Perkins, Burrell football edge Mount Pleasant
A touchdown run by Antonio Perkins in the final minute gave host Burrell a 28-21 triumph against Mount Pleasant Area in a Westmoreland County clash last Friday. Perkins completed 12-of-17 throws for 153 yards, and posted 13 carries for 142 yards and scored all four TDs for the Buccaneers, and he also snagged an interception in the final seconds to seal the victory. In the defeat for the Vikings, quarterback Dane Firmstone went 6-of-13 through the air for 165 yards and a score, and he also found the end zone on a 1-yard run. Stephen Predajna returned for a one-week absence for the Vikes and caught a 58-yard score, but he left the contest in the third quarter. As a result of the outcome, both teams are 1-2 overall, as the Buccaneers will travel to Derry Area this Friday, while the Vikings will host Ambridge Area.
Warriors girls knock off Wildcats on the pitch
Penn-Trafford girls soccer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, and the Warriors hung on in a 4-3 victory against Greater Latrobe last Wednesday. The match served as the Class 4A Section 1 opener for both teams. Emilie Oslosky scored a hat trick for PT, while Ellie Lebe opened the scoring for the home team less than three minutes into the first half. However, the Wildcats battled back, courtesy of a pair of goals by Emerson Shine and another by Annalyse Bauer. Greater Latrobe nearly netted the equalizer in the final minute of regulation, but an apparent goal by Bauer was negated by a hand ball. Penn-Trafford returned to the pitch on Saturday, playing to a 3-3 draw at Shaler Area, pushing the Warriors overall mark to 1-2-1. The Wildcats, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4-0 after a 5-0 setback at Seneca Valley on Saturday.
Former Spartan Uschock hired to lead FR softball
Maddie Uschock, a championship-winning pitcher for Hempfield Area, was hired last week to lead Franklin Regional softball. She replaces Jim Armstrong, who retired following the 2025 campaign after leading the Panthers for 23 years. During her time with the Spartans, Uschock won four WPIAL titles and three PIAA championships. As a senior at Hempfield, she went 21-3 with a 1.10 ERA and 187 strikeouts, earning Class 6A First-Team All-State honors. She started her college softball career at Dominican College, and transferred to Shippensburg University, where she appeared in 34 games. This past spring, the Panthers went 13-7 overall, reaching the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, but falling to Fox Chapel Area in the opening round.
Griffins FB rolls to road victory
Seton Hill University football secured its first victory of the 2025 season last Saturday, as the Griffins rolled to a 42-21 win at West Liberty University. With the game deadlocked at 14-14 late in the second quarter, the Griffins scored the go-ahead touchdown with eight seconds remaining, sparking 28 unanswered points to seal the victory. Boden St. Marie went 11-of-18 through the air for 183 yards and three scores for SHU. Additionally, the Griffins scored on defense with a 74-yard interception return by Darius Patterson, while special teams also accounted for a TD on a blocked punt that was returned 38 yards by Drew Zimmerman. The victory marked the first win for Kevin May as the head coach of the Griffins. Seton Hill returns home to Offutt Field to host Bloomsburg University on Saturday.
Goff earns first W leading Saint Vincent
Saint Vincent College football opened the 2025 campaign in impressive fashion, as the Bearcats notched a 28-7 home victory against Hilbert College last Saturday. Saint Vincent scored a touchdown in each quarter, as Jake Phillips threw for 199 yards and four scores, while Chris Downs had six receptions for 100 yards and two TDs. Defensively, Nathan Parker notched 18 tackles, an SVC single-game record. First-year head coach Casey Goff earned his inaugural victory with the Bearcats. Saint Vincent will play at the College of Wooster for a nonconference tilt on Saturday.
