Westmoreland County girls basketball game recaps from Monday, February 3rd 2025:
Upper St. Clair 66 Hempfield Area 43
Hempfield Area had no answer for Rylee Kalocay, who scored 30 points in leading Upper St. Clair to a 66-43 triumph at Hempfield Area in Section 2-6A. Meredith Huzjak added 15 points for the Panthers (14-5, 7-2). Conversely, Allie Cervola tallied 13 points for the Spartans (10-10, 2-7), while Ava Shipman scored 11 points.
Franklin Regional 57 Armstrong 17
Madison DeRiggi's big game carried Franklin Regional to a 57-17 Section 1-5A blowout win against visiting Armstrong. DeRiggi tallied 22 points for the Panthers (15-5, 11-0) while Toryn Fulton added 15 points and Anna Novelli had 10. The Riverhawks are now (3-16, 2-10). Franklin Regional will face second place Shaler on Friday to try and win the section title outright.
Greensburg Salem 48 Greater Latrobe 46
Greensburg Salem scored the final eight points of the contest to upset Greater Latrobe 48-46 in Section 2-5A. Mya Heasley paced the offense for the Golden Lions (12-8, 5-6), scoring 19 points, including five 3-pointers, while Regan Kerr contributed 13 points. In the setback for the Wildcats (10-9, 6-5), Brylee Bodnar amassed 17 points, while Carley Berk netted 11 points, and Maggie Maiers scored 10. Both teams have already clinched playoff berths in Class 5A.
Penn-Trafford 63 Kiski Area 41
Penn-Trafford remained unbeaten with a 63-41 triumph at Kiski Area in Section 2-5A. Kamryn Pieper collected 17 points to pace the Warriors (20-0, 11-0) with teammate Lauren Marton scoring 13. Gianna DeVito notched 15 points for the Cavaliers (10-10, 4-7). Penn-Trafford can clinch the section championship outright by defeating Indiana on Thursday. Kiski Area would clinch a WPIAL playoff spot with a win over McKeesport Thursday coupled with a Greensburg Salem loss to West Mifflin.
Burrell 70 Valley 30
Adrianna Vogel's 19 points helped carry Burrell to 70-30 Section 1-4A win over Valley. In addition to Vogel, Jules Fisher helped with 14 points for the Buccaneers (12-8, 7-5) while McKenna Miller and Casey Brancato each produced 12. Janelle Norman finished with 12 points for the Vikings (2-18,1-12). Burrell has clinched a WPIAL postseason berth.
Oakland Catholic 49 Derry Area 19
Oakland Catholic charged out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 49-19 victory against Derry Area in Section 1-4A play. Jane Huss accumulated 15 points for the Trojans (4-14, 1-12) while Mikayla Canty put in 10 points for the Eagles (17-3, 12-1).
Belle Vernon 38 Mount Pleasant 18
Paced by Aubrey Brown’s double-double and a suffocating defensive effort, Belle Vernon Area claimed a 37-18 win at Mount Pleasant Area in Section 3-4A action. Brown posted 10 points and 11 rebounds for the playoff-bound Leopards (9-11, 6-6). Meanwhile, the loss hindered the playoff aspirations for the Vikings (4-15, 4-9).
South Park 62 Southmoreland 10
South Park rolled past Southmoreland 62-10 in Section 3-4A play. Belle Stromberg dropped in 16 points for the Eagles (14-5, 11-2) while the Scotties drop to (3-17, 1-12))
Elizabeth Forward 62 Yough 33
Yough fell behind quickly, trailing 28-5 after the first quarter, and went on to taste defeat at Elizabeth Forward 62-33 in a Section 3-4A game. Brooke Wieland's seven points were the most on the Cougars (11-10, 5-8). Michelle Jellison scored a game-high 29 points for the Warriors (17-3, 13-0) who clinched the section title.
Ligonier Valley 47 East Allegheny 19
Adleigh Myers led Ligonier Valley with 10 points as the Rams secured a Section 2-3A win over East Allegheny 47-19. The Rams are now (6-13, 4-8) while the Wildcats slip to (1-17,0-13).
Shady Side Academy 59 Greensburg Central Catholic 48 WATCH BROADCAST
Tied heading into the fourth quarter, Shady Side Academy outscored homestanding Greensburg Central Catholic 18-7 to secure a 59-48 victory. As a result, the Bulldogs (20-0, 13-0) claimed the outright Section 2-3A crown. Erica Gribble netted a game-high 26 points, but she was limited to just three in the final stanza for the Centurions (15-4, 10-2). Jayla Peterson added 10 points for GCC. Meanwhile, Karis Thomas compiled 23 points for SSA, while Cassie Sauer added 15 points in a matchup of reigning WPIAL champions.
