With just three weeks remaining in the WPIAL football regular season, the stretch run has arrived. At this point, nearly every game on the slate has playoff implications. This week also features three all-Westmoreland battles. Here’s a detailed examination of all of the county games in Week Seven.
Franklin Regional (6-1, 3-0) at Penn-Trafford (5-2, 2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: Kyle Dupill continued his incredible season for Franklin Regional, as he rushed for 272 yards and four scores to lead the Panthers to a 51-14 win at Fox Chapel Area in a nonconference clash last week. Chase Lemke was also stellar for FR, as the signalcaller amassed 225 yards and three TDs through the air. For the year, Dupill has rushed 177 times for 1,272 yards, which ranks second in the WPIAL, and he’s scored 12 touchdowns. Lemke has completed 53-of-103 throws for 962 yards, with 13 TDs and six interceptions. Tight end Mac Bresnahan has caught 16 passes for 360 yards, while Elijah Bennett has added 10 grabs for 289 yards. FR is averaging 31.8 points per game, the most in the Class 5A Big East Conference.
About the Warriors: Tasso Whipple produced another sterling stat line, as he rushed 28 times for 249 yards as Penn-Trafford prevailed at Gateway 32-13 in the Class 5A Big East Conference one week ago. With the win, the Warriors ascended to 2-1 in the conference, while the Gators dropped to 2-2. Jack Weishaar added two touchdown receptions from QB Jonny Lovre, who also scored on a rushing TD for PT. On the year, Whipple has amassed 128 carries for 1,161 yards, which is fourth most in the WPIAL, along with 13 receptions for 213 yards and eight total scores. Quarterback Jonny Lovre has hit on 75-of-126 passes for 944 yards, with eight touchdowns and six picks, while Jack Weishaar has posted 26 receptions for 345 yards, scoring six times. Permitting 15.0 points per game, PT paces the Big East Conference in scoring defense.
About the Matchup: Franklin Regional is currently tied atop the Class 5A Big East Conference standings, while Penn-Trafford is alone in third. Last year, the Warriors prevailed 27-14 in the regular-season finale.
Greensburg Salem (4-3, 0-2) at Derry Area (3-4, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: Mount Pleasant Area scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to edge homestanding Greensburg Salem 28-21 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference a week ago. With the contest scoreless into the third quarter, GS struck first on a 21-yard TD pass from Brody Chismar to Keegan Young. Peyton Chismar connected with Dom Rosensteel on a pair of TDs, as he paced GS with seven receptions for 103 yards. For the campaign, Brody Chismar has thrown for 334 yards, with four TDs and three interceptions, and he’s added 291 yards on the ground, while Peyton Chismar has contributed 322 yards passing, along with four touchdowns and one pick, as well as 104 yards rushing. Kai Brunot has notched 49 carries for 324 yards, while Brady Smith has registered 67 attempts for 262 yards. With five touchdowns, Rosensteel paces GS. Despite three straight losses, the Golden Lions boast a scoring margin of 174-138.
About the Trojans: Charlie Nigut scored four times in leading Elizabeth Forward to a dominant 56-14 win at Derry Area in a Class 3A Interstate Conference matchup. The Trojans received a pair of touchdowns from Max Doherty, who scored on a 6-yard run and an 11-yard reception from Anthony Sacco. Despite missing time with injury, Damauri Robinson still leads the Trojans with 73 carries for 525 yards and eight touchdowns. On the season, DA has been outpaced 161-121.
About the Matchup: The Golden Lions and Trojans are two of the three teams still winless in Class 3A Interstate Conference play. Last year, Derry Area claimed a 26-21 victory in a nonconference battle.
Southmoreland (6-1, 2-0) at Mount Pleasant Area (4-3, 2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Scotties: Southmoreland exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter to outlast Yough 53-34 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last Friday. The Scotties were led by Cam Phillips, who compiled 131 yards rushing and three scores, and Anthony Smith, who threw for 215 yards and three TDs. For 2024, Smith has hit on 82-of-148 throws for 1,491 yards, with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Elliott Premus has been his top target, as he’s caught 36 passes for 749 yards, scoring nine times. Phillips paces the ground game with 69 carries for 536 yards, while Ethan Shawley has notched 44 rushes for 307 yards, each scoring seven total touchdowns. Averaging 39.8 points per game, the Scotties have the top scoring offense in the Class 3A Interstate Conference.
