Panthers battle Wildcats in Westmoreland clash; PT visits the Wolvarena; Norwin and Hempfield hit the road in Class 6A

After three weeks of exclusively nonconference action, the conference slate commences for many teams this weekend, including 11 of the 18 squads in Westmoreland County. Here’s a detailed examination of all of the games across the county in Week Three.

Franklin Regional (0-3) at Greater Latrobe (1-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: Franklin Regional was overmatched by Upper St. Clair 49-6 in the battle of the Panthers last Friday. Homestanding FR fell into a 42-0 deficit in the first half, with its lone score coming on a 5-yard run by Jet Taylor under the mercy rule. On the season, Taylor has posted 78 carries for 363 yards, and also paces the team with five receptions and two total touchdowns. Quarterback Dominick Devola has hit on 19-of-47 throws for 191 yards, with one score and two interceptions. FR has permitted an average of 40.6 points per contest.

About the Wildcats: Greater Latrobe was stifled by Norwin’s defense in a 35-0 home loss at Memorial Stadium one week ago. A week after scoring 42 points in three overtimes, the Wildcats were held off the scoreboard. AJ Yeboah compiled 49 yards rushing for GL. On the campaign, Yeboah has 42 rushes for 178 yards, while signalcaller Dom Scarton has completed 24-of-59 throws for 262 yards, with a pair of TDs and three picks. Aaron Gaskey has snagged a team-best seven catches.

About the Matchup: This serves as the opener for both teams in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Last year, the Panthers notched a 3-0 victory.

Penn-Trafford (3-0) at Woodland Hills (1-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Penn-Trafford engineered a 95-yard touchdown drive in the final minute, as the Warriors edged host Moon Area 25-24 in a Class 5A thriller last Friday. The decisive series, which began with just 53 seconds left in regulation, was capped with a 15-yard touchdown connection from Nate Desmond to Landon Stikkel. Desmond went 15-of-26 for 241 yards for the Warriors, while Stikkel added 51 yards on the ground. Additionally, Cody Yacamelli rushed 18 times for 84 yards and two scores, while Nick Ponko produced seven catches for 80 yards.

About the Wolverines: Woodland Hills suffered a lopsided 58-20 defeat against Pittsburgh Central Catholic last Saturday in Canton, Ohio. In the loss, QB Cam Walter went 12-of-22 for 142 yards and two TDs, while Scoop Smith was on the receiving end of both of those touchdowns, catching five passes for 65 yards. Elijah McGuire posted three carries for 76 yards and one score. On the season, Smith has a dozen receptions for 150 yards and has rushed for 89 yards, notching a team-best four total touchdowns. Walter has hit on 40-of-61 attempts for 460 yards, with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Brian Tarrant is the head coach of Woodland Hills.

About the Matchup: It’s the lid lifter for both teams in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Last year, the Wolverines claimed a 35-21 victory. Woodland Hills plays its home games at the Wolvarena in Turtle Creek.

Clairton (1-1) at Greensburg Central Catholic (2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Bears: Clairton did not play last week, as the Bears’ scheduled opponent, Shady Side Academy, did not play due to health and safety concerns. Two weeks ago, the Bears dismantled Serra Catholic 79-0. In two contests, Taris Wooding has seven receptions for 157 yards, scoring a team-high four TDs. QB Jeff Thompson has converted 26-of-39 attempts for 445 yards, with nine scores. Veteran coach Wayne Wade remains at the helm of the program.

About the Centurions: Led by Bobby Smithnosky, Greensburg Central Catholic bested Apollo-Ridge 35-16 last Friday. Smithnosky passed for 154 yards and three scores for the host Centurions. Furthermore, Samir Crosby notched a receiving touchdown and a rushing score, while Jerry Davis snagged a 70-yard interception return score. In 2025, Crosby has rushed 28 times for 252 yards and caught 13 passes for 196 yards, totaling six touchdowns, and he’s also completed both of his passes for 43 yards. Smithnosky is 29-of-45 through the air for 410 yards, with six scores and one interception. GCC has almost exactly doubled the opposition in points scored, 101-51.

About the Matchup: This showdown represents the opener in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Last year, the Bears dominated 47-0.

Burrell (1-2) at Derry Area (2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Buccaneers: A touchdown run by Antonio Perkins in the final minute gave host Burrell a 28-21 triumph against Mount Pleasant Area in a Westmoreland County clash. Perkins completed 12-of-17 throws for 153 yards, posted 13 carries for 142 yards and scored all four TDs for the Buccaneers, and he also snagged an interception in the final seconds to seal the victory. Perkins, who has accounted for the last eight TDs for Burrell, has rushed 49 times for 381 yards on the season, while completing 23-of-32 throws for 321 yards. Zack Coudriet paces the Bucs with 13 grabs for 144 yards, scoring the lone touchdown aside from Perkins.

