Penn-Trafford scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat Bethel Park, 4-3, to claim its first ever WPIAL baseball title winning the 5A championship on Tuesday at Wild Things Park.
Down 2-0, Penn-Trafford's Ian Temple hit a sharp line drive to right field which was misplayed by outfielder Jack Bruckner and allowed two runs to score to tie the game. Carmen Metcalfe followed with a squeeze bunt to bring in courtesy runner David Newsom and, after a strikeout, Brayden Stone doubled in Metcalfe to put the Warriors ahead 4-2.
"My coach really believes in me and I stand for it," Temple said afterward about his crucial at-bat. "I have to step up there knowing I'm going to get a hit and that's what I did today."
The Blackhawks responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as, with the bases loaded, Ethan Stanhoff hit a fly ball to center field which was deep enough to score courtesy runner Aaron Hofbauer from third. But on the play, Ryan Petras tried to tag up from first base and was thrown out at second on a relay throw from centerfielder Jason Sabol to cutoff man Brody Hoffman to Brayden Stone waiting to make the tag.
The double play ended the inning with Bethel Park still down by a run. The pitching trio of Brandon Roher, Dom Delio and Hunter Brown would make it stand.
Roher wasn't razor sharp but he battled his way to a victory. The senior allowed three runs on four hits in four innings. Dom Delio worked two scoreless innings of relief before giving way to Hunter Brown who pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save, ending the game with a strikeout.
"I sent them a reminder this morning and told them I'm proud of you", P-T coach Lou Cortazzo said. "Not only what you do on the field but how you took the team and made it a family. These kids are so tight knit here, so close and it makes a huge difference."
"We're scrappers," Cortazzo continued. "They went down two runs and didn't give up and just battled and battled and our pitching came through again."
Both teams advance to the PIAA tournament beginning Monday. Penn-Trafford (20-3) will face the fifth seed out of District 3 while Bethel Park (15-7-1) plays the District 3 champion.
