Penn-Trafford edges Connellsville in first round while Norwin, Kiski Area and Latrobe fall

WPIAL softball first round and quarterfinal game recaps from Tuesday, May 12th 2026:

Pine-Richland 11 Norwin 9 (6A)

Despite Norwin leading 9-5 through six innings, No. 6 seed Pine-Richland rallied to score six times in the top of the seventh to win 11-9 and stun the third-seeded Knights in a WPIAL 6A quarterfinal game at Plum. Trailing by four runs and down to their final three outs, the Rams hit four doubles and two singles to take the lead. Norwin put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't tie the game. There were 27 total hits in the contest. Abbie Telli, Chloe Bavolar and Lia Holtzman all homered for the Knights (10-9) with Holtzman collecting three hits and three RBIs. Makenna Black added four hits and an RBI. Sydney Bezila finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored an an RBI for Pine-Richland (9-12) which will play Seneca Valley in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 19th.

Penn-Trafford 3 Connellsville 2 (5A)

No. 3 Penn-Trafford avoided an early upset, edging pesky Connellsville 3-2 in a WPIAL 5A first round match up at Norwin. After Addison Smith's home run gave the No. 14 seed Falcons a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the frame on a Torrie DeStefano sacrifice fly and a RBI single from Mac Cox. P-T added an important insurance run in the fifth as Aria Smith's bunt single brought home Gabby Rubbe to make it 3-1. Cali Leichliter hit Connellsville's second long ball to pull within 3-2 in the sixth but couldn't tie the game. Smith finished with two hits for the Warriors (18-3). Allyson Paulone struck out six batters in seven innings to earn the victory for P-T which will play No. 11 North Hills in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Plum. Kalyn Cole notched two hits for the Falcons (12-9).

Baldwin 4 Kiski Area 3 (5A)

No. 12 Kiski Area squandered a late lead as fifth-seeded Baldwin rallied to beat the Cavaliers 4-3 in a WPIAL 5A first round clash at Norwin. With Kiski Area ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Highlanders got a sacrifice fly from Melina DeFelice and a sacrifice bunt from Teaghan Scanlon to tie the game at 3-3. Then, with one out in the seventh, the Cavaliers missed back-to-back fly balls and Jordan Gerendash scored the game-winning run. Alyssa Perona singled, walked and scored a run for Kiski Area (14-6) while Dakota Rainey went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gerendash ended with two hits for Baldwin (17-4) which will play West Allegheny on Tuesday in the quarterfinals at Peters Township.

West Allegheny 11 Greater Latrobe 1 (5A) (6 innings)

No. 13 Greater Latrobe managed just one hit and fell behind 5-1 after two innings, dropping a WPIAL 5A first round game to No. 4 West Allegheny 11-1 at Gateway. Morgan Maiers had the lone hit for the Wildcats (10-9) who had a 1-0 lead through one-and-a-half innings. Madison Maritz doubled twice and knocked in four runs for the Indians who will face off against No. 5 Baldwin in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Tuesday at Peters Township.


WPIAL softball first round game recaps from Monday, May 11th 2026:

Derry Area 8 Beaver Area 4 (4A) - WATCH BROADCAST

Trailing 3-1 entering the fifth inning, Derry Area rallied with seven consecutive runs to defeat Beaver Area 8-4 in the WPIAL Class 4A first round at Gateway High School. The bottom third of the order bolstered the No. 9 Trojans, combining for seven hits, six runs, and three RBIs. Kameryn Dunlap went 3-for-4 for the Trojans (11-4), while Paris Clayton and Marie Razpotnik each reached base safely three times, including two hits apiece. Haylee Myers earned the win in the circle for DA, permitting nine hits and issuing three walks, while striking out seven, and she also delivered a two-run single that tied the game in the fifth. Frankie DePalma produced the go-ahead two-run hit in the sixth, and Razpotnik added to the advantage with a two-RBI double in the seventh. In the defeat for the eighth seed Bobcats (9-8), Cali Coups, Olivia Peabody, and Bella Marino had two hits apiece. Derry Area advances to the Class 4A quarterfinals on Thursday, and will play top-seeded Elizabeth Forward at a site and time to be determined.

Hampton 14 Greensburg Salem 4 (4A) (5 inn.) - WATCH BROADCAST

Greensburg Salem scored first but couldn't hold down Hampton's potent offense as the No. 13 Golden Lions fell to the fourth-seeded Talbots 14-4 in a WPIAL 4A first round tilt at Gateway. The Golden Lions scored twice in their first at-bat of the game but Hampton answered by tallying seven runs in the bottom of the first to take control. Hannah Olbeter recorded three hits, including a double, and two RBIs to pace Greensburg Salem (5-9). Cara Ibinson had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for Hampton (14-5) which advances to play No. 12 Uniontown on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
