Greater Latrobe tops Hempfield; Frazier wins at Mount Pleasant

Westmoreland County high school wrestling match recaps from Wednesday, January 4th 2023:

Latrobe 45 Hempfield 28   WATCH MATCH BROADCAST

Corey Boerio's overtime pin of Eli Binakonsky at 215 pounds helped Greater Latrobe to a 45-28 victory at Hempfield Area in Section 4-3A. Binakonsky held a 3-1 lead thanks to an escape and takedown in the second period but Boerio tied it with a reversal late in the third. In OT, Boerio took down Binakonsky near the edge of the mat and turned it into a pin to clinch the victory for Greater Latrobe (5-1, 2-0). Other Wildcats earning pins were Luke Willochell (114), Vinny Kilkeary (127), Jacob Braun (133), Brock Mears (189) and Wyatt Held (285). Mears pin was significant as his mother, Mary, was recently released from the hospital after suffering a heart attack. Mark Mears, the Wildcats head coach, skipped the match to remain home with his wife. Eli Carr (145) and Lucas Kapusta (160) both picked up falls for Hempfield Area (5-3, 1-1).

Penn-Trafford 47 Thomas Jefferson 27

Five Penn-Trafford wrestlers posted falls in a 47-27 triumph at Thomas Jefferson in a Section 3-3A contest. Hayden Coy (133), Tasso Whipple (172), Adam Hall (189), Owen Ott (215) and Joe Enick (285) all registered pins for the Warriors (4-7, 2-0).

Franklin Regional 49 Ringgold 18

Franklin Regional secured victories in 10 bouts as the Panthers downed Ringgold 49-18 in Section 3-3A action. Scoring falls for Franklin Regional (5-0, 2-0) were Matt Morcos (114), Tyler Kapusta (121), Justin Bass (133), Roman Colangelo (152), Gavyn Beck (160) and Henry Patts (172).

Kiski Area 48 Armstrong 21

Kiski Area earned a 48-21 victory over visiting Armstrong in a Section 1-3A match. Clayton Cramer (107), Noah Henry (114), Ryan Klingensmith (127), Logan Bechtold (152), Brayden Miller (160) and Mark Gray (172) all had pins for the Cavaliers (6-7, 2-0).

Frazier 38 Mount Pleasant 33

Mount Pleasant led 22-15 through the first seven bouts but Frazier reeled off four straight victories and held on for a 38-33 important win in Section 2-2A. After pins by Greg Shaulis and Jamison Poklembo gave the Vikings the seven point lead, Frazier's Jonah Erdely responded with a first period fall at 152 pounds. Ryan Celaschi won by technical fall in the next bout followed by two straight pins from Jackson Angelo and Rune Lawrence which clinched the match for the Commodores (5-2, 3-0) putting them ahead 38-22 with only two bouts left. Joseph Longhi (114), and Dylan Pitzer (285) also registered falls for Mount Pleasant (3-5, 2-1).

Burrell 61 Derry Area 9

Burrell remained undefeated in Section 6-2A with a 61-9 victory at Derry Area. In the most anticipated bout of the night, the Bucs' Cameron Baker pinned the Trojans' Anthony Mucci with 15 seconds left in the first period at 107 pounds. In addition to Baker, Julian Bertucci (121), Calio Zanella (127), Cooper Hornack (133), Anthony Barbieri, Nico Zanella (160) and Cameron Martin (189) all registered pins for Burrell (3-0, 2-0). Leo Filler won by fall at heavyweight for Derry Area (4-5, 1-2).

Indiana 51 Ligonier Valley 11

Ligonier Valley could only muster wins in two bouts, falling to Indiana 51-11 in a Section 6-2A match. Bruce Krieger won by technical fall, 15-0, at 139 pounds for the Rams (3-5, 1-2) while heavyweight Logan Mulheren received a forfeit. Indiana improves to (3-2, 3-0).
