Staked to an early 14-0 lead, Penn-Trafford fended off a late surge to beat Greater Latrobe 20-13 in a Class 5A Big East Conference clash. With the win, the Warriors wrap up the conference slate in second place at 5-1, while the Wildcats dipped to 2-4 but remain in the hunt for a wild card spot. Tasso Whipple rushed 31 times for 160 yards and a score for the Warriors, Derek Carr snagged a pick-six and added 46 yards rushing, and Jack Miller converted two field goals. Andy Tatsch registered a 52-yard interception return score for the Wildcats, while John Wetzel notched a 1-yard TD run.
Franklin Regional 29 Armstrong 26 (FR: 7-3; ARM: 2-8) - WATCH BROADCAST
Franklin Regional used a frantic rally, scoring twice in the final two minutes, to edge Armstrong 29-26 in the Class 5A Big East Conference. The Panthers, who had already clinched the playoffs and were locked into third place in the Big East Conference, improved to 4-2, while the River Hawks finished winless at 0-6. Kyle Dupill rushed 24 times for 200 yards for FR, including a touchdown. Trailing by two scores, Franklin Regional’s Chase Lemke connected with Elijah Bennett on a 33-yard TD, and the Panthers recovered the subsequent onside kick. That set up Lemke’s 2-yard touchdown run to give FR the come-from-behind triumph.
Greensburg Salem 28 Southmoreland 21 (GS: 7-3; SM: 7-3) - WATCH BROADCAST
A pair of touchdown connections from Brody Chismar to Dom Rosensteel in the second half propelled host Greensburg Salem to a 28-21 victory against Southmoreland in a Class 3A Interstate Conference showdown. Despite the outcome, the Scotties secured a playoff berth with a mark of 3-2, while the Golden Lions bolstered their wild card consideration with a conference record of 3-2. The Golden Lions’ defense created five turnovers, including a pick-six by Peyton Chismar to give GS a 14-6 advantage. Southmoreland responded with a TD run by Cam Phillips, who amassed 110 yards on the ground, to pull even at 14-14 before the pair of passing TDs sealed the win for the Golden Lions. Anthony Smith finished 12-of-27 for 138 yards, but had three interceptions, while Jackson Mickens caught six passes for 99 yards for the Scotties. Kai Brunot added 72 yards rushing for GS.
Yough 55 Derry Area 14 (YOU: 3-7; DA: 3-7) - WATCH BROADCAST
Raidon Kuroda produced a stellar performance in propelling host Yough to a 55-14 win against Derry Area in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Kuroda amassed 172 yards passing and three TDs, and he rushed for 134 yards and three more scores for the Cougars. Anthony Sacco and Kaden Weiers produced the touchdowns for the Trojans. As a result, Yough finished the conference ledger at 1-4, while DA wrapped up at 0-5.
Mount Lebanon 42 Norwin 20 (MTL: 3-7; NOR: 2-8)
Norwin had no answer for Mount Lebanon QB Patrick Smith, as the Blue Devils cruised to a 42-20 win in Class 6A play. Smith threw for three touchdowns and added two more on the ground, staking Mount Lebanon to a 42-0 lead at the half. As a result, the Blue Devils clinched a playoff spot in 6A with a mark of 3-3, while the Knights wrapped up the ledger at 0-6.
Woodland Hills 24 Kiski Area 6 (WH: 8-2; KA: 4-6)
Kiski Area was held under wraps by the Woodland Hills defense, which notched a pick-six in leading the Wolverines to a 24-6 home win in Class 5A Big East Conference play. Already assured of the conference crown, the Wolverines moved to 6-0 in the conference, while the Cavaliers dipped to 2-4, but remain in the discussion for a wild card berth. The interception return score by Jayden Jones gave Woodland Hills the lead in the second quarter, and Carter Akins and Elijah Nesby added rushing scores for WH. The Cavaliers scored their lone TD on a pass from Carson Heinle to Landyn Artman. Heinle went 11-of-17 for 172 yards, while Landon Kucic compiled 53 yards on the ground for KA.
