Franklin Regional scored four goals in a five-minute span late in the second period and early into the third to take complete command, as the Panthers bested Mars Area 6-0 on Monday at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont.
The victorious Panthers improved to 4-3-0, with eight points in PIHL Class AA. The Fightin’ Planets, meanwhile, dropped to 2-5-0, and remained with four points.
Senior forward Matty Knizner was the star for Franklin Regional, as he registered four goals, while Luke Lavrich assisted on all of his tallies. Nolan Shilling posted the shutout in net, as he recorded 18 saves.
The lone goal of the first period came courtesy of Knizner, as he beat Mars Area freshman goalie Carter Gallagher less than six minutes into the contest.
That score held until late in the second, as Knizner and Max Williams found the back of the net just 41 seconds apart to increase the FR lead to 3-0 at the second period intermission.
Knizner struck twice more in the first 80 seconds of the third, the latter of which came on the powerplay. Nicholas Matus capped the scoring with a marker with less than six minutes left.
In addition to the prolific efforts by Knizner and Lavrich, Matus and Williams each posted a goal and an assist, while Luke Anderchak contributed two helpers.
In the defeat, Gallagher made 26 stops in his first varsity action.
Both squads will return to the ice next Monday, as Franklin Regional will travel to play Meadville Area at 7:45. Conversely, Mars will host Penn-Trafford at 9 p.m.
