WPIAL announces football playoff brackets Saturday

12 Westmoreland County football teams qualified for postseason

A dozen Westmoreland County football teams learned their playoff fate on Saturday, as the WPIAL released its postseason brackets. Belle Vernon Area, the defending WPIAL Class 3A champion, received the top seed in its class, and thus will open in the quarterfinals next week. The rest of the county teams, though, will begin their title quest this Friday.

In Class 5A, Penn-Trafford gained the seventh seed, and will play second-seeded and host Penn Hills on Friday at 7 p.m. The Warriors (5-5) finished in second place in the Big East Conference, while the Indians (8-2) captured the title in the Northeast Conference. Elsewhere in the bracket, Franklin Regional secured the eighth and final seed, and will play at top-seeded Peters Township on Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers (6-4) finished third in the Big East Conference and gained a wild card berth, while the Indians (10-0) won the Allegheny Six Conference. The WPIAL Championship will be played at Norwin High School on Saturday, Nov. 18.

In the 4A bracket, Greater Latrobe garnered the No. 9 seed, and will play at eight seed West Allegheny on Friday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats (7-3) tied for second with Thomas Jefferson and Trinity from the Big Seven Conference, while the Indians (6-4) finished fourth from the Parkway Conference. Additionally, Kiski Area secured the No. 11 seed, and will travel to play sixth-seeded Thomas Jefferson on Friday at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers (5-5) finished in a three-way tie for third from the Greater Allegheny Conference, while the Jaguars (8-2) were deadlocked with Greater Latrobe and Trinity in second in the Big Seven Conference. The WPIAL title game will be held at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m.

The Class 3A field is highlighted by Belle Vernon Area, which gained the top seed and a first-round bye. The Leopards (8-1) won the Interstate Conference, and will host the winner of No. 8 Deer Lakes and No. 9 Southmoreland, which will be played on Friday at 7 p.m. The Scotties (6-4) garnered their seed as a result of a third-place finish from the Interstate Conference, while the homestanding Lancers (7-3) came in third in the Allegheny Six Conference. Lastly, Mount Pleasant Area was seeded No. 11, and will face No. 6 seed and host West Mifflin Area on Friday at 7 p.m. The Vikings (6-4) took fourth in the Interstate, while the Titans (6-4) placed second in the Western Hills Conference. The WPIAL Championship will take place at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 24 at 5 p.m.

In 2A, Derry Area garnered the No. 11 seed, and will play at sixth-seeded McGuffey on Friday at 7 p.m. The Trojans (5-5) came in fourth in the Allegheny Conference, while the Highlanders tied with Washington atop the Century Conference. Additionally, Burrell was seeded No. 12, and will play at fifth seed Mohawk on Friday at 7 p.m. The Buccaneers (4-6) finished fifth from the Allegheny Conference, while the Warriors (8-2) came in second out of the Midwest Conference. The WPIAL champion will be crowned at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.

Three Westmoreland teams made the field in Class 1A, led by Greensburg Central Catholic, which was seeded eighth and will play No. 9 West Greene at Plum High School on Friday at 7 p.m. The Centurions (7-3) finished as runner up from the Eastern Conference, while the Pioneers came in second from the Tri-County South Conference. Jeannette received the No. 11 seed, and will play homestanding No. 6 California Area on Friday at 7 p.m. The Jayhawks (7-3) came in third from the Eastern Conference, while the Trojans finished atop the Tri-County South Conference. Lastly, Monessen received the No. 16 seed, and will play at top-seeded South Side Beaver on Friday at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds (4-6) placed fourth from the Tri-County South, while the Rams (10-0) took first in the Big Seven Conference. The WPIAL Championship will be played at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 24 at 11 a.m.