About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 90-yard kickoff return by Garrett Eicher, as the Vikings edged Greensburg Salem 28-21 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last week. In the fourth, the Vikings strung together consecutive scores, a TD pass from Cole Chatfield to Eicher and a Brody Hutter run. Although the host Golden Lions pulled even at 14-14, Eicher’s kickoff return score gave the Vikings a lead they didn’t relinquish. Chatfield finished 9-of-14 for 156 yards and a score. On the campaign, Hutter has rushed 74 times for 422 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns. Jarrett Garn has 10 receptions for a team-best 213 yards, 56 carries for 367 yards, and four touchdowns, four field goals, and 18 PATs. Chatfield has completed 32-of-60 throws for 528 yards, with three TDs and four interceptions. The Vikings have a scoring margin of 166-164 on the year, playing in five games decided by one score.
About the Matchup: The Scotties and Vikings are two of the three teams in the Class 3A Interstate Conference that sit atop the standings at 2-0. Last year, Southmoreland rolled to a 40-3 blowout win.
Jeannette (4-3, 1-3) at Brentwood (4-3, 3-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Samir Crosby had a monster performance, factoring into five touchdowns, as Greensburg Central Catholic bested Jeannette 44-27 in Class 1A Eastern Conference play last week. In the setback, Jeannette’s Kymon’e Brown had a stellar effort of his own, as he compiled 17 carries for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 114 yards and two scores through the air on 11-of-19 attempts. Jayce Powell added 80 yards receiving for Jeannette. About the Spartans: Brentwood outlasted host Riverview 42-35 last week in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Cedric Davis was a boss in the victory, as the Spartans QB completed 14-of-25 throws for 249 yards and five touchdowns. Forrest Betz was the biggest beneficiary of the passing attack, as he caught nine passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns. Despite limited playing time at QB, Davis has hit on 31-of-69 throws for 557 yards, with eight touchdowns. Betz has compiled 31 receptions for 582 yards and nine touchdowns, all team-highs, while Daysaun Spencer has 16 grabs for 361 yards and seven TDs. Nick Caponi is the head coach of Brentwood.
About the Matchup: While Jeannette is in a tie for fifth in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, Brentwood is deadlocked for third. The most recent meeting took place in the WPIAL Class A playoffs in 2014, as the Jayhawks rolled to a 50-19 win.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic (5-2, 3-0) at Norwin (2-5, 0-3) – 7 p.m.
About the Vikings: Central Catholic notched its fifth win in a row last week, a 56-7 drubbing of host Shaler Area in a nonconference game. Quarterback Jy’Aire Walls completed 13-of-15 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns. Maximilian Roman caught five passes for 145 yard and a touchdown, while Bradley Gompers, a Duke commit, snagged four receptions for 65 yards and three TDs. Jayden Alexander registered seven carries for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the campaign, Walls has completed 69-of-119 throws for 1,334 yards, with 14 touchdowns and four picks, and he’s added six scores on the ground. Gompers has 412 yards receiving, Penn State commit Xxavier Thomas has 359 yards, and Roman has posted 272 yards. Averaging 38.7 points per game, the Vikings lead Class 6A by a wide margin. Ryan Lehmeier is the head coach of Pittsburgh Central Catholic.
About the Knights: Norwin fell into a 21-0 deficit, and a late rally came up short for the Knights in their 34-28 loss at Hempfield Area in Class 6A play last week. Despite not starting the game, Norwin QB Tristyn Tavares connected on 11-of-31 throws for 125 yards and a score, and he added a TD run. For the season, Tavares has hit on 65-of-134 passes for 817 yards, with four TDs, and he’s rushed 41 times for 300 yards and seven scores on the ground. Jake Knight is his top option through the air, as he’s registered 21 catches for 328 yards. Gio Rothrauff paces Norwin with 67 carries, which have spanned 248 yards. The Knights have dropped five straight contests, permitting 24 or more points in each of those setbacks.
