10.
Seneca Valley 48 Penn-Trafford 42
Penn-Trafford was ahead 26-19 at halftime but squandered the lead in the second half in a Section 1-6A loss to Seneca Valley at home. The Raiders outscored the Warriors 13-9 in the third quarter and completed the comeback in the fourth, holding a 16-7 edge. Lauren Marton came in with 11 points to lead Penn-Trafford (6-7, 4-4).
Greensburg Salem 35 Franklin Regional 25
Greensburg Salem captured a Section 4-5A victory over visiting Franklin Regional in a low-scoring game 35-25. Carrissa Caldwell's nine points topped the Golden Lions (13-2, 4-1) who remain tied with McKeesport for second place in the section. Brook Schirmer also scored nine points to pace the Panthers (5-9, 1-6).
Highlands 52 Burrell 32
Burrell was outscored 29-17 in the first half and couldn't recover in a 52-32 defeat at Highlands in Section 1-4A action. The Buccaneers fall to 1-12, 1-5.