About the Trojans: Anthony Sacco connected with Noah Stough with less than eight seconds left, giving Derry Area a thrilling 24-21 win at Deer Lakes last week. Stough amassed 140 yards receiving and two scores for the Trojans, including the 11-yard winning TD. Through three weeks, Max Doherty has rushed 51 times for 342 yards, notching four TDs to pace the team, while Sacco has hit on 17-of-44 throws for 299 yards, with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

About the Matchup: The Class 3A nonconference affair pits the Bucs, who are in the Allegheny Seven Conference, against the Trojans, who reside in the Interstate Conference. Last year, Derry Area reigned supreme, 32-13.

Norwin (2-1) at Seneca Valley (1-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Knights: Tristyn Tavares factored into four touchdowns, while Norwin’s defense was suffocating, leading the Knights to a 35-0 triumph on the road against Greater Latrobe last week. Tavares hit on 9-of-14 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for 56 yards and two more scores for the Knights. Additionally, Giovanni Rothrauff rushed for 116 yards and a TD, while Potter Brozeski caught three passes for 100 yards and another touchdown. For the season, Tavares has thrown for 381 yards and four scores, and he’s added 303 yards and six TDs on the ground. Rothrauff paces the rushing attack with 58 carries for 361 yards. The Knights have scored 31 or more points in each game thus far.

About the Raiders: Seneca Valley was on the wrong end of a 49-20 outcome last week at Pine-Richland. In the setback, quarterback Andrew Loebig went 13-of-19 for 185 yards, with one score and two picks, while Adam Gehm had six receptions for 66 yards and Max Eisenhut booted field goals of 41 and 46 yards. In three games in 2025, Loebig has thrown for 603 yards and six TDs, and he’s added 151 yards rushing on 25 carries, while Rory O’Shea has 11 receptions for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Seneca Valley is under the guidance of first-year head coach Don Barclay, an SV grad who played for eight years in the NFL.

About the Matchup: This commences the Class 6A ledger. Last year, the Raiders notched a 26-6 victory.

Hempfield Area (3-0) at North Allegheny (3-0) – 7:30 p.m.

About the Spartans: Deron Hunter took the opening kickoff for a 96-yard touchdown for Hempfield Area, as the Spartans rolled to a 43-10 home victory against Kiski Area last Friday. Spartans QB Dom Detruf went 14-of-17 passing for 214 yards and four scores, while Jack Kopas snagged three passes for 59 yards and a pair of TDs for the Spartans. Troy Sebring and Drew Jones also notched touchdown receptions, while Brock Heisler recorded a sack for a safety for Hempfield Area, which held a 23-0 edge after the first quarter. On the campaign, Detruf has completed 38-of-52 throws for 622 yards, with eight touchdowns and three picks, while he’s rushed for 158 yards. Aidan Stinebiser leads the ground game, amassing 56 carries for 264 yards and scoring five times, which is tied with Kopas for the team lead. Hempfield Area is averaging 34.0 points per game.

About the Tigers: North Allegheny blanked Penn Hills 35-0 last week, the second shutout in a row for the Tigers. In the triumph, Luke Rohan rushed 20 times for 114 yards and a touchdown and added a TD reception, while Brady Brinkley passed for two scores and added another on the ground. Thus far this season, Rohan has compiled 271 yards on the ground, 101 yards receiving, and seven total touchdowns. Mason Brown has posted a team-leading eight receptions. The Tigers have outpaced their foes by a combined margin of 104-26. Art Walker is the decorated head coach for NA.

About the Matchup: This is the initial Class 6A contest for the Spartans and Tigers. In 2024, North Allegheny cruised to a 42-14 win.

Kiski Area (1-2) at Gateway (0-3) – 7 p.m.

About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area was overmatched from the opening kickoff, as homestanding Hempfield Area prevailed 43-10 last week. The Cavaliers scored their only touchdown on a 77-yard pass from Landyn Artman to Aven Shirley in the third quarter. Artman finished 12-of-23 for 207 yards for Kiski Area. Through three weeks, Teegan Shirley has 10 grabs for 153 yards, while Aven Shirley has notched five receptions for 130 yards. The Cavaliers are averaging 12.6 points per game.

About the Gators: Gateway dropped a 23-14 outcome at home against Plum one week ago. In the setback, the Gators used two different QBs, as Mayson Mitchell went 8-of-14 for 134 yards and a score, while Jakson Smith was 16-of-23 for 127 yards and an interception, while also rushing 10 times for 62 yards and a TD. Shawn Moorefield Jr caught eight passes for 161 yards and a score. On the season, Gateway’s top passer is Dino Koutsakis, who has compiled 192 yards and two scores through the air. The Gators have been outscored 105-28 on the season. Don Holl is the longtime head coach of Gateway.