About the Matchup: The Vikings lead Class 6A at 3-0, while the Knights are the lone remaining winless team in conference play. The previous meeting in 2021 was dominated by Central Catholic 50-0.
Hempfield Area (3-4, 2-2) at Seneca Valley (2-4, 2-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Spartans: Hempfield Area jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, and fended off a late rally to edge Norwin 34-28 in Class 6A play last week. Dom Detruf completed 6-of-17 throws for 144 yards and a score, while he added 88 yards and another TD on the ground for the Spartans. Aidan Stinebiser amassed 91 yards rushing and a score, while Jack Kopas caught three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. For the campaign, Stinebiser has rushed 125 times for 544 yards, caught a dozen passes for 161 yards, and scored five touchdowns. Detruf has hit on 93-of-174 throws for 1,105 yards, with nine touchdowns but 14 interceptions. Hempfield Area is allowing 34.1 points per game, the worst mark in Class 6A.
About the Raiders: Seneca Valley edged Canon-McMillan 31-30 last week in a crucial Class 6A contest a week ago. The host Raiders had a pair of 100-yard rushers in the victory, as Chase Mazanek notched 29 carries for 156 yards, while Cayden Parker had 19 carries for 118 yards and a score. On the season, Parker has compiled 86 carries for 440 yards, while Mazanek has contributed 55 carries for 324 yards. Quarterback Andrew Lobig has thrown for 345 yards, with three scores and three interceptions, while Brayden Wise has caught 13 passes for 151 yards. The Raiders have scored 98 points on the year, the fewest among Class 6A teams. Ron Butschle is the head man for Seneca Valley.
About the Matchup: Seneca Valley is currently in third place in Class 6A, a half-game ahead of Hempfield Area. In a nonconference meeting a year ago, the Raiders rolled to a 42-13 W.
Kiski Area (2-5, 1-3) at Armstrong (2-5, 0-3) – 7 p.m.
About the Cavaliers: Keyed by a strong rushing attack led by Landon Kucic, Kiski Area knocked off host Greater Latrobe 36-13 in the Class 5A Big East Conference last Friday. Kucic rushed 36 times for 131 yards and three scores for the Cavs, while QB Carson Heinle went 7-of-9 passing for 137 yards and a pair of TDs, and he added 104 yards rushing. Additionally, Aven Shirley produced three receptions for 95 yards, including two touchdowns. For the year, Kucic has registered 133 carries for 656 yards and 11 touchdowns. Carson Heinle has gone 76-of-123 for 1,063 yards passing, with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he’s added 68 carries for 325 yards on the ground. Aven Shirley paces KA with 33 receptions for 616 yards, including eight touchdowns. Despite the record, the Cavs have been narrowly outscored on the year, 180-172.
About the River Hawks: Armstrong fell 36-6 at Woodland Hills one week ago in the Class 5A Big East Conference. In the loss, River Hawks QB Jaydon Oliver went 17-of-27 for 218 yards, with a touchdown and two picks. Kyan Kline caught four passes for 63 yards. For the season, Oliver has thrown for 1,222 yards and a dozen touchdowns, along with 10 interceptions, while he’s posted 69 carries for 333 yards. Kline has snagged 32 receptions for 583 yards and a team-best seven touchdowns. The River Hawks have lost five straight, and have permitted an average of 36.5 points per game this season. Frank Fabian is the veteran head coach for Armstrong.
About the Matchup: Kiski Area is tied for fifth in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Armstrong is the lone winless team in conference play. Last season, the Cavaliers notched a 42-34 win in the regular-season finale when the teams competed in Class 4A.
