Mt. Pleasant girls, Kiski Area boys capture WPIAL swimming gold

A pair of Westmoreland County teams enjoyed a golden performance at the WPIAL Swimming Championships on Thursday and Friday, as the Mount Pleasant Area girls and Kiski Area boys each reigned supreme at Trees Pool in Oakland.

The Vikings paced Class AA with a team total of 290, which easily surpassed second-place Northgate, which scored 198. The Vikings repeated as girls champs.

Additionally on the girls side, Kiski Area finished fourth, Derry Area placed 14th, Belle Vernon Area came in 21st, Ligonier Valley ranked 33rd, and Greensburg Salem finished 35th.

Individually, Lily King of Mount Pleasant Area won gold in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.36, and she also won the 100 freestyle, notching a mark of 48.58.

Meanwhile, teammate Kiersten O’Connor captured first in the 50 freestyle at 23.76 and third in the 100 backstroke, timing in at 56.66.

Kiski Area’s Eliza Miller won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.17, and she finished second in the 200 IM at 2:05.45.

Meanwhile, the Vikings took gold in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.86, they won the 200 freestyle relay, notching a time of 1:35.90, and they completed their dominant showing with first place in the 400 freestyle relay, securing a time of 3:32.07.

The Kiski Area boys rallied from a 41-point deficit after the first day to claim the Class AA team title, as the Cavaliers scored 228 points, edging Indiana Area, which had 206. It marked the first crown for Kiski Area in team history.

Other Westmoreland teams that placed in the classification included Mount Pleasant Area (sixth), Greater Latrobe (eighth), Belle Vernon Area (tied 16th), Southmoreland (18th), Derry Area (24th), Burrell (27th), and Greensburg Salem (33rd).

Individually, Henry Miller of Southmoreland won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.18 and the 100 butterfly with a mark of 48.87, while Mount Pleasant’s David Mutter came in second in the butterfly at 49.57. Parker Sterlitz of Kiski Area won the 500 freestyle with a mark of 4:32.20, and he took third in the 200 freestyle at 1:41.98. Mount Pleasant’s Joseph Gardner won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.81.

Kiski Area finished first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:10.32, and took third place in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:27.08. Additionally, Mount Pleasant Area came in second in the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:36.48.

In the Class AAA girls competition, Greater Latrobe finished eight with a score of 131. Franklin Regional finished one spot behind the Wildcats, while Norwin placed 11th and Hempfield Area finished 12th. North Allegheny cruised to the team championship, registering a score of 484.

Greater Latrobe’s Lauren Bell was the third-place finisher in the 100 freestyle, as she clocked 52.11.

In Class AAA boys, Franklin Regional was the top Westmoreland team, as the Panthers placed sixth with 156 points. Hempfield Area finished 10th, Penn-Trafford came in 11th, and Norwin placed 13th. North Allegheny took gold by a comfortable margin, as the Tigers compiled a score of 321.5.

Individually, Penn-Trafford’s Patton Graziano won the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.51, while Hempfield Area’s Dominic Falcon took second at 46.63. Falcon claimed gold in the 50 freestyle, however, with a time of 20.87. Additionally, Graziano finished as runner up in the 100 backstroke, compiling a time of 50.39, while Holden Thomas of FR took third at 50.45. Franklin Regional’s Aiden Bunker finished as the runner up in the 200 IM, notching a time of 1:53.33. The Panthers 200 medley relay came in third with a time of 1:34:29, while FR also placed third in the 200 freestyle relay, recording a time of 1:25.68.