Trinity 31 Belle Vernon Area 21 (TRN: 5-5; BVA: 4-4)
Although Belle Vernon Area held a third-quarter advantage, host Trinity scored the final 17 points to claim a 31-21 win. As a result, the Hillers clinched second place in the Class 4A Big Six Conference at 4-1 and a postseason spot, while the Leopards dipped to 3-2 and must hope for a wild card selection. Hillers QB Jonah Williamson threw for 139 yards and a pair of TDs, while he added 74 yards and another score as a rusher. Kole Doppelheuer rushed for two scores for BVA, while QB Curty Wade threw for a touchdown and added 112 yards on the ground.
Elizabeth Forward 56 Mount Pleasant Area 26 (EF: 7-3; MP: 5-5)
Despite a bevy of big plays, Mount Pleasant Area fell to Elizabeth Forward 56-26 in Class 3A Interstate Conference play. Thus, the Warriors finished the conference slate at 5-0, capturing the title, while the Vikings dipped to 3-2 but still clinched a playoff bid. Without starting QB Cole Chatfield and trailing 14-0, Vikings signalcaller Dane Firmstone hit a 65-yard TD pass to Jacob Kitz, and Jarett Garn followed with an interception and subsequent touchdown run. After another EF score, Garn responded with a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown to pull the Vikes back within two points. The Warriors extended the lead briefly, but Firmstone and Garn hooked up on a 72-yard touchdown pass early in the third to make it 28-26, but EF scored the final 28 points of the contest.
Deer Lakes 56 Burrell 0 (DL: 8-2; BUR: 2-8)
Burrell had no answer for Deer Lakes, which scored on all nine of its possessions in a 56-0 rout of the Buccaneers in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference tilt. Lancers QB Jake Fleischer went 12-of-13 passing for 166 yards and four scores. While homestanding DL is postseason bound as the runner up from the conference at 5-1, the loss dropped Burrell to 2-4 and likely eliminates the Buccaneers from wild card consideration.
Highlands 45 Valley 20 (HIGH: 5-4; VAL: 0-10)
Apollo-Ridge 31 Ligonier Valley 28 (AR: 1-8; LV: 3-7)
A fourth-quarter field goal proved the difference as Ligonier Valley fell to Apollo-Ridge 31-28 in a Class 2A Allegheny Conference tilt. In the setback, John Jablunovsky compiled 194 yards rushing and four scores for the Rams. Meanwhile, Alexander Clawson threw for 227 yards and Gabe Suman booted the winning kick for the Vikings, who moved to 1-5 in the conference, matching LV’s record.
Greensburg Central Catholic 20 Leechburg 16 (GCC: 7-2; LBG: 8-2)
A pair of touchdown runs by Samir Crosby in the second half capped Greensburg Central Catholic’s rally, as the Centurions edged host Leechburg 20-16 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. As a result, the Centurions finished the conference ledger in second place at 6-1, while the Blue Devils fell to third place at 5-2 in a matchup of playoff-bound squads. Crosby compiled 149 yards on the ground and 146 yards and a touchdown through the air, scoring on TD runs of 11 and 19 yards on the first two GCC drives after halftime. Leechburg’s Jayden Floyd produced 143 yards passing and added a dozen carries for 50 yards and a score.
Cornell 41 Monessen 6 (CORN: 8-2; MON: 7-3)
Hempfield Area 41 Gateway 21 (HEMP: 4-6; GATE: 3-7)
After trailing 21-0 on the road, Hempfield Area scored 41 unanswered points in claiming a 41-21 win against Gateway in a nonconference contest. Spartans signalcaller Dom Detruf compiled 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air in the comeback. Gateway, which received 184 yards rushing and two TDs from Amari Gans, remains in contention for a wild card in Class 5A.
