About the Jayhawks: Kymon’e Brown had another prolific outing and Jeannette’s rushing attack was potent in guiding the Jayhawks to a 29-23 upset win against No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic at Norwin High School last Friday. Brown anchored the run game with 23 carries for 126 yards and a score, and he added 7-of-14 passing for 140 yards and another TD through the air. Additionally, Nick Mendoza compiled 79 yards and a score, while Jayce Powell added five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Majhi Sanders also notched a rushing touchdown for the No. 13 Jayhawks. Brown’s 1-yard TD run in the third quarter put Jeannette in the lead for good, sparking 16 unanswered points for the Jayhawks. For the year, Brown has thrown for 1,680 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and he’s rushed 143 times for 1,239 yards, scoring 15 times. Powell, meanwhile, has posted 50 receptions spanning 892 yards, and he’s also notched 15 touchdowns. The Jayhawks hold an advantage of 357-319 in scoring margin for the season.
About the Rangers: Fort Cherry edged No. 9 Cornell 27-20 last week. Rangers QB Matt Sieg, a Penn State commit, rushed 29 times for 174 yards and three scores, while he hit on 7-of-16 throws for 64 yards, with one TD and one interception. His top target was Braydon Cook, who caught five passes for 41 yards, while Shane Cornali hauled in a 12-yard TD pass. Ryan Huey added four carries for 31 yards for the Rangers. On the year, Sieg has rushed 181 times for 1,495 yards, scoring 24 touchdowns, while he’s completed 67-of-108 throws for 1,022 yards, including 19 touchdowns and four interceptions. Sieg, a junior, has achieved a 1000-yard passing and 1000-yard rushing campaign in each of his first three years. Cornali has amassed 29 receptions for 562 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Cook has 25 grabs for 315 yards. Huey has rushed 119 times for 651 yards and 11 scores, while Eli Salvini had added 49 carries for 458 yards. The Rangers boast a scoring advantage of 491-111. Tanner Garry is the head coach of Fort Cherry.
About the Matchup: The winner advances to the WPIAL Class 1A Championship, and will play either No. 2 Clairton or third-seeded Bishop Canevin. Fort Cherry claimed its first WPIAL crown last year, while Jeannette has 10 WPIAL titles. The teams have not met since prior to 2003.
