Franklin Regional comes back against Plum; P-T races away from Norwin; Jeannette wins again

Penn-Trafford 56 Norwin 28   (PT: 3-3; NOR: 2-4)   WATCH BROADCAST

Penn-Trafford’s Ben Grabowski and Tasso Whipple combined for nearly 400 yards rushing and six touchdowns, leading the Warriors to a 56-28 win at Norwin in a Class 5A Big East Conference clash. Consequently, PT improved to 2-0 in the conference slate, while Norwin dipped to 1-1. Grabowksi had 16 carries for 205 yards and four TDs, while Whipple toted the ball 20 times for 194 yards and a pair of touchdowns. PT scored on four consecutive drives in each the first and second halves, as QB Jonny Lovre hit on 9-of-14 passes for 147 yard and two scores, as well. Carmen Metcalfe caught six passes for 90 yards and a score. In the defeat, Norwin signalcaller Tristyn Tavares completed 23-of-35 passes for 296 yards and a pair of TDs, while Jake Knight and Jackson Pons registered 91 and 76 receiving yards, respectively.

Franklin Regional 45 Plum 26   (FR: 4-2; PL: 2-4)   LISTEN BROADCAST

A second-half rally propelled Franklin Regional to a 45-26 win at Plum in Class 5A Big East Conference play. Running back Kyle Dupill was the catalyst, as he rushed for 240 yards and five touchdowns. Ayden Hudock also produced a 65-yard TD run for the Panthers, who moved to 1-1 in conference play. In the defeat, the Mustangs were paced by QB Sean Franzi, who threw for 205 yards and three scores.

Gateway 63 Hempfield Area 21   (GATE: 3-3; HA: 1-5)

Although Dom Detruf had a strong performance behind center for Hempfield Area, the Spartans had no answer for Gateway’s offense, as the Gators prevailed 63-21 in 5A Big East Conference action. Detruf compiled 246 yards and two scores through the air, and he notched a rushing TD, as well, as the Spartans dropped to 0-2 in conference play. Gateway quarterback Brad Birch threw for 247 yards and five TDs, and he rushed for 121 yards and another score in the lopsided win.

Kiski Area 28 Indiana 7   (KA: 2-4; IND: 2-4)

Landon Kucic scored a hat trick of touchdowns on the ground, leading Kiski Area to a 28-7 road win against Indiana Area in the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference. Kucic amassed 113 yards rushing for the Cavaliers, while QB Carson Heinle registered 194 yards passing and a score for KA, which improved to 1-2 in the conference.

Greater Latrobe 25 Trinity 7   (GL: 4-2; TRIN: 3-3)

Greater Latrobe’s defense accounted for a pair of scores, as the Wildcats held serve at home with a 25-7 win against Trinity. Consequently, GL improved to 2-1 in the Class 4A Big Seven Conference. Ja’Tawn Williams and Alex Tatsch each posted interception returns for touchdowns, with Williams spanning 55 yards on his pick six. Williams also added a TD reception from John Wetzel. In the loss, the Hillers were led by QB Jonah Williamson, who threw for 166 yards and rushed for another 124 yards.

Mt. Pleasant 38 Greensburg Salem 7   (MP: 5-1; GS: 1-5)

Dante Giallonardo rushed for 153 yards and scored three total touchdowns in leading Mount Pleasant Area to a convincing 38-7 win on the road against Greensburg Salem in a Class 3A Interstate Conference affair. While the Vikings improved to 1-0 in the conference ledger, the Golden Lions dipped to 0-1. Vikings QB Cole Chatfield rushed for a TD, and he added another via the air to Giallonardo. Brady Smith secured the lone TD for GS, while QB Brody Chismar threw for 203 yards.

Elizabeth Forward 31 Southmoreland 24   (EF: 6-0; SOU: 3-3)

Southmoreland was unable to make a fourth-quarter lead stand, as the Scotties dropped a 31-24 outcome on the road against Elizabeth Forward in Class 3A Interstate Conference play. The Scotties fell to 0-1 in the conference as a result. Charlie Nigut scored all four TDs for the Warriors, including a 90-yard kickoff return, and he registered 101 yards receiving and 50 yards rushing. Kadin Keefer accounted for a TD run and connected with Ty Keffer and Da’sjon Craggette on long scores. Keffer hauled in a 67-yard scoring play, while Craggette snagged a 77-yard reception. Keefer finished with 262 yards through the air, and Craggette mustered 108 yards rushing.

