Derry earns important section victory, Belle Vernon blows out West Mifflin

Westmoreland County girls basketball results from Thursday January 13, 2022:

Derry Area 44 Burrell 41

Mara Lewis and Tiana Moracco each hit a foul shot in the last 14 seconds of the game to give Derry Area a 44-41 Section 1-4A victory at Burrell. Tiana Moracco poured in 28 points for the Trojans (6-5, 3-3). She's now just three points away from 1,000 for her career. Samantha Gruska finished with 14 points for Derry Area.

Belle Vernon 73 West Mifflin 44

Four players reached double-figures for Belle Vernon in a 73-44 Section 3-4A win over visiting West Mifflin. Presleigh Colditz racked up 15 points for the Leopards with teammate Jenna Dawson finishing with 12. Farrah Reader (11), and Tessa Rodriguez (10) also put in double-digits for first place Belle Vernon (10-2, 5-0).

Norwin 56 Butler 34

Ahead 15-11 after one, Norwin pulled away from Butler in the second quarter going into halftime leading 30-14 and went on to a 56-34 triumph at Butler in Section 1-6A play. Maggie Race tossed in 15 points to pace the Knights (8-3, 5-1).

Penn-Trafford 38 Shaler 28

Penn-Trafford had a big second quarter, outscoring Shaler 15-3, to help the Warriors to a 38-28 Section 1-6A victory at home. Olivia Pepple and Maura Suman had 14 and 10 points respectively to guide Penn-Trafford (6-5, 4-2).

Mars 43 Kiski Area 31

The game was tied at 21-21 at halftime but Mars pulled away in the second half to top Kiski Area 43-31 in Section 2-5A. Both Abbie Johns and Cora Coleman tallied nine points for the Cavaliers (5-7, 1-4).

Greater Latrobe 63 Gateway 35

Greater Latrobe raced out to an early 18-5 lead and cruised to a 63-35 Section 4-5A victory against visiting Gateway. The Wildcats (8-2, 4-0) outscored the Gators in every quarter. Four players finished in double-figures for Greater Latrobe with Elle Snyder's 17 points leading the way. Anna Rafferty added 14 points while Camille Dominick and Emma Blair had 11 and 10 points respectively.

Deer Lakes 56 Valley 23

Valley fell behind quickly and succumbed to the poor start, losing to Deer Lakes 56-23 in Section 1-4A play. Leading the Vikings (1-8, 0-3) was Aelan Wyley who scored eight points.

Elizabeth Forward 79 Ligonier Valley 40

Ligonier Valley trailed 58-25 at the halftime break and dropped a Section 3-4A match up against Elizabeth Forward 79-40. Lyla Barr ended with 10 points for the Rams (0-11, 0-5).

Greensburg Central Catholic 53 Apollo-Ridge 37

Bailey Kuhns and Mya Morgan had big games helping Greensburg Central Catholic to a 53-37 Section 4-2A win at Apollo-Ridge. The Centurions trailed 15-13 after one but quickly turned the tide in the second quarter, going in front 28-21 at the break. Kuhns tallied 17 points for GCC (7-2, 3-0) while Morgan finished with 16.

Plum 44 Yough 36

Autumn Matthews scored 17 points for Yough but the Cougars dropped a non-section match to Plum 44-36 at home. Yough is now 3-9, 1-3.
