West Point softball recognized as Shining Stars

The 11U team won the 38th overall state title in West Point history in August

The 11U West Point softball team, made up of players from Hempfield Area and Greater Latrobe, reeled off four straight wins to capture the Pennsylvania state championship in August. West Point impressively outscored its opponents 32-3 over the four-game stretch including a 2-1 victory against Williamsport in the title game.

The championship marked the 38th overall state title in the history of West Point softball which includes multiple age brackets.

With the final game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jocelyn Luft came up with a walk-off single to plate her twin sister, Jayelyn, and give West Point the clinching win over Williamsport.

Jocelyn Luft finished the tournament with a team-leading batting average of .800 while Jayelyn fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in the championship contest. Other players that had crucial roles included Braylyn Graft, Peyton Reamer, Morgan Maiers, Camryn Ecker, Sophia Porreca, Piper Hoppel, Caitlyn Leach and Lily Carroll.

The coaching staff included head coach Matt Maiers and assistants Tina Madison, Bob Madison and Jim Porreca.

In recognition of their outstanding accomplishment, West Point softball will be granted the Shining Stars recognition, entailing a $500 contribution courtesy of Smail Kia in Greensburg and the Westmoreland Sports Network.

ABOUT SHINING STARS: Shining Stars is a program formed by Westmoreland Sports Network and Smail Kia in Greensburg to recognize and support Westmoreland County student-athletes whose academics, community and athletic excellence shines the brightest. Two teams will be chosen as Shining Stars each season throughout the year with both receiving funding to assist their booster programs.