Belle Vernon 57 South Allegheny 6   (BVA: 4-1; SA: 1-5)

On the heels of its first loss in more than a year, Belle Vernon Area exploded for 50 points in the first half, dominating South Allegheny 57-6 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Quinton Martin produced three rushing scores and a receiving touchdown, while Braden Laux notched three passing TDs. On eight carries, Martin compiled 74 yards, while Laux passed for 159 yards. Kole Doppleheuer, Colton Lee, Zach Zelenski, and Curtis Wade also found paydirt for BVA, which moved to 1-0 in conference play.

Serra Catholic 27 Derry Area 12   (SC: 1-4; DA: 3-3)   WATCH BROADCAST

Ahmad Ward had another monster performance for host Derry Area, but it wasn’t enough in a 27-12 loss to Serra Catholic in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Ward rushed for 149 yards and accounted for both TDs for the Trojans, who dropped to 2-1 in the conference standings. The Eagles were led by QB Quadir Stribling, who passed for 192 yards and scored a touchdown each through the air and on the ground.

East Allegheny 42 Valley 12   (EA: 4-2; VALL: 2-4)

Valley could not contain the East Allegheny attack, as the Wildcats secured a 42-12 triumph on the road in the Class 3A Allegheny Six Conference. Darnell Coaston and Trevor Corbert posted TD runs for the Vikings, while Michael Cahill threw for a pair of TDs and Amir Rollins ran for two touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Imani Christian 35 Burrell 8   (IC: 3-2; BURR: 3-3)

Burrell was unable to capitalize on its red zone chances in the first half, as the host Buccaneers fell 35-8 against Imani Christian Academy in Class 2A Allegheny Conference play. Devin Beattie’s fourth-quarter TD accounted for the only score for the Buccaneers, who dropped to 2-1 in the conference. Beattie posted 15 carries for 88 yards. Saints QB Gabe Jenkins compiled 12 carries for 133 yards, scoring twice.

Yough 21 Ligonier Valley 0   (YOU: 2-4; LV: 2-4)

Keyed by a pair of 100-yard rushers and a stifling defense, Yough ousted Ligonier Valley 21-0 in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. The Cougars improved to 1-2 in the conference, while the homestanding Rams dropped to 1-2. Yough QB Raidon Kuroda rushed for 138 yards, and Shane Swope compiled 130 yards on the ground, each finding the end zone. Antonio Marra added another TD run for Yough.

Clairton 40 Greensburg Central Catholic 28   (CLA: 4-2; GCC: 3-3)   WATCH BROADCAST

A furious fourth-quarter comeback bid came up short for Greensburg Central Catholic, as Clairton claimed a 40-28 victory at home in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. The Centurions scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, but Drahcir Jones sealed the outcome for the Bears on a 40-yard touchdown run on fourth down, accounting for the final points. Jones amassed 31 carries for 271 yards and four TDs. Tyree Turner hit on 14-of-26 passes for 208 yards and two TD, and he added a score on the ground for GCC, which fell to 1-1 in conference play. Turner’s touchdown passes went to Peter Mazowiecki and Landon Honick.

Jeannette 42 Riverview 22   (JEA: 5-1; RIV: 3-3)   LISTEN BROADCAST

Jeannette took a 35-0 lead en route to a 42-22 win at home against Riverview in Class 1A Eastern Conference play. The Jayhawks, who scored two touchdowns in the first two offensive plays from scrimmage, received another big effort from QB Payton Molter and receiver Kymon’e Brown, who hooked up for three TDs. Molter went 8-of-12 for 158 yards, and Brown caught three passes for 88 yards. Noah Sanders, who scored on each of those first two plays, finished with six carries for 151 yards. The Jayhawks sit at 2-0 in conference play.
