WPIAL baseball first round game recaps from Monday, May 11th 2026:

Hampton 7 Belle Vernon 1 (4A)

No. 12 Hampton plated two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings plus took advantage of four Belle Vernon miscues to secure a 7-1 upset victory over the fifth-seeded Leopards in a WPIAL 4A first round contest at Gateway. After the Talbots went up 1-0 early, Belle Vernon tied the game in the third as Jaden Johnson's single drove in Jordan Jerome, who had tripled, to make it 1-1. But it's the lone run the Leopards would manage off of a trio of Hampton pitchers. Jerome added a double in the game to lead the offense for Belle Vernon (14-6). Colin Custer went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored for the Talbots (13-8) who will face Derry Area in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Derry Area 2 Beaver Area 1 (4A)

Max Doherty drove in both runs for Derry Area plus was the winning pitcher as the 13th seeded Trojans earned a 2-1 upset over No. 4 Beaver Area in a WPIAL 4A first round match up at Deer Lakes. Doherty's double drove in Cason Long in the third inning to give Derry Area a 1-0 lead. He then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home a crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. The Bobcats loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and Mikey Corob drew a walk to force in a run and make it a 2-1 game. Long then replaced Doherty on the mound and struck out J Derringer to end the game. In addition to Doherty's two RBIs, Long reached base three times and scored once for the Trojans (8-9). Cam Ferri was on base twice and scored. Doherty struck out three batters in 6 2/3 innings while yielding just one run on seven hits. Maddox Tanner had three hits for Beaver Area (15-6). Derry Area will face Hampton in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Monday at a site and time to be determined.
