During the regular season, Greensburg Central Catholic girls volleyball finished second in the section. But when the WPIAL and state postseasons concluded, the Centurions were second to none. GCC captured the fourth district crown and third PIAA title in program history this fall.
Competing in Class 1A Section 4, the Centurions went 6-2 in the section ledger, losing twice to Frazier. As a result, Greensburg Central Catholic entered the WPIAL playoff bracket as the third seed.
The Centurions cruised to straight-set victories against No. 14 West Greene and sixth-seeded Beaver County Christian, and then edged second seed Eden Christian Academy 3-2 to reach the title game.
Facing top-seeded Frazier, Greensburg Central Catholic girls volleyball posted a dominant performance, as the Centurions swept their way to the WPIAL Class 1A Championship. At the AHN Arena at Peters Township, the Centurions bested the Commodores 25-18, 25-21, and 25-15, capturing the first district crown since 2016. Ashlyn Black paced Greensburg Central Catholic with 24 kills, while Maura Oslosky had 34 assists and Brianna Evans had three aces and 15 digs.
In the PIAA playoffs, the Centurions ousted Clarion Limestone and West Branch, setting the stage for another matchup against the Commodores. The back-and-forth affair went the distance, as GCC edged Frazier 3-2 to advance to the state title.
On the biggest stage, Greensburg Central Catholic rallied to capture the PIAA Class 1A Championship, as the Centurions edged Linville Hill Christian School 3-2 at Cumberland Valley High School. GCC prevailed 22-25, 25-6, 19-25, 25-10, and 15-5. As a result, the Centurions joined previous state championship teams from 2014 and 16. Black paced the Centurions with 21 kills, while Eva Denis and Erin Grace each contributed a dozen kills. Black also posted five aces and 14 digs, while Grace amassed four blocks. Oslosky orchestrated the GCC offense with 45 assists, and she also notched 20 digs.
Greensburg Central Catholic, which was guided by head coach Erin Salas, finished the campaign with a mark of 21-3.
Due to their championship season, the Greensburg Central Catholic girls volleyball team is recognized as Shining Stars which awards the program a $500 contribution courtesy of Smail Kia in Greensburg and the Westmoreland Sports Network.
ABOUT SHINING STARS: Shining Stars is a program formed by Westmoreland Sports Network and Smail Kia in Greensburg to recognize and support Westmoreland County student-athletes whose academics, community and athletic excellence shines the brightest. Two teams will be chosen as Shining Stars each season throughout the year with both receiving funding to assist their booster groups. The program has now donated over $10,000 to local teams.
