Milestones are a huge part of an athlete’s career. Whether it’s closing in on 1,000 points, approaching a home run record, or establishing a new touchdown mark, reaching these goals is what most athletes hope to accomplish.
For Burrell’s Luke Boylan, he’s been able to cross off one milestone, and hopes to knock off another one shortly.
The Buccaneer wrestling standout recently made his commitment to continue his career on the mat at Seton Hill University.
“It feels really relieving that I don’t have to go through the season worrying about wins and losses,” the future Griffin mentioned. “It’s nice to get it out of the way.”
Despite not worrying about wins this season, Boylan is approaching an impressive feat in his career record.
After 25 wins as a freshman, and following that with 29 and 34 wins in the past two campaigns, the Buccaneer comes into this season 12 wins shy of career No. 100.
“It’s been on my mind for a while,” revealed Boylan, who has wrestled at 215 pounds each of his three years. “Freshman year during my first week at practice, I wrote down a goal to reach 100 wins.
“I’m really excited for that, but I don’t want to look too far ahead. That’s when bad things start to happen.”
Boylan credits his ability to close in on this number to the work he put in during the offseason. He made sure to focus on the weight room, but also focused on the mental side of things.
“I have a mindset coach named Drew Phipps (who wrestled at Norwin and Bucknell),” he added. “I talked to him and he gave me a lot of tips, a lot of things I didn’t know I had to do, but that I do now that has helped. I give a lot of praise to him.”
With Boylan’s mind and body both focused on the impending season with Burrell, he feels that he can compete with anyone in the WPIAL.
As he sets his sights on qualifying for states this year, he is excited for another four years after this season at Seton Hill.
“I’m looking forward to being able to prove myself and get better,” he discussed. “And also wrestling with my new teammates, making memories, and having fun along the way.”
