Two years ago, Burrell’s streak of 15 consecutive WPIAL team wrestling titles was snapped by Quaker Valley. Last year, the Buccaneers were again denied a district crown, as Burgettstown reigned supreme.

On Saturday at the AHN Arena at Peters Township High School, Burrell outclassed both of those teams, claiming the 18th WPIAL team title in program history, and perhaps starting a new championship streak in the process.

The No. 2 seed Buccaneers left no doubt in Class 2A, defeated the Quakers 44-17 in the semifinals, and then besting the top-seeded Blue Devils 41-20 in the championship matchup.

Against Burgettstown, Burrell won five of the first six matches to establish a 23-3 lead. Luke Boylan opened with a major decision to the Bucs, and Cam Baker, Carter Thomas, Luca Rosa, and Julian Bertucci also added early wins, including falls by Baker and Rosa. Although the Blue Devils briefly closed the gap, Burrell sealed the outcome with victories by Cooper Hornack, Calio Zanella, Nico Zanella, and Isaac Lacinski, including first-period pins by Hornack and Lacinski.

Earlier on Saturday, the Buccaneers dominated Quaker Valley, highlighted by falls courtesy of Lacinski, Boylan, Bertucci, and Hornack.

Also in the semifinals, No. 5 seed Mount Pleasant Area fell to Burgettstown 56-15. In that setback, the Vikings received falls by Jamison Poklembo and Greg Shaulis, and a decision via Dylan Pitzer. The Vikings finished in fourth, dropping the consolation match against Quaker Valley 42-28. The top four teams in Class 2A all advance the PIAA bracket, which commences this Thursday in Hershey.

Franklin Regional will also compete in the state tournament from Class 3A, as the Panthers notched a third-place finish. Second-seeded FR lost to eventual champion Connellsville Area 31-28 in the semifinals, but rebounded with a 28-27 triumph against Bethel Park in the consolation bracket to claim the final PIAA berth.

In the narrow loss to the Falcons, the Panthers fell into a 19-4 hole. Scoring wins for the Panthers were Chase Smith, Ethan Cartwright, Henry Patts, Troy McClelland, Juliano Marion, and Mike Ruane, with Patts, McClelland, and Marion notching falls.

Against the Black Hawks, Tyler Kapusta, McClelland, and Marion scored falls, while Luke Ankney, Patts, and Mike Ruane added victories.

Connellsville Area edged top-seeded Trinity 33-32 in the Class 3A Championship, as the Falcons secured their eighth WPIAL team crown.
