Bushy Run cracked open a scoreless game in a big way, tallying eight runs in the fifth inning and went on to capture the District 31 American Legion Baseball Championship with a 9-3 win over Lower Burrell at Penn-Trafford.
With each team unable to score through the first four-and-a-half innings, the third-seeded Beavers came alive in the fifth on a two-run triple by Noah Rattigan, an RBI single from Dylan Ridley, three bases loaded walks, a wild pitch, and on an error.
No. 4 Lower Burrell answered with three runs in the sixth as Adam Scheftic collected two RBIs with a single and Jonathan Walker delivering an RBI single. The small rally chased Bushy run starting pitcher Brandon Roher but Evan Gigliotti came into slam the door.
Rattigan finished with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored for Bushy Run (17-5-2). Ridley and Brody Hoffman each added two hits with each scoring a run. Roher was the winning pitcher as he allowed three runs in five innings. Gigliotti surrendered a pair of hits in two scoreless frames of relief.
In addition to Scheftic's big day, Austen McLafferty reached base three times and scored a run for Lower Burrell (13-10-1).
The victory marks the second District 31 championship in three years for Bushy Run after the Beavers beat Latrobe 6-2 in 2023.
Both teams, along with Latrobe and Hempfield East, advance to the Region 7 Tournament which runs from July 19-23 hosted by St. Michael.