Laurel Highlands (4-2, 1-1) at Belle Vernon Area (2-3, 1-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Mustangs: Laurel Highlands ousted Ringgold 21-6 last week in Class 4A Big Six Conference action. In the triumph, Antwan Black posted 17 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown, while QB Noah Lion went 5-of-14 for 38 yards and two touchdowns, along with an interception. For the year, Black, a Division I prospect, has rushed for 201 yards and hauled in 18 receptions for 199 yards, scoring four times. Parker Hoff leads the ground game with 43 attempts for 284 yards. Despite a winning record, the Mustangs have been outscored 144-124. Coach Rich Kolesar patrols the sidelines for Laurel Highlands.
About the Leopards: Belle Vernon Area scored 33 points in the opening quarter en route to a lopsided 68-21 win against Chartiers Valley in Class 4A Big Six Conference play. Kole Doppelheuer registered 10 carries for 126 yards and two scores, while Deaubre Lightfoot had a touchdown reception and a 60-yard punt return score for BVA. On the year, Doppelheuer has 13 grabs for 290 yards, 42 carries for 276 yards, and eight total scores. Signalcaller Curty Wade has hit on 33-of-60 passes for 491 yards, with five scores and four interceptions, and he’s rushed for 139 yards. BVA has been outpaced on the year by a margin of 135-126.
About the Matchup: The Mustangs and Leopards are among the four times tied at 1-1 in the Class 4A Big Six Conference. A year ago, Belle Vernon Area notched a 40-0 win. BVA head coach Matt Humbert is a Laurel Highlands grad.
Yough (2-5, 0-2) at Elizabeth Forward (4-3, 2-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Cougars: Southmoreland exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter to outlast Yough 53-34 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference last Friday. Aidan Shaffer has caught 16 passes for 312 yards, while Ryan Sarver has contributed 25 carries for 282 yards. With five straight setbacks, the Cougars have been outscored 189-146 on the campaign.

Grese, Connor Stokes, Anthony St. Angelo, and Brendan Stroschein have all eclipsed 100 yards receiving on the year. EF has outscored its adversaries by a margin of 273-153 this season. John DeMarco is the second-year head coach of Elizabeth Forward.

Burrell (2-5, 2-1) at Highlands (2-4, 1-3) – 7 p.m.
About the Buccaneers: Trey Coury had a game for the ages for Burrell, as he rushed 53 times for 266 yards and two scores, leading the Buccaneers to a 15-6 win at Valley a week ago. For the year, Coury has rushed 220 times for 1,047 yards, caught 11 passes spanning 113 yards, and has posted six touchdowns. Quarterback Stevie Hasson has connected on 26-of-58 throws for 294 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions, and he’s added 47 carries for 148 yards, scoring three times. Burrell is averaging just 11.0 points per contest, the lowest mark in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference.
About the Golden Rams: Highlands fell at Freeport Area 28-7 last week in a Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference tilt. Menage Lucas went 10-for-21 through the air for 151 yards and a score, but with two interceptions, and he added 20 carries for 75 yards. Montrell Johnson caught three passes for 52 yards, including the lone touchdown for Highlands. On the season, Lucas has passed for 872 yards and 10 touchdowns, while he’s compiled 798 yards rushing and has scored a dozen times. Johnson is the top receiver with 22 catches for 359 yards, and he’s found paydirt six times. In their two wins, the Golden Rams have scored a combined 117 points. Matt Bonislawski is at the helm of Highlands.
About the Matchup: Burrell currently resides in fourth place in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference, while Highlands is in fifth. In the most recent clash in 2021, the Golden Rams notched a dominant 56-7 victory.
East Allegheny (0-7, 0-4) at Valley (0-7, 0-3) – 7 p.m.
Ligonier Valley (3-4, 1-2) at South Park (6-1, 3-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Rams: A touchdown run by John Jablunovsky late in the fourth quarter broke a tie, giving Ligonier Valley a 20-14 win at Charleroi in a nonconference battle. Jablunovsky rushed 28 times for 184 yards and two scores for the Rams, while Bryce Vida added 104 yards and a score for LV. On the season, John Jablunovsky has posted 131 carries for 999 yards, scoring 12 times. Mark Jablunovsky, meanwhile, has produced 15 receptions for 364 yards, while Bowie Schreyer has completed 34-of-71 throws for 635 yards, along with seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The Rams have been outpaced 203-156 this season.