About the Matchup: This is the opener for both teams in the Class 5A Big East Conference. In 2024, the Gators prevailed 28-7.

Valley (0-3) at Imani Christian Academy (3-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: Greensburg Salem scored 26 unanswered points, as host Valley fell 26-10 last week. In the loss for the Vikings, Zay Adams registered a first-quarter TD. Valley is averaging just 3.3 points per game. Valley’s last victory came on Sept. 22, 2023.

About the Saints: Imani Christian Academy rolled to a 41-3 victory at Beaver Area last week, as Gabe Jenkins threw for 135 yards and two scores, while rushing eight times for 118 yards. For the year, Jenkins has compiled 374 yards through the air and 399 yards on the ground, while David Davis leads the Saints with four touchdowns. Coach LaRoi Johnson patrols the sidelines for Imani Christian.

Ligonier Valley (0-3) at Shady Side Academy (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley could not solve Jeannette’s defense, as the Rams fell 31-0 at Jeannette last Friday. The Rams were paced by freshman Levi Foust, who rushed a dozen times for 45 yards. To this point of the season, Foust has rushed 30 times for 195 yards, while Greyson Daugherty has registered nine receptions for 137 yards and two scores. Ligonier Valley is averaging 8.6 points per contest.

About the Bulldogs: Shady Side Academy postponed its game against Clairton last week due to health and safety concerns. Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs knocked off Burrell 56-26. In two tilts, SSA quarterback Javon Johnston has thrown for 455 yards and six touchdowns, adding 100 yards and five TDs on the ground. Additionally, BJ Mallory has caught nine passes for 177 yards and Maddox Harvey has accumulated 194 yards rushing. Andrew Geisler is in his first season leading Shady Side Academy.

About the Matchup: This clash opens play in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Last season, the Rams came out on top, 40-28.

Jeannette (2-1) at Frazier (2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette was stellar defensively and explosive offensively, as the Jayhawks rolled to a 31-0 victory at home against Ligonier Valley one week ago. Kymon’e Brown connected on 12-of-16 throws for 249 yards and three scores, while Jayce Powell caught five passes for 130 yards and a pair of scores for the Jayhawks. Nick Mendoza added two TDs for Jeannette, and Dhestin Sanders rushed for a team-high 60 yards. On the season, Brown has thrown for 643 yards and six TDs, while he’s posted 193 yards rushing. Powell has amassed 15 receptions for 341 yards and five touchdowns, all team-highs.

About the Commodores: Frazier notched a 31-14 home victory against Carmichaels last week. Quarterback Brady Secrest threw for 92 yards and a touchdown, while he rushed nine times for 86 yards and two scores. Derek Diamond racked up 25 carries for 175 yards and a TD for the Commodores. On the campaign, Diamond has accumulated 64 carries for 438 yards and five touchdowns, while Chase Fulmer has 23 receptions for 262 yards. Tony Battaglini, a Frazier grad, is in his first season leading the Commodores.

About the Matchup: Both teams open the Class 1A Eastern Conference ledger. Last season, the Jayhawks captured a 43-24 win.

Monessen (3-0) at Serra Catholic (0-3) – 7 p.m.

About the Greyhounds: Kaier Payne threw for three touchdowns, as Monessen stayed undefeated with a 20-3 victory against Beth-Center last week. The Greyhounds have allowed an average of just 7.0 points per game.

About the Eagles: Serra Catholic suffered a 26-0 loss at Leechburg last week. The Eagles have been outscored by a margin of 149-14. Akeeme Robinson is in his first season at the helm of Serra Catholic.

McKeesport Area (1-2) at Belle Vernon Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Tigers: McKeesport Area narrowly lost 16-7 at home against Thomas Jefferson last week. Avont Hudson rushed 20 times for 92 yards and the only TD for the Tigers, while Kemon Spell left with an injury after three carries for 21 yards. On the year, Spell has accounted for 295 yards rushing and five TDs, while QB Matthew Miller has gone 16-of-44 passing for 163 yards. Coach Matt Miller continues to patrol the sidelines for McKeesport.

About the Leopards: With Curty Wade leading the way, Belle Vernon Area notched a narrow 25-22 victory at Central Valley. For the Leopards, Wade threw for 165 yards and two scores, with Nick Mahalko catching four passes for 111 yards and a pair of TDs. Preston Rathway also booted a 49-yard field goal, a school record. In two contests, Wade has compiled 271 yards and two scores on 21-of-29 passing, while he’s rushed 19 times for 109 yards.

About the Matchup: While both teams play in Class 4A, the nonconference clash pits the Tigers, from the Greater Allegheny Conference, against the Leopards, who reside in the Big Six. Last year, McKeesport Area won 28-7.

