Owens hired to lead Yough hoops
Devin Owens, a Yough football assistant, was hired last week to lead the Cougars boys basketball program. Owens replaces William “Boo” Sherbondy, who oversaw the program for one season. Owens, the defensive coordinator to football coach Benny Hoffer, served at the helm of the Ringgold girls basketball program the past two campaigns. His other basketball coaching experience came as an assistant for the Propel Andrew Street boys. A grad of Carrick, Owens played football, basketball, and volleyball with the Raiders, and continued on the gridiron at Saint Vincent College. Last season, the Cougars went 1-21, losing all 12 of their contests in Class 4A Section 3 action.
Palm steps down from Cougars baseball
After three seasons at the helm of Yough baseball, head coach Dan Palm has stepped down. During his tenure, Palm compiled a mark of 25-35, including 2-15 overall this past spring. In his first season as the head coach in 2023, Palm helped guide Yough to a section crown. Prior to becoming the head coach, Palm served as an assistant at Yough for seven years. His previous stints included leading Belle Vernon Area from 2006 to 2013.
Griffins tabbed fifth in PSAC football poll
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Coaches Poll was released last week, and Seton Hill University was placed fifth in the West Division. The Griffins were slotted behind Slippery Rock University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, California University of Pennsylvania, and Gannon University. Last season, the Griffins went 3-8, including 1-5 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill will be under the guidance of new head coach Kevin May, who replaced Dan Day. Seton Hill commences its 2025 schedule with a home tilt against Fairmont State University of Aug. 28.
SVC football ranked ninth in PAC
Saint Vincent College hosted the annual Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Football Media Day last Wednesday, and the host Bearcats were tabbed ninth in the preseason poll. Washington & Jefferson College topped the poll, while Carnegie Mellon University and Westminster College also garnered first-place votes. Last year, SVC went 1-9 in the PAC. The Bearcats have a new coach, as Casey Goff was hired in January to lead the program. Saint Vincent opens its season with a home tilt against Hilbert College on Sept. 6.
