PT, Burrell girls hoops start strong; Wildcats skate past Knights; Curtis hits buzzer-beater for SHU

Penn-Trafford, Burrell girls off to 2-0 starts

A couple of Westmoreland County girls basketball teams are off to 2-0 starts to the campaign, as Penn-Trafford and Burrell each won twice over the weekend. Both teams competed at the Play 4 Mae Tournament at Woodland Hills High School on Saturday and Sunday. The Warriors notched a 56-40 win against Seneca Valley, and followed with a 57-47 triumph against Allderdice. In the win against the Raiders, Kamryn Pieper posted 11 points for PT. Against the Dragons, Lauren Marton tallied 17 points, while Torrie DeStefano contributed 11 points. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, dominated the competition, stifling Carrick 57-8 and overwhelming Steel Valley 57-9. Against the Raiders, Jules Fisher paced Burrell with 15 points, while McKenna Miller added 13 points and Casey Brancato scored a dozen. The following day against the Ironmen, Miller netted 13, Fisher notched 12, and Brancato and Mikayla Coury each registered 10 points.

Crimboli, Hayburn’s hat tricks carry Wildcats past Knights

A pair of Wildcats netted hat tricks in leading Greater Latrobe hockey to a 10-5 win against host Norwin last Monday at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont. Joey Crimboli and Jackson Hayburn each scored three goals and added two assists in the triumph. The Wildcats scored the first eight goals of the contest, including a natural hat trick by Crimboli. Hayburn capped off the scoring for GL with his third goal, making it 10-1. The Knights scored four times in the final four minutes of the tilt, including a pair by Parker Toth. Reese Myers earned the victory in net for Greater Latrobe, making 13 saves. With the victory, the Wildcats ascended to 6-2-0, and with 18 points, they sit in third in Class AA. Norwin, meanwhile, dipped to 0-7-1, registering just one point.

Nine Westmoreland girls selected for All-Star volleyball

The third-annual We Serve First All-Star Classic volleyball tournament will take place this Saturday at Kiski Area High School, and a bevy of Westmoreland County standouts have been selected. The event will feature a round robin tournament with 40 senior standouts who were nominated by their coaches. The Westmoreland representatives include Kiski Area’s Maddie Joyce, Adelyne Ledbetter, and Jael Ledbetter, Norwin’s Natalie Aquilio and Addison Matovich, Valley’s Destiny Williams and Nevaeh Lyle, Carson Burgh of Franklin Regional, and Burrell’s Pyper Ferres. Moreover, Burrell’s Alyson Shirey will serve as one of the four coaches.

Curtis’ buzzer-beater lifts Griffins MBB

Keyed by a buzzer-beater from beyond halfcourt by Kedrick Curtis, Seton Hill University men’s basketball notched a 73-72 thriller against Glenville State on Saturday. The host Griffins faced a 71-62 deficit with approximately two minutes left, but rallied for the victory to improve to 7-2 on the season. In addition to his heroic shot, Curtis netted 14 points and eight rebounds for SHU. Gage Lattimore paced the Griffins with 17 points, while Ryan Meis and Gabe Gillespie each tallied 11 points.