Southmoreland (3-0) at Blackhawk (1-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Scotties: Southmoreland continued its prolific start to the season, as the Scotties posted a dominant 54-7 win against Laurel Highlands last Friday. Southmoreland signalcaller Dawson Wolfe connected on 9-of-12 throws for 135 yards and a pair of scores, and he rushed 14 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, the Scotties notched two scores defensively, while Jackson Mickens and Ty Whoric snagged TD receptions. On the season, Wolfe has thrown for 374 yards and eight scores, and he’s carried 28 times for 213 yards and five TDs. Averyon Darnell and Mickens have each topped 100 yards rushing on the season, as well. The Scotties have outscored their foes 143-14.

About the Cougars: Blackhawk fell 65-49 in a shootout against North Catholic last week. Brayden McCarthy had a monster performance, rushing 21 times for 298 yards and three TDs, while AJ Montgomery added 117 yards and two scores on the ground. For the season, McCarthy has amassed 639 yards on the ground and eight TDs. Jake Wickline is in his second season leading the Cougars.

About the Matchup: While Southmoreland plays in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, Blackhawks calls the Class 4A Parkway Conference home. Last year, the Cougars notched a 45-20 victory.

Ambridge Area (0-3) at Mount Pleasant Area (1-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Bridgers: Ambridge Area was smashed by Hopewell 49-2 last week. Darold Cain rushed for a team-high 56 yards in the lopsided setback. Through three games, the Bridgers have scored just 16 points while allowing 103. Coach Sherm McBride is at the helm of Ambridge Area.

About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area suffered a heartbreaking 28-21 defeat last week, as a touchdown run by Antonio Perkins in the final minute gave host Burrell the triumph. In the loss for the Vikings, quarterback Dane Firmstone went 6-of-13 through the air for 165 yards and a score, and he also found the end zone on a 1-yard run. Stephen Predajna returned for a one-week absence for the Vikes and caught a 58-yard score, but he left the contest with an apparent injury in the third quarter. On the season, Firmstone has thrown for 299 yards and rushed for 105 yards, while Richard Shawley has accounted for a team-leading 117 yards rushing.

About the Matchup: The Bridgers are from the Class 4A Parkway Conference, while the Vikings are in the Class 3A Interstate. One year ago, Ambridge triumphed 28-10.

Ringgold (2-1) at Greensburg Salem (2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ringgold’s Amoni Ward propelled the Rams to a lopsided 40-0 triumph against Yough in a weather-shortened contest last Friday. Ward rushed 12 times for 240 yards and four scores for homestanding Ringgold, while Dennis Hawkins also threw for a touchdown. On the year, Hawkins, a transfer from Monessen, has thrown for 340 yards and two scores, while Ward has compiled 45 carries for 546 yards and six touchdowns. Robert Heller is in his second campaign on the sidelines for Ringgold.

About the Golden Lions: Greensburg Salem scored 26 unanswered points, notching a 26-10 victory at Valley. Aden Krug produced a 60-yard interception return score for the Golden Lions. Moreover, Tyrese Lewis hauled in a TD pass from Brody Chismar, while LeTrey Derry found paydirt on a 3-yard run. On the year, Chismar has connected on 25-of-49 throws for 288 yards, with four TDs and one interception, and he’s registered 50 carries for 152 yards. Max Topper paces GS pass catchers with eight grabs for 111 yards. After allowing 48 points in the season opener, the Golden Lions have permitted 22 points combined over the past two tilts.

About the Matchup: In this nonconference tussle, Ringgold plays in the Class 4A Big Six, while Greensburg Salem resides in the Class 3A Interstate. In 2024, the Golden Lions claimed a narrow 7-0 win.

Yough (2-1) at New Castle (2-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Cougars: Yough had no answer for Ringgold’s Amoni Ward, who propelled the Rams to a lopsided 40-0 triumph against the Cougars in a weather-shortened contest last week. In the shutout, John Gergely paced the Cougars with 63 yards rushing, while Ryan Sarver had four receptions. Through three weeks, Gergely has notched 57 carries for 333 yards, while QB Aidan Shaffer has produced 207 yards on the ground, scoring four times. Despite the lopsided loss, the Cougars still hold a scoring advantage of 63-61 on the year.

About the Red Hurricanes: New Castle blanked host Highlands 32-0 last week. Signalcaller Marino Graham achieved a stat line of 12-of-19 passing for 165 yards and three TDs. Seven different players caught a pass for the Red Hurricanes, with Damian Harrison leading the way with 66 yards receiving. On the year, Graham has thrown for 401 yards, while Kai Cox has 11 grabs spanning 217 yards. The defense has posted a pair of shutouts this season. Coach Fred Mozzocio is leading the way for New Castle.

About the Matchup: While Yough plays in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, New Castle calls the Class 4A Parkway Conference home. One year ago, the Red Hurricanes prevailed 27-7.
