Westmoreland County high school wrestling match recaps from Wednesday December 13th, 2023:
Kiski Area 30 Burrell 12 (Girls) WATCH BROADCAST
For the first time in the history of the schools, the Kiski Area and Burrell girls teams competed against one another on the mat with the Cavaliers winning the inaugural match 30-12. All of the bouts were determined by pin or forfeit. Earning falls for the Cavaliers were Kamdyn Pitts (100), Kara Dilts (130), Ava Golding (136), Alyssa Tresco (142) and Alyssa Perona (148). Ella Campbell (106) and Kendra Lewandowski (118) each claimed forfeit victories for the Bucs.
Burrell 42 Kiski Area 21 WATCH BROADCAST
A strong finish by Kiski Area wasn't enough as Burrell topped the rival Cavaliers 42-21 in a non-section match. With Burrell leading 12-9 through four weights, the Buccaneers reeled off six straight victories including pins from Jacob Stewart (133), Julian Bertucci (139), Calio Zanella (145) and Cooper Hornack (152). Nico Zanella and Isaac Lacinski each finished the run with wins by decision. A fall by Kiski Area's Abrahm Taylor at 189 pounds followed by a pair of decisions from teammates Cooper Roscosky and Ryder Ekas set the final. Burrell (2-0) has now won back-to-back meetings against Kiski Area (1-5). The Bucs will travel to Valley next Wednesday while the Cavaliers will host the Kiski Area duals on Saturday.
Derry Area 66 Valley 6
Just five bouts were wrestled in Derry Area's 66-6 section victory at Valley. Registering pins for the Trojans were Anthony Mucci (114), Brett Klim (127), Zander Nuttall (139) and Mason Horwat (152). Valley's Josue Martinez won by fall over Giovanni Beatrice in the second period at 133. The Trojans (5-2) will face rival Greater Latrobe on Monday at home while the Vikings (0-1) welcomes Burrell next Wednesday.
Frazier 42 Southmoreland 33
The first 10 bouts were decided by pinfall with Frazier claiming seven of those victories in a 42-33 triumph at Southmoreland in a section contest. Micha McGeary (121), Kashton Bish (145) and Shawn Hollis (160) all won by fall for the Scotties while Jacob Govern defeated Conner Reams by a 5-3 decision at heavyweight. Frazier gave up forfeits at 107 and 114 pounds. Southmoreland (4-3) will compete in the NursePro Plus Tournament in West Virginia on Saturday while the Commodores (4-2) wrestle at Belle Vernon next Wednesday.
Mt. Pleasant 48 Elizabeth Forward 9
Nick Stabile started the match with a second period fall for Mount Pleasant as the Vikings cruised to a 48-9 victory over visiting Elizabeth Forward in a section match. Dylan Pitzer also earned a pin in just 24 seconds at 285 pounds. In addition to Stabile and Pitzer, Jamison Poklembo (152) and Ty Hornick (172) claimed victories by decision. The Vikings (5-2) will compete in the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius on Friday and Saturday while the Warriors (0-2) host Southmoreland next Wednesday.
Ligonier Valley 36 Greensburg Salem 36
Ligonier Valley edged Greensburg Salem by the ninth tiebreaking criteria (most near fall points) after the teams finished the match tied at 36-36. Aiden Mulheren (145), Jake Mundorff (172) and Lucas Krieger (215) collected pins for the Rams (1-6) while Nick Reinhart (121) Jordan Anker (152) and Gabriel Doppleheur (160) claimed falls for the Golden Lions (0-2). Ligonier Valley will participate in the Doug Conroy Memorial duals at Ringgold on Saturday while Greensburg Salem wrestles Riverview next Wednesday.
