Penn-Trafford faces Peters; Franklin Regional aims to upset Pine-Richland; GCC and Jeannette renew rivalry

After one week of the WPIAL football playoffs, four Westmoreland County teams remain. While Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional aim to punch their tickets to the semifinals in Class 5A, Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette will square off in Class 1A with a trip to the semis at stake. Here’s a detailed examination of the three postseason contests involving Westmoreland teams.

Class 5A Quarterfinals:

No. 6 Penn-Trafford (9-2) at No. 3 Peters Township (9-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Derek Carr scored three rushing touchdowns, while Tasso Whipple had a monster performance on both sides of the ball in leading host Penn-Trafford to a 49-28 victory against No. 11 South Fayette in the Class 5A first round last week. Carr notched 76 yards on the ground, and Whipple rushed 21 times for 148 yards and a score, and he notched a 45-yard interception return score during a 21-0 run by PT in the fourth quarter. Ben Grabowski added 82 yards rushing for the Warriors. Quarterback Jonny Lovre and lineman David Dziedzic also found paydirt for PT. On the season, Whipple has rushed 203 times for 1,638 yards, along with posting 14 receptions for 236 yards, totaling 15 touchdowns. Lovre has hit on 92-of-166 throws for 1,228 yards, with nine TDs and nine interceptions, while Jack Weishaar has compiled 30 grabs for 428 yards and six scores. The Warriors, who have won seven in a row, boast a scoring margin of 306-170.

About the Indians: Peters Township, which had a bye last week, edged Bethel Park 31-28 in the regular-season finale in the Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference. Indians signalcaller Nolan DiLucia has been prolific, as he's connected on 138-of-210 throws spanning 2,109 yards, with 19 touchdowns and five picks, and he’s added 407 yards rushing. His top target is Nick McCullough, who has snagged 40 receptions for 844 yards, scoring a team-best 14 touchdowns. Eli Prado, Jeremy Poletti, Lucas Rost, and Lucas Shanafelt also have compiled double-digits in receptions. Nick Courie paces Peters with 128 carries for 517 yards, scoring 13 times. Peters Township, which had a five-game winning streak to start the year and is currently on a four-game surge, holds a scoring margin of 333-104. Coach TJ Plack is at the helm of Peters.

About the Matchup: The victorious team moves on to the Class 5A semifinals against either second-seeded Upper St. Clair or No. 7 Penn Hills. Both squads finished second in their conference during the regular season – the Warriors from the Big East, and the Indians in the Allegheny Six. The previous meeting in 2021 went in favor of the Indians, 28-14. The contest will be held at Peters Township Middle School.

No. 9 Franklin Regional (8-3) at No. 1 Pine-Richland (8-1 – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: A fourth-quarter connection from Chase Lemke to Cole Devola accounted for the winning score, as Franklin Regional edged North Hills 17-16 in the Class 5A first round at Martorelli Stadium one week ago. Lemke’s winning TD pass came via a 12-yard connection on fourth down. Lemke went 9-of-14 for 78 yards passing and a touchdown run for the No. 9 Panthers, while Jude Gentile contributed 17 carries for 74 yards. Moreover, Jaymier Austin recovered a fumble to set up the winning score. Prolific RB Kyle Dupill was limited to just six carries for 20 yards. On the year, Dupill has registered 258 carries for 1,793 yards, scoring 15 total touchdowns. Lemke, meanwhile, has hit on 81-of-178 throws for 1,306 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, and he’s added 181 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Mac Bresnahan and Elijah Bennett are deadlocked with 392 receiving yards a piece. Joey Bayne has booted seven field goals. FR holds a scoring margin of 296-251 for the campaign.

About the Rams: As the top seed in Class 5A, Pine-Richland enjoyed a bye last week. In their final regular-season contest, the Rams throttled Shaler Area 44-3 in Class 5A Northeast Conference action. For the year, QB Aaron “Oobi” Strader has completed 65-of-120 throws for 1,267 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just one interception, and he’s rushed for 313 yards and four TDs. Maclane Miller has amassed 157 carries for 909 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns, while Jay Timmons is the top receiver with 24 receptions for 485 yards and six scores. Kicker Grant Argiro has converted eight field goals. The Rams have outpaced their foes 338-124. Jon LeDonne is the decorated head coach of Pine-Richland.

About the Matchup: The winner advances to the Class 5A semifinals to play either No. 5 Woodland Hills or fifth-seeded Bethel Park. While the Panthers placed third in the Big East, the Rams took the crown from the Northeast. The teams last battled as conference foes in 2007, as Pine-Richland rolled to a 37-0 win.

No. 13 Jeannette (8-3) vs No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2) – 7 p.m. at Norwin High School

About the Jayhawks: Kymon’e Brown propelled Jeannette to a stunning upset of Neshannock 23-7 in the Class 1A first round last Friday. Brown rushed for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the No. 13 Jayhawks, while he added 96 yards through the air. The fourth seed Lancers struck first on a 15-yard run by QB Jino Mozzocio, but Brown responded with an 18-yard score. Jayce Powell staked Jeannette to a lead on an 87-yard kickoff return TD to commence the second half, and he also caught six passes for 88 yards. Brown later added a 60-yard TD scamper, and the Jayhawks defense recorded a safety. On the season, Brown has completed 79-of-146 attempts for 1,540 yards, with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions, and he’s rushed 120 times for 1,113 yards, scoring 14 times. Powell, meanwhile, has caught 45 passes for 791 yards, scoring 14 total TDs. Noah Sunder has added 17 grabs for 447 yards. Jeannette has a pair of four-game winning streaks, as well as a three-game skid. The Jayhawks have a scoring advantage of 328-296 on the year.

About the Centurions: Samir Crosby had a Herculean effort in guiding homestanding Greensburg Central Catholic to a 54-38 victory against Monessen in the Class 1A first round last week. Crosby factored into six TDs for the No. 5 Centurions, as he threw for 164 yards and four scores, rushed for 73 yards and another TD, and added a 70-yard kickoff return score. Landon Honick accumulated six catches for 121 yards and three TDs for GCC. Bobby Smithnosky added a return TD on a blocked punt, while Luke Semelka capped the scoring for the Centurions on a 2-yard run. On the season, Crosby has connected on 73-of-130 throws for 1,335 yards, with 19 TDs and three interceptions, and he’s compiled 136 rushes for 1,000 yards, notching 18 total scores. Honick has registered 35 receptions for 705 yards and 11 TDs, while Jackson McMullen has accumulated six touchdowns. The Centurions, who have seven wins in a row including a forfeit, have a scoring margin of 329-230.

About the Matchup: The team that prevails will advance to the Class 1A semifinals to play either top seed Fort Cherry or No. 9 Cornell. Earlier this season, GCC notched a 44-27 home win against Jeannette in Eastern Conference play.
