SHU Football (1-0, 0-0): Despite committing five turnovers, the Griffins were able to overcome mistakes to win their season opener against Wheeling on Thursday 16-14 at Offutt Field.
Sophomore kicker Luke Hauger (Mt. Pleasant) booted three field goals in the game of 36, 19 and 29 yards. A 43-yard touchdown pass from Chris Jones to Michael Elardo put Seton Hill ahead 16-7 at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter. But right before the quarter expired, the Griffins fumbled an exchange and Wheeling recovered it in the end zone to make the score 16-14.
Another fumble by SHU with 2:41 left in the game gave the Cardinals a chance to go ahead with a 26-yard field goal but the snap was bobbled and the Griffins took over on downs and ran out the clock.
Chris Jones finished 18-of-33 passing for 262 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Jaiquawn McGriff led Seton Hill's rushing attack with 81 yards on 19 carries. Taro Gaither caught six passes for 82 yards while Elardo finished with 67 yards receiving and a score.
The Griffins defense allowed just 183 yards of total offense with Jaylen McDuffie leading the way totaling 11 tackles, three for a loss. Dioh Desuah made three tackles for a loss plus two sacks.
For his efforts, Hauger was honored as the PSAC West Special Teams Player of the Week.
Seton Hill hosts Bloomsburg on Saturday at 6 p.m. Griffins Game Day Pregame begins at 5 p.m. on WSN.
SHU Men's Soccer (1-1, 0-0): The Seton Hill men's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a split in a pair of non-conference games. On Friday, Seton Hill defeated the District of Columbia 3-2 at Dicks Sporting Goods Field. Mike Figueroa notched the game-winning goal in the 86th minute exactly 60 seconds after District of Columbia tied the game. Wilfred Munn assisted. Anthony Panko scored the other two goals for the Griffins.
On Saturday, SHU fell on the road to Alderson Broaddus 1-0 with the Battlers scoring the contest's lone goal in the 71st minute. Bobby White made seven saves for Seton Hill which managed just two shots in the game.
The Griffins host Frostburg State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. then travel to Millersville on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
SHU Women's Soccer (1-0, 0-0): Victoria Rothrauff's goal in the 20th minute ended up being the game-winner as Seton Hill opened the season with a 1-0 triumph at West Liberty in a non-conference match up.
The Griffins were outshot 10-7 in the game but goalkeeper Grace Kenyon made nine saves in the shutout bid.
The team opens PSAC play at Gannon on Saturday at 6 p.m.
SHU Women's Volleyball (0-3, 0-0): The SHU women's volleyball team got off to a tough start to the season, losing all three matches in the Findlay Tournament by identical scores of 3-1 in Findlay, Ohio.
On Friday, Seton Hill was downed by Catawba and Northwood. Mara Yahner collected 14 kills in the first match while Paige Cole came in with 16 kills and three aces against Northwood.
SHU squared off with Catawba again on Saturday, losing 3-1. Cole finished with 12 kills while Bobbi Rempe added 11. Riley Rock piled up 26 assists.
The Griffins will travel to Canton, Ohio this weekend as they participate in the Malone Tournament. They will play Fairmont State and Slippery Rock on Friday and Malone and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.
SHU Women's Field Hockey (1-2, 0-0): The Seton Hill women's field hockey team won their season opener against Frostburg State but were then shut out in the next two games last week.
In the victory over Frostburg, Jade Taylor gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead and after the Bobcats tied it, Haley Brenny tallied the game-winning goal.
Unfortunately, SHU lost to Lindenwood 5-0 on Saturday ant Newberry 5-0 on Sunday.
Seton Hill welcomes Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday at Noon.
SHU Women's Tennis: Seton Hill won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches for a 7-0 win at Saint Vincent on Saturday.
The Griffins earned the one doubles point with three doubles wins. SHU got wins from Cameron Beer/Kendall McCluskey (8-2), Kasey Storkel/Kaitlyn Walch (8-2) and Julianna Begley/Marlayna Verenna (8-3).
Beer won at number one singles (6-0, 6-1). McCluskey added a 6-2, 7-5 win at number two singles. Storkel won 6-1 and 6-1 at number three singles. Begley won 6-4, 6-1, Walch won 6-1, 6-3 and Verenna picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win.
SHU will host Fairmont State next Sunday at noon at Latrobe High School.
