The battle of the unbeatens went in favor of Greensburg Salem, as the Golden Lions scored the first three goals and never relinquished the lead in their 7-4 win against Norwin on Tuesday at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont.
With the victory, Greensburg Salem improved to 4-0-0, and moved into a tie with Fox Chapel Area atop the Class A Blue Division with eight points. Norwin, meanwhile, dropped to 3-1-1, and is in third in the division with six points.
Although the opening period was scoreless for more than 10 minutes, the Golden Lions struck first, courtesy of Owen Tutich. Luke Dieter added another goal less than two minutes later, and Tutich then notched his second tally to stake GS to a 3-0 lead in the first.
The Knights battled back within striking distance, though, as Alex Thomas scored on a spectacular individual effort to put Norwin on the board late in the first. Less than three minutes into the second period, Joe Vecchio netted his 10th goal, which leads Class A, to pull the Knights within a goal.
Dieter scored his second goal near the midway point of the second period, and after Dom Cerilli notched a powerplay goal to bring the Knights back within one, Dieter completed the hat trick with a powerplay marker to put GS ahead 5-3 after two periods.
The Golden Lions added two insurance goals in the third, as Sam Spiganelli and Carter Cherok found the back of the net. Mario Cavallaro scored in the final minute for Norwin to account for the final margin.
In addition to Dieter’s three goals, Tutich posted two goals and an assist, while Hunter Webb, Colten Humphrey, and Chase Kushner each contributed two assists. Tristan Gonzales earned the win between the pipes, making 13 saves.
In the setback, Thomas and Cerilli each had a goal and an assist for the Knights, while Sean Hanley dished out two assists. Owen Burmeister took the loss, making 30 stops in net.
While the Golden Lions remain on the road for a matchup against Westmont Hilltop on Nov. 3, the Knights will host Plum on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