About the Eagles: South Park rolled to a 41-13 victory on the road against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart last Saturday in Class 2A Allegheny Conference play. Eric Doerue had a stellar outing, as he rushed 17 times for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Robert Lenzi failed to complete any of his five passes, but he rushed nine times for 83 yards and a score. On the season, Doerue has contributed 125 carries for 759 yards and 10 TDs, while Lenzi has thrown for 479 yards and five scores, and he’s added 583 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. During their five-game winning surge, the Eagles have posted a pair of shutouts. Head coach Brian Abbey patrols the sidelines for SP.
About the Matchup: South Park tops the Class 2A Allegheny Conference standings at 3-0, while Ligonier Valley is in fifth. The teams have not met since the Rams returned to the WPIAL in 2020.
Greensburg Central Catholic (4-2, 3-1) at Springdale (0-6, 0-4) – 7 p.m. at Burrell High School
About the Centurions: Samir Crosby had a monster performance, factoring into five touchdowns, as Greensburg Central Catholic bested Jeannette 44-27 in Class 1A Eastern Conference play last week. Crosby rushed 20 times for 150 yards and three scores on the ground, while he threw for 151 yards and two more TDs. Jerry Davis notched a 65-yard kickoff return score for GCC. On the season, Crosby has completed 50-of-89 attempts for 953 yards, with 13 touchdowns and two picks, and he’s rushed 103 times for 719 yards, scoring 13 touchdowns on the ground. Landon Honick has registered 23 grabs for 500 yards and seven TDs. The Centurions average 33.8 points per contest.
About the Dynamos: Springdale was decimated 70-0 last week against Clairton at Burrell High School in Class 1A Eastern Conference action. Through six games, the Dynamos have scored just six points, a touchdown by Nathan Gebauer. Conversely, Springdale has permitted 41 or more points in every tilt. Chad Walsh is the first-year head man for Springdale.
About the Matchup: GCC is tied for third in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while Springdale is one of two winless teams in conference play. A year ago, Greensburg Central Catholic smashed Springdale 60-14. With renovations taking place at their field, the Dynamos have used Burrell and Freeport Area as home venues this campaign.
Burgettstown (1-5, 0-3) at Monessen (6-1, 2-1) – 7 p.m.
Greater Latrobe (4-3, 1-3) at Pine-Richland (6-0, 4-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Wildcats: Greater Latrobe lost its second game in a row last week, as the Wildcats dropped a 36-13 affair to Kiski Area in the Class 5A Big East Conference. John Wetzel factored into both scores for GL, as he notched a 63-yard TD run and a 63-yard connection with Andy Tatsch. Alex Tatsch, who is out for the rest of the season with injury, still paces GL with 716 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. Wetzel has rushed 70 times for 630 yards, scoring six times, and he’s hit on 28-of-58 throws for 336 yards, with one touchdown but six interceptions. Brady Prohovic has registered 60 carries for 253 yards and four TDs. GL has outscored its foes 162-115 on the campaign.
About the Rams: Pine-Richland notched a critical 31-21 win at home against Penn Hills last week in Class 5A Northeast Conference play. Aaron “Oobi” Strader converted 8-of-15 throws for 179 yards and two touchdowns, and he added a rushing score. Maclane Miller rushed 32 times for 112 yards and a TD in the victory. For the year, Miller has rushed for 546 yards for the Rams, while Strader has amassed 961 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air. Lawrence Timmons is the top receiver for PR, with 16 grabs for 332 yards. The Rams have outpaced their opponents by a margin of 231-93 this year. Jon LeDonne is the decorated head coach of Pine-Richland.
About the Matchup: It’s a Class 5A nonconference showdown, as the Wildcats play in the Big East Conference, while the Rams reside in the Northeast Conference. The teams have not met since prior to 2003.
